The one good thing about working all the time during the summer is the fact that since I am generally too tired to leave my house in the evenings, I read. I read a lot. I have read some pretty great books so far this summer, the highlights including the His Dark Materials Trilogy, which is the series that starts with The Golden Compass. The books are fantastic. They take you into a great new world, and make you think along the way.
I also finished Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins, another great book that makes you think. My brother once described the book to me as “a fairy tale for adults,” and I agree. The book is incredibly hard to describe in a couple of sentences, but it involves a couple that learned the secret to immortality, the god Pan who is fading away, the greatest perfume in the world, and lots and lots of beets. I got some other books by this author from the library and I can’t wait to crack them open.
The last book that I have recently read that I would like to note is Into The Wild. I am sure that many people have seen or heard of the movie by now, and I admit, I saw the movie first, but whichever medium you choose, I recommend them both. They just seem so important to me because the person that they are based on actually had convictions and a plan. He knew what he wanted, and he did it. He did what he wanted, and not what was expected of him, and he left a great impression on everyone that he met along the way. If my life could be half as cool as his, I would be able to die happy. But, I suppose if I am to follow in the footsteps of Alexander Supertramp, and start to really live my life, I must finish college first, and therefore must continue to work so I can pay for it a little longer.
