Becoming More of an English Major

I will have to just be frank about it, before this year I haven't been much of an English major. I read what I had to (most of the time anyways), wrote what I had to and basically just floated along. I always loved writing and reading, but who has time to LOVE anything when college is in session? You have to just get by.

I've discovered, even though it took me almost 3 years to do so, that is NO way to live. And so, I've started to LIVE.

I've been reading for enjoyment. Really. I've really into Truman Capote lately. He wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's, the book they made the movie off of. He also wrote In Cold Blood, a book that a true-to-life murder from the perspective of the murders, whom Capote befriended. I'm really looking forward to reading it. Capote never took notes, so it's believed he fictionalized some of the book simply because he could not remember what the men said or maybe he just preferred his imagination to the truth.

I've also been writing A LOT. It's been so refreshing. I used to only write to an assignment, but my creative writing muscle is ever-flexing. I'm taking a fiction course this semester and it really has inspired me. I've been writing on my own and then trying to make my writing fit the assignment. Currently, I'm working on a story about my father and myself. It's odd because it kind of fits into the genre Capote popularized, the nonfiction/fiction reportage. 8)

Lastly, I've been working on developing a love of coffee. My mother always tells me that I can't be a true writer if I don't drink coffee. I have always laughed her off, but really what kind of cultured writer doesn't drink coffee? Haha. I'm not so sure about what the outcome will be, but I have been drinking a lot of coffee lately. But the trouble is that I can only stomach really really flavored coffee. And that, my friends, is some hella expensive coffee. Haha. But I'm enjoying it so much. SVC has this really wonderful nook on campus, the Gristmill coffee house. Of late, it's been my favorite hangout. Jillian and I, trendsetters that we are, have taken to calling it, The Milly. We are too cool for school.
