Many people have commented on the number of activities that St. Vincent has despite the relatively small undergraduate population. There are an incredible number of events on and off campus for students to attend, both free and with admission. A couple Thursdays back, Dr. Krom, Dr. Watson, a few other students, and myself met at the Tin Lizzy, a bar a couple miles from school. After ordering drinks, we all pulled out a copy of "Origins of Philosophy" and began. My guess is that we made a highly amusing picture. Everyone else in the bar was drinking beer from cans and smoking cigarettes and enthralled by the Penguins game. Our table was occupied by men in suit jackets, absorbed in philosophic text, sipping their lagers and watching the smoke float up from their pipes. (I myself felt slightly out of place with merely a simple glass of water and the library copy of the book.) Probably not the tradition way that "Thirsty Thursday" is celebrated on most college campuses, but we had an excellent time. In other blogs, I've talked somewhat about my musical involvement. I had decided not to participate in the Cabaret this year, but somehow found myself in front of the judges the night of auditions. I think what persuaded me was the knowledge that there would only be rehearsal two to three nights a week rather than five. Cabaret is a musical review put on each spring. This year, we are doing songs from Hairspray, Children of Eden, Spamalot, and other Broadway shows. The very first week of school last year I attended a meeting of the Mythopoeic Society, a group of students dedicated to discussing some classic literature. I fell away from the group though for a year and a half simply because I had other responsibilities on Wednesday nights. But thankfully, I've been back with them the last two weeks and hopefully will be able to continue. Oh, I just remembered that I have music rehearsal tonight. Shoot, twice! I was reclining in this swivel chair in the Latimer Family Library, thinking about what else to write about and looking forward to a very relaxing evening after a busy week when I remembered that the contemporary music ensemble has rehearsal at 4:45. And then I remembered that I have Cabaret from nine to midnight. Such is life, I suppose. I should really get a planner sometime soon though. Unfortunately, my duties as philosophy tutor are pulling me away right now. A freshman in Dr. Leiner's First Philosophy class just walked up and handed me an essay on Plato's Republic that's due in 41 minutes.
