Collaboration & Special Programs

Saint Vincent College engages in many collaborations and special programs not only to offer our students opportunities to work with children or young adults, but also to allow outside education professionals to work directly with students.  Below is a list of outreach programs that are closely tied to the Saint Vincent College Education Department.

Saint Vincent College Step-Up Enrichment Academy

The SVC Step-Up Enrichment Academy is a program based on campus that offers enrichment classes for home-schooled students or other children able to attend on Friday afternoons.  Pre-service education students, as a part of their ED 206 Strategies and Techniques of Instruction Laboratory requirements, teach the campus-based classes.  All education students are required to develop course syllabi, unit and lesson plans, and activities for the K-12 students.  Elementary and secondary classes are held from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.  Over 80 community students participate in this academy and enjoy the enrichment class offered by our students.

The Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media at Saint Vincent College

The Fred M. Rogers Center was established at Saint Vincent College in September 2003 to serve as a national and international resource for addressing emerging issues affecting children and families. Staying true to the vision of Fred Rogers, and emulating the guiding principles of his life's work, the Center's mission is to advance the state of early learning and children's media by acting as a catalyst for communication, collaboration, and creative change across both fields.

ScienceWISE

ScienceWISE, which operates out of Saint Vincent College, partners with 11 school districts, mostly in Westmoreland County, in an effort to enhance the way science is taught and learned at the elementary school and middle school levels. Through ScienceWISE, school districts can get core curriculum of hands-on science instruction selecting from 40 widely varied titles for grades K-8. The program is currently serving nearly 20,000 students.

Pathways to Success

The Pathways to Success program is an educational enrichment program for the middle school students from designated middle schools in Pittsburgh. Selected students demonstrate the potential for high academic achievement and are chosen because of their willingness to achieve.

Saint Vincent College students serve as mentors and counselors for the program. The college students interact with the students throughout the school year to develop continuity and increase the sense of community.
