  • 94.5% of our Education students secure teaching jobs within a year of graduation, based on our own alumni surveys.

Learning Outcomes for Teacher Education

Each year, the education department strives to meet the following outcomes for all teacher education candidates regardless of program. 

Education undergraduate, graduate and student teacher candidates will:

  • obtain passing scores on the Praxis II exams for each teaching area or supervisory area in which they have been prepared at Saint Vincent College.
  • demonstrate thorough knowledge of content and adequate pedagogical skills in planning and preparation for teaching through student teaching evaluations and observations based on the Pennsylvania Statewide Evaluation Form for Student Professional Knowledge and Practice (PDE 430): Category I. Planning and Preparation.
  • establish and maintain a purposeful and equitable classroom environment for learning, in which pupils feel safe, valued, and respected, by instituting routines and setting clear expectations for pupil behavior as demonstrated by student teaching evaluations and observations based on the Pennsylvania Statewide Evaluation Form for Student Professional Knowledge and Practice (PDE 430): Category II. Classroom Environment.  
  • through knowledge of content, pedagogy and skill in delivering instruction, effectively engage students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies as measured by student teaching evaluations and observations based on the Pennsylvania Statewide Evaluation Form for Student Professional Knowledge and Practice (PDE 430): Category III. Instructional Delivery.
  • demonstrate the desired qualities that characterize a professional person in aspects that occur in and beyond the classroom as recorded in student teaching evaluations and observations based on the Pennsylvania Statewide Evaluation Form for Student Professional Knowledge and Practice (PDE 430): Category IV. Professionalism.
  • Candidates for Secondary teacher certification can pursue a minor in Education and a B.A. or B.S. degree in another subject.
  • Candidates interested in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education enroll in the B.S. In Elementary Instruction (selecting Early Childhood or Middle Grade)
  • Secondary teaching certification is available in Biology, Chemistry, Business, Computer and Information Technology, English, Mathematics, Physics, Social Science and Social Studies. K-12 Certifications are available in Art, Environmental Education, Spanish, French, Library Science (Graduate) and Special Education (Graduate).
  • School Administration certification is also available at the Graduate level: K-12 School Principal and K-12 Curriculum Supervision
  • Non-teaching education minor for students not pursuing teacher certification.
  • An Continuing Education certification program for individuals considering teaching as a second career also available.
  • Education Department curriculum prepares you academically to teach, provides the psychological foundation necessary to understand and influence developing young minds, and offers the practical experience needed for confidence on the job.
  • Formal teacher certification components prepare you for state teacher certification testing. Admission to the program is available to juniors who meet the pre-requisites, including a passing score on the Pre-Professional Skills Tests of the PRAXIS exams.
  • Unique Benedictine influence takes learning to a higher level (Visit and see for yourself!).

  • Enables you to focus on a specialty within Education.
  • Provides numerous practical field experiences in which you observe teachers, tutor students and take advantage of classroom demonstrations and teaching lessons.
  • Jump-starts your teaching career through a 15-week student teaching assignment.
  • Prepares you to pass Pennsylvania's rigorous teacher certification test.

  • Prepares you for immediate employment. Nearly 95% of Saint Vincent's Education students find a job within a year of graduation. (In addition, jobs for high school teachers are expected to grow faster than the average occupation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.)
  • Provides a well-rounded liberal arts education, the hallmark of teachers who are not only academically proficient, but also caring and creative inspirational role models.
  • Gets you ready for a full life, personally and professionally, by nurturing your spirit as well as your intellect.
