<title>McKenna School professor named Academic Fellow</title>

<description>&#x3C;P&#x3E;&#x3C;B&#x3E;Dr. &#x3C;/B&#x3E;&#x3C;B&#x3E;Brad Watson &#x3C;/B&#x3E;of the &#x3C;?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = &#x22;urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;McKenna&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;School&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E; faculty has been named an Academic Fellow of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. He will travel to &#x3C;st1:country-region w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Israel&#x3C;/st1:country-region&#x3E; in May and June for seminars at the &#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Jaffee&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Center&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E; for Strategic Studies at &#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Tel&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Aviv&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;University&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E; and visits to various front line areas such as &#x3C;st1:City w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Gaza&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:City&#x3E; and the Lebanese border.&#x3C;/P&#x3E;</description>

Mark Wenzinger, O.S.B.,&#x3C;/B&#x3E;has been invited to participate in a conference sponsored by the journal, &#x3C;I&#x3E;Communio&#x3C;/I&#x3E;, April 14-17 near &#x3C;?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = &#x22;urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:City w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Washington&#x3C;/st1:City&#x3E;, &#x3C;st1:State w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;DC&#x3C;/st1:State&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;.&#x26;nbsp; The conference is entitled &#x22;Love Alone is Credible:&#x26;nbsp; Hans Urs von Balthasar as Interpeter of the Catholic Tradition.&#x22;&#x26;nbsp; The conference is being held to mark the 100th anniversary of Fr. von Balthasar&#x27;s birth and the completion of the translation into English of the final volume of Fr. von Balthasar&#x27;s multivolume philosophical/theological trilogy.&#x26;nbsp; Participants and speakers for this conference include a large number of internationally known philosophers and theologians from Europe, &#x3C;st1:country-region w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Canada&#x3C;/st1:country-region&#x3E; and the &#x3C;st1:country-region w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;U.S.&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:country-region&#x3E;&#x3C;/P&#x3E;</description>

Dr. Harty and her colleague, Dr. Kathryn Bell from &#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;West Virginia&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;University&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;, presented results of a study they were involved with that improved the reading abilities of students in grades K-2.&#x3C;/P&#x3E;</description>

<title>Philosophy professor presents at conference on value inquiry</title>

<description>&#x3C;P&#x3E;&#x3C;B&#x3E;Dr. Gene Torisky&#x3C;/B&#x3E;, assistant professor of philosophy, presented a paper at the 32nd Conference on Value Inquiry, held at &#x3C;?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = &#x22;urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:PlaceName w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Louisiana&#x3C;/st1:PlaceName&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;State&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E; &#x3C;st1:PlaceType w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;University&#x3C;/st1:PlaceType&#x3E; in &#x3C;st1:City w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Baton Rouge&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:City&#x3E; from April 8 to 10.&#x26;nbsp; Titled &#x201C; The Two Faces of Moral Modesty,&#x201D; the paper considers and rejects two arguments that no action is ethically supererogatory--that is, can have positive moral value yet not be required by duty--since those considered ethical saints or heroes nonetheless claim not to have done anything special.&#x26;nbsp; The conference attracted 120 participating philosophers from the &#x3C;st1:country-region w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;United States&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E;&#x3C;/st1:country-region&#x3E; and eight other countries.&#x3C;/P&#x3E;</description>

<title>Dr. Grumbine presents poster at meeting of American Physical Society</title>

Grumbine, Jr.&#x3C;/B&#x3E;presented a poster over break at the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Los Angeles, California, on some of his research entitled &#x201C;Absorption on Carbon Nanotubes: A Transfer Matrix Method.&#x201D; He also gave a talk on some of the &#x201C;side-effects&#x201D; of this research at the spring 2005 meeting of the &#x3C;?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = &#x22;urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;st1:place w:st=&#x22;on&#x22;&#x3E;Western Pennsylvania&#x3C;/st1:place&#x3E; section of the American Association of Physics Teachers entitled &#x201C; Super-Computing for the Rest of Us.&#x201D;&#x3C;/P&#x3E;</description>
