Factories and the Website

So, this week was a fun one. I woke up at 6 AM every day and stood on my feet in a factory for 10 hours from Monday to today. Woot. (And that is a woot with the letter “o” and not zeroes.) But I know that I shall have a good paycheck next week and I will be saving money so that I can continue to attend SVC, and get a degree so that I will not have to work in a factory for my entire life. All of the women that I work with agree on one thing. They all tell me to get my degree so that I can get out of the factory.

On another subject altogether, today I went to the SVC website so that I could look at all of my grades. (Yaaay! I passed!) When I was at the website, I thought to myself that I probably would not set up the website in the manner that it is set up. The two aspects of it that bugged me the most were the “Friendships that Last” part as well as the area that has the “events.” In the friendships that last area, the first in the list is the “Pittsburgh Steelers.” Yes, they are a wonderful football team, blah, blah, blah; but really what do they have to do with Saint Vincent College? Is Troy Polamalu going to be teaching my history class? I think not. Or is the NFL more important that academics at SVC, and I was just not informed?

If you go down “Friendships that Last” list a little farther, however, there is a choice for the “Benedictine Community.” I really can’t speak for everyone else on campus, but I am pretty sure the Benedictine Community has a much greater impact on my day-to-day existence at SVC. The monks teach classes, are always on campus, and coming into the library. “Benedictine Values” are an essential part of campus that can not be ignored no matter if you try or not. Why are the Steelers highlighted when Benedictine life and values are actually first and foremost on campus?

The other part that bothers me is the events section. There are three events highlighted. One is this year’s commencement, and another is last year’s. Why is last year’s commencement still highlighted even though it occurred a year ago? Because President Bush was there, to the protest of many of the students I might add. How long will this event, which is far from current, attempt to attract new students to SVC? If I was still trying to decide where to go to college, I would look at the SVC front page, and think to myself. “Holy cow! People graduated from this college! They did it last year too! Imagine that!” and move on.

On behalf of Saint Vincent, I would like to invite you to look closer than our website, to actually come and visit, and have a look around, because the school is so much more than the Steelers and President Bush. (Also, yes, I do realize that if anyone is reading this, they found it on the SVC website.)
