    One hundred and twenty-eight students – 41 undergraduates and 87 graduate students – who completed requirements in August or December will receive their degrees at the seventh annual December commencement ceremony of Saint Vincent College at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17 in the gymnasium of the Robert S. Carey Student Center. Principal speaker will be Carlos M. Cardoso, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Kennametal Inc., who will also be honored with the conferral of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Leiner, associate professor of philosophy and liberal arts in the department of philosophy of the Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts, to aid them in the completion of this project.

    Saint Vincent College Department of Criminology, Law, and Society will host a Mock Trial Closing Arguments Competition for students from eight Westmoreland County high schools from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 7 at the Fred M. Rogers Center. They will present closing arguments to a panel of judges for a fictitious legal case that will be decided by a volunteer jury.

    Br. Nathan M. Cochran, O.S.B., instructor in fine arts, director of The Saint Vincent Gallery and artistic director of the Saint Vincent College Concert Series, was named the first winner of Saint Vincent College’s new Projektenmacher Award in recognition of his creative initiative that, in the spirit of Saint Vincent Founder Boniface Wimmer, has made a valuable difference to the campus community through creativity, imagination and vision. The award was presented by Saint Vincent College President Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B. during the Founders’ Day Honors Convocation on November 17 in the Saint Vincent Basilica.

    An avid skier who calls herself “outdoorsy,” Saint Vincent College graduate Stephanie Hewitson recently completed a challenging climb to the top of Africa’s snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, to raise nearly $100,000 for the American Foundation for Children with AIDS.

    Kelsey Harris, second from left, a prefect in St. Benedict Hall, and the freshman residents recently organized a program called Saint Vincent College Thanks Veterans in which they made large thank you cards for veterans in area nursing homes and asked other students to sign them before being delivered on Veterans’ Day to the Loyalhanna Care Center, Emeritus at Latrobe, Latrobe Care Center and Greensburg Care Center.
