Raymar was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing three years of basketball and spending one year with the varsity track team.

He was a basketball team captain for two seasons and was twice named Team MVP.  In 2001, he was an All-District Honorable Mention selection.  In 2002, his junior year, he was named to the Second Team Jefferson District and was an Honorable Mention All-Central Virginia choice.  

Last season, he was named District Player of the Year and was named to the First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and First Team All-Central Virginia.  He was a Second Team All-State selection and played in the VHSL/VHSCA All-Star Game.  

He is the son of Raymond and Brenda Byrd.
