The first teachers to ever “flip their classrooms” were Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams. Jonathan Bergmann has taught high school science for 25 years. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence for Math and Science Teaching in 2002 and was named semi-finalist for the Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2010. Aaron Sams has been an educator since 2000. He was awarded the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Aaron recently served as co-chair of the Colorado State Science Standards Revision Committee. He frequently speaks and conducts workshops on educational uses of screen casts and the flipped classroom concept.
Most recently…Jonathan and Aaron have been writing articles and books, as well as presenting lectures to establish what their visions of teaching should be for students. They are, along with teachers who are practicing this model, making a point of explaining what this type of teaching is and what it is not.
According to them, the traditional definition of a flipped class occurs when video instruction takes the place of direct instruction. The belief is that the teacher is no longer the “sage on the stage”. Rather…the teacher becomes the “guide on the side” (knewton.com). Bergmann and Sams believe that by providing the instruction via video presentations more individual time in the classroom can be afforded to the students.
As is the case with any new trend in education, the flipped classroom produces positive and negative responses from other educators. Bloggers who are following and/or practicing this model are stating that the idea of providing more time in classrooms for student practice in front of the teacher leads to better discussions, more efficient learning, and greater opportunities for students to move at their own individual paces. However concerns include the fact that not all students have computers and needed software as well as the worry that students will become “immune” to watching videos and tune out.
