Academic Services

In addition to classroom accommodations, the following services are free to students with disabilities.

Academic Counseling –

Academic counseling is available to provide guidance and support to students in the following areas:

  • Study skills
  • Time management
  • Course planning
  • Personal and career development
  • Self-advocacy skills
  • Referrals for learning disability testing

The academic counselor also serves as an advocate or mediator for students to ensure access to appropriate accommodations and services.

Peer Tutoring-

Peer tutoring is provided for all S.V.C. students through each of the individual academic departments.  Information about peer tutors and tutoring times can be obtained through the academic affairs departments or the Tutorial Bulletin, which can be accessed via the search option on the College website,

Kurzweil 3000-

This is a highly sophisticated screen reading software program that replicates human speech to read aloud scanned written material, web based information, or other text files.  Kurzweil can be used to:

  • Access written course materials.
  • Provide auditory feedback during the writing process, including exams.
  • Create outlines, vocabulary lists, sticky notes, voice notes, and a variety of other study tools from text files.

Kurzweil 3000 is available on the college computer network and can be accessed in several campus computer labs, including A23, P424, the S.V.C. library, St. Benedict Hall, Rooney Hall and Gerard Hall.  Students with documented disabilities can request access through their personal computer.  Kurzweil 3000 is also available on the academic accommodations laptops and can be used by eligible students for exams and other classroom activities.

The purchases of Kurzweil 3000, the academic accommodations laptops, head-phones and scanners for use with the Kurzweil 3000 software was made possible in part by a grant from the Robertshaw Charitable Foundations of Greensburg, PA.
