Teacher Certification Areas
The Education Department provides all requirements as stated
by the
Pennsylvania Department of Education for certification in specific
specialty (content) areas. Undergraduate students seeking a secondary
or a K-12 teaching certificate declare a minor in Education and a major in
a specific content field (English, mathematics, art, etc.).
Undergraduate students seeking an elementary and/or early childhood
teaching certificate will declare a Major in Elementary Instruction.
These students are asked to select a track to follow: Elementary, Early
Childhood Educaton, or a Combined Option: Elementary and Early
Childhood. The Elementary Instruction major provides the most
streamlined and expedient path by which to achieve elementary and/or
early childhood certification along with meeting new State requirements
in Special Education and ESL.
Post baccalaureate students wishing to earn secondary or K-12 certification should first meet with their Education Advisior to transfer credits and then complete the coursework for their specialty area.
Saint Vincent College has constructed its teacher certification program based on the general and specialty area guidelines of the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). See the PDE wed site for all information and clarification. www.pde.pa.state.us The Education Department also conforms to the PDE 430 Assessment and the INTASC Principles.
