Spreading Yourself Thin

I've haven't actually written a blog in a while, which is a darn shame, and my last one was the definition of hurried. But now I've managed to secure a good twenty minutes of down time, and thus I proceed to write muchly of my coming and goings.

Are you interested? Of course you are. I am both awesome and humble, and so people are naturally drawn to me. (That, or the almost radioactive paleness that my skin manages to roll with. Seriously, I don't need a flashlight to see things--I have short sleeves, and the light reflecting from my arms works just fine.)

Anyway, I've managed to do what I did back in high school, which is throw myself into a (to steal from Alicia) crapton of work and extracurricular activities. Why? Well, they're just so much fun, and that whole idea of only being alive once (and therefore enjoying yourself) appeals to me.

On one hand I'm rocking out in only one English course, the Romantic period, which I have to say I'm really enjoying. Eventually we're going to reach the Austen period, and I am going to disgrace myself with fangirl tendencies to know everything about her works...because I am a Jane Austen stalker, really. Huzzah for that.

On the other, I'm really enjoying my education classes--Ed. Psych and Foundations of Education. Ed. Psych is slightly like really interesting common sense, but occasionally throws "you think you know but you have no idea!" curveballs, which I enjoy. Foundations has been my roughest class, but I think that's largely because a) Dr. Bleyer is tough, and b) I have it all on Thursday night, which means there is oodles of information to understand in a very short time period. With each class it gets better, which is good--'tis not good to fail education classes as a future educator.

In terms of non-graded work, I finally joined the Shakespeare Club. I knew I missed acting, but it really hit home at the end of last semester. I went to see Hamlet and Joseph, and seeing my friends own the stage (and then post photos all over Facebook, which is a site that just begs for people to creep on one another) was akin to beating myself with a regret mallet.

So, now that cross-country has ended and my running is all on me time (I am not on the girls track club because of scheduling and my irrational hatred of track season), I joined up with followers of the bard. We're doing scenes from Shakespeare, so a fine mix of drama and comedy. I'm directing two scenes, acting in those two scenes, and heckling in another. The one directed scene is currently being written (by me), and features Pat Shiner with a feathered hat. That alone is reason to come see the show! Honesty, it's coming along really well, and I am quite pleased. It is in April. Buy tickets and be cultured!

Human Rights Organization, another group I'm working with, also has been super busy raising money to support victims of domestic violence. We sold heart and star shaped crayons (see Kylie's blog for tales as to why they double as incendiary devices), as well as homemade fortune cookies and chocolate covered Oreos. We had wanted to make 1000 dollars, but after two weeks practically living at the cafeteria and begging for money we didn't quite make it. Still, I feel like we raised a lot of awareness, which is great. Did you know a woman dies every 21 days as a result of domestic abuse? Sad but true. See Alicia's blog for how the government is helping, and when I type helping,  I mean not.

I also have been working to fundraise for Rome, babysitting in Campus Ministry around the day of commercialized love, otherwise known as Valentines Day (though I did get flowers which were lovely, so I can't rant overmuch). The kids were all great, and I'm not going to lie, I loved having an excuse to watch Disney movies on a big screen while coloring. What I found really entertaining was that on Friday, while playing Hercules for what had to be the cutest kids in existence, some fellow SVC students came in and asked if they could watch it with us. Disney--classics for any age.

Submissions for the literary magazine, Generation, also went in this week. So, crazed authors were everywhere. There was panic in the streets, talk of burning the library, pen prices skyrocketing...or not. I had a few short short story ideas I was playing with, the longest coming in at about three pages, so I managed to finish them up and send them in before I edited them to death. If I get in, great, but if not I'm glad I'm back in the creative writing vein again. I've missed cranking out tales of randomness just for myself.

And there you have it, blog readers! 'Tis the life of me, and I have to say, I'm quite fond of it. But now I'm off to snag Kristina--a friend of mine is up here, checking out the school to see if she's interested in coming here next year.

If you're reading this as a prospective student, I highly encourage an overnight stay. They're fun, and you get the whole college experience. Also, you can stay with me (if you're of the female persuasion), and who wouldn't want to do that?

(I kid, people. Goodness, my head's not THAT large. Yet.)
