Spring 2004 Game Recaps

5/14: Bearcats end stellar season in Ohio

The Saint Vincent College baseball team ended their season with a loss in the championship game of the NAIA Region IX tournament. The Bearcats fell short in their quest to reach the NAIA World Series, dropping a 16-5 contest to Mount Vernon Nazarene University, ending the most successful season ever for the team.

SVC, playing as the visitors, opened the game in fine fashion, as senior center fielder Shaun Wenz took a two-strike pitch from MVNU starter Jason Irish over the 380-foot sign in left-center field.

Mount Vernon tied the game in the bottom of the first against Bearcat starter Ben Stoltzfus.

In the top of the second, Bearcat LF Russell Daniels gave the Bearcats another lead with another solo HR to left-center, but the Cougars manufactured a tying run in the bottom of the inning.

SVC answered again in the top of the third, when Wenz singled, advanced on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Wenz had been moved to third on a groundout by shortstop Danny Consuegra, who played despite injuring his thumb on Thursday.

The 3-2 Saint Vincent lead was short-lived, as Mount Vernonís Steve Edwards tagged Stoltzfus for a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to put the #16-ranked Cougars ahead to stay. A host of Bearcat relievers couldnít stop Mount Vernon, as they scored three runs in the fourth and five more runs the next inning.

Saint Vincentís Joe Pichler homered in the top of the sixth to cut the margin to 13-4, but the damage had been done. The Bearcats scored their final run in the top of the seventh, when Josh Dziombaís single scored Cy Haponski, who was pinch running for DH Josh Morrow, whose single started the inning.

Mount Vernon added runs late to make it a 16-5 final. Irish went the distance for the victory, giving up 10 hits, walking none and striking out six Bearcats. Stoltzfus (3-1) took the loss.

"You played great all year, and you have nothing to hang your heads about," Coach Mick Janosko told his Bearcats after the game. "You battled all year and never gave up. Iím proud of you and you should be proud of yourselves."

Saint Vincent finishes with a 26-20 overall record, runners-up in NAIA Region IX and Champions of the American Mideast Conference North Division. The team was the first in at least a decade to make the post-season within the conference, and the first-ever in school history to reach the NAIA Regionals.

More details on the Bearcats season will be posted soon along with news of the All-Conference team.

5/13: Bearcats split, move to championship

The Bearcats lost their first game of the day to Mount Vernon Nazarene University, but avoided elimination with a come-from-behind victory over the University of Rio Grande in the second game of the day.

In game two, Jeremiah Scott pitched 7+ innings to earn the victory, while Ryan Russell came on in relief for the save. Joe Pichler provided the big hit, a third inning grand slam that capped a six run outburst and erased a 3-0 deficit.

"It was a huge hit," Bearcat Coach Mick Janosko said. "Joeís been on fire in the post-season, and he lifted us up again today. Heís been doing that all year."

Russ Daniels was 4-for-5 with a triple, a run batted in and three runs scored. Aaron Wilson was 3-4 with 2 RBI. Danny Consuegra was 2-3 with a sacrifice fly for SVC before leaving in the fifth inning with an injured hand. Josh Dziomba was 2-4.

Russell worked out of a jam in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. Starter Scott improved his record to 6-3.

"Jeremiah threw a phenomenal ball game," said Janosko. "He did a great job of changing speeds and keeping Rio off balance. Ryan also did a phenomenal job. He threw strikes and let our guys play defense."

The dayís first game was a struggle, to say the least, as Saint Vincent was on the short end of a 19-1 score. The Bearcats fell behind early on a few marginal plays. On three occasions, Mount Vernon Nazarene was simply trying to advance a runner with a bunt, but thick, watered grass posed problems for Bearcat infielders, giving infield singles to MVNU to keep rallies alive.

Mount Vernon rocked a host of Bearcat pitchers for 21 hits ñ the first 20 of which were all singles. The lone Bearcat run was scored in the bottom of the ninth, when Russ Daniels homered off MVNU ace Adam Rowe, who improved his record to 9-1 on the season. Kip Watkins started and took the loss for Saint Vincent.

"Adam Rowe is an all-conference pitcher," Janosko said. "He shut us down, and I have to give credit to him."

Mount Vernon scored twice in the second inning, added four in the fhird, then erupted for eight runs in the top of the fourth. After five innings, the score was 16-0. The Cougars, ranked #16 in the nation, added three runs in the ninth.

