    Two Saint Vincent College students have started a new club that their grandmothers might like to join.

    Creatively named Threads for Heads, the new student knitting club founded by Mary Bukowski and Muniza Uddin is attracting a growing number of students – both men and women – who enjoy making colorful hats which are donated to cancer patients in the Westmoreland County region who are suffering from hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment.

    A book by Fr. Rene Kollar, O.S.B., professor of history and dean of the Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts, A Foreign and Wicked Institution? The Campaign Against Convents in Victorian England, which was published in the United States in spring 2011, was recently published in England by James Clarke and Co. Ltd. of Cambridge.

    One hundred and twenty-eight students – 41 undergraduates and 87 graduate students – who completed requirements in August or December will receive their degrees at the seventh annual December commencement ceremony of Saint Vincent College at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17 in the gymnasium of the Robert S. Carey Student Center. Principal speaker will be Carlos M. Cardoso, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Kennametal Inc., who will also be honored with the conferral of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

    Br. Nathan M. Cochran, O.S.B., instructor in fine arts, director of The Saint Vincent Gallery and artistic director of the Saint Vincent College Concert Series, was named the first winner of Saint Vincent College’s new Projektenmacher Award in recognition of his creative initiative that, in the spirit of Saint Vincent Founder Boniface Wimmer, has made a valuable difference to the campus community through creativity, imagination and vision. The award was presented by Saint Vincent College President Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B. during the Founders’ Day Honors Convocation on November 17 in the Saint Vincent Basilica.

    Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation has awarded a grant of $50,000 to Saint Vincent College to support the acquisition of hardware and software for two new computing labs for the Computing and Information Science (CIS) Department in the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computing, according to an announcement by Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., president.

    Saint Vincent College Department of Criminology, Law, and Society will host a Mock Trial Closing Arguments Competition for students from eight Westmoreland County high schools from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 7 at the Fred M. Rogers Center. They will present closing arguments to a panel of judges for a fictitious legal case that will be decided by a volunteer jury.
