Admissions to health profession schools is very competitive. Consequently, students are guided during their four years at St. Vincent College by faculty on the Preprofessional Health Committee. The Committee's primary responsibility is to serve students as they prepare for entrance to health profession schools. More specifically, the Committee:
monitors the academic progress and personal growth of each student;
provides advising about coursework;
counsels students about extracurricular activities necessary for admission to health profession schools such as community service, shadowing experience, research internships and leadership roles;
sponsors guest speakers such as medical alumni, admissions officers and research scientists;
assists students with preparation of their application materials, and advises them about personal essays and interviews;
evaluates the candidacy of each student and formulates letters of recommendation;
serves as an interface between applicants and admissions offices.
In fact, students may choose any undergraduate major, but a solid foundation in biology and chemistry, and a fundamental knowledge of mathematics and physics are necessary. Consequently, pre-health students complete the following courses:
| Freshman year: | Credits |
| | BL 150-153 General Biology | 8 |
| | CH 101-104 General Chemistry | 8 |
| Sophomore year: | |
| | MA 109-110 Calculus or 111-112 | 8 |
| | CH 221-224 Organic Chemistry | 8 |
| Junior year: | |
| | PH 111-114 General Physics | 8 |
Additionally, most students complete BL 208 Cell Biology or BL 224 Mammalian Physiology.
