The MLK Challenge

Hello dear readers,

I had quite the weekend. The service learning department at my school sponsored what is known as an MLK Challenge. A bunch of students from my school came together to complete different community service challenges throughout our local community.

My group was in charge of planning a party for 30 children of mothers in low-income situations and housing. That was the fun part. The challenge part was that we had 1/2 hour and $40 to complete this task on. It was like Mission Impossible with a twist. I was worried for a little bit that we would not be able to pull it off, but we did! I think the kids really enjoyed themselves and I know that I did.

I dragged fellow blogger and roommate, Kylie McGinnis into this challenge. She and Nicky both were on a team that went to Pittsburgh and worked at Holy Family, a group-home for older foster children. They were in charge of organizing the clothing shop that helps fund the Holy Family program. Kylie really had fun and Nick too. She said she was glad that I forced her into it. 8)

Some of the other challenged including going to homes of the elderly and changing light bulbs and just being a companion, planning a party in a nursing home, doing hair and makeup at Adelphoi Village, a home for troubled girls and building a play area for children at Seton Hill Childcare in Greensburg. That group made this awesome igloo out of cardboard boxes, tape, paint and felt.

I really enjoyed myself and I am so glad not only that I did it, but also that I forced all my friends to do it too. No one had anything negative to say, which says a lot. People can always find something to complain about. Always.

Anyways, I'm off. Until next time...
