Please allow me to make the statement that I, Alicia F. Rae, have a strong distaste for the genre of science fiction. With that in mind, you can probably understand how I felt when fellow blogger, Emerson, handed me a science fiction movie, Serenity and told me that I had to see it. As you may recall, I love movies. It's really almost a problem for me how much I love movies. But I wasn't too keen on watching this movie and probably would not have had I not been sooooo incredibly bored over spring break. (Sorry, Em!) However, I did watch it and I rather enjoyed it. The basic story is that there is this girl, River. She has been trained to be a weapon, essentially. She can kick some serious butt. Well, this spacecraft captain, Mal and his crew take her and her brother, Doc in whenever her brother breaks her out of this science-type lab and away from the bad people or "The Alliance." The Alliance sends out some assassin to find River and kill her because she is also a physic and knows a pretty bad secret that could weaken the Alliance's stronghold over all the planets. The plot is great and the effects are not half-bad. But the dialogue really left something to be desired. I think that's what is so off-putting to be about the whole genre. I constantly find myself rolling my eyes at the dialogue. It's just so unreal and often played up, but I guess that is to be expected when you are dealing the sci-fi genre. It is my understanding that SVC is offering a sci-fi writing class here this semester. I'm happy that people are drawn to that sort of thing and that it's highly marketable, but it's just not for me. But in any case, I enjoyed the movie despite a bit of wincing at a few lines. ("I aim to misbehave." Puke) So, thanks Em.