The Bearcats are now 26-19 on the season, and will have a rematch against Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday morning at 11AM to decide the Region IX title. If Saint Vincent wins, the teams will meet again at 2PM. The winner will move on to the NAIA World Series in Idaho in late May.

"This is the first time in history that the Saint Vincent College baseball team has had a chance to play for a regional championship or a chance to play in the World Series," said Janosko. "These kids have been battling all season long and I expect them to battle again tomorrow. Hopefully they have one more day in them. Itís been a pleasure to coach them, and itís been a lot of fun."

5/12: SVC wins 9-8 in Region IX opener

The Saint Vincent Bearcats survived an exciting ninth inning to defeat Ohio Dominican University by a 9-8 score on Wednesday afternoon in Canton, Ohio in the first round of the NAIA Region IX Tournament.

Kevin Brogan worked into the ninth inning before yielding to Jeremiah Scott on the mound for SVC. Brogan improved his record to 7-0 while Scott earned his first save of the season.

Saint Vincent (25-18) started the scoring in the top of the first inning, when Joe Pichler doubled home Jon Hanczaryk, who had walked. ODU scored once in the bottom of the first, then took a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

With one out in the top of the third, Bearcat Shaun Wenz drew the first of his three walks on the day off ODU starter Jon Sanchez. Danny Consuegraís double scored Wenz to tie the game. With two outs, Pichler was walked intentionally to bring Penn-Trafford grad Mike Hermann to the plate. Hermann responded with a three-run home run to left center field to give Saint Vincent a 5-2 lead.

Ohio Dominican closed the gap to 5-4 by scoring twice in their half of the fifth inning, but the Bearcats responded in the top of the sixth. Aaron Wilsonís double scored Russ Daniels, who had walked two batters earlier. Unfortunately, the Bearcats stranded runners at second and third.

Brogan, who gave up 15 hits on the afternoon, settled down in the sixth through eighth innings, holding a 6-4 lead. "Kevin threw a fantastic ballgame," said SVC Coach Mick Janosko. "He got tired as the game went on, because of the heat (87 degrees at game time). The last three or four innings, he was a better pitcher, since he had to take a little off and change speeds.

In the top of the ninth, the Bearcats added what appeared to be unneeded insurance runs. Wilson singled to lead off. Joe McBroom, pinch running for Wilson, moved to second when Consuegra drew a walk with one out. Hanczaryk singled home McBroom, then scored along with Consuegra on a Pichler double, stretching the Bearcat lead to 9-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Ohio Dominican refused to quit, starting the last half of the ninth with three singles, loading the bases for shortstop Angel Lopez. Scott came on to relieve Brogan, but gave up a bases-clearing triple that made the score 9-7. The next ODU batter singled home Lopez to make it 9-8. ODUís Kyle Moore then hit a grounder to Pichler, who overthrew first. Arnoldo Rodgriguez attempted to score from first on the play, but was gunned down by Hanczaryk, who threw to Hermann for the out at the plate. On the play, however, Moore managed to move all the way to third base.

Scott was still facing a tough situation, with just one out and the tying run at third. Jeff Kidd hit a sharp grounder to Pichler, who was playing close at third. Moore broke for the plate, and Pichlerís throw made it to Hermann in time, and he successfully blocked the plate and held on to the ball despite a strong collision with Moore, for the second out.

The next batter, Aaron Yorde, hit a sharp grounder up the middle that was grabbed by Scott, who flipped to Hanczaryk to end the game.

The Bearcats managed just 8 hits on the afternoon. Consuegra was 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Pichler was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Wilson was also 2-for-4, with a double and single.

Janosko said, "Kevin (Brogan) did a great job. We played a good hitting ballclub and they outhit us, but their hits werenít causing damage until the 9th. Jeremiah came on with the bases loaded, facing their 3-4-and-5 hitters, which is not an easy task. He made a great play at the end, fielding his position well."

5/7-8: Bearcats win, advance to NAIA Region IX Tourney

The rain-suspended second game of the best-of-three series between Shawnee State University and Saint Vincent College ended Saturday afternoon, with the Bearcats holding on to win, 11-5.

SSU scored three runs in the top of the ninth, but SVC shortstop Danny Consuegra ended the game with an unassisted putout to give Kip Watkins the save for winning pitcher Kevin Brogan (6-0).

Shawnee State got off to a quick start, as Jeremy Wilson tripled to lead off the top of the second inning.  He later scored on an error to give SSU a 1-0 lead.  In the top of the third, Nick Wayne of SSU hit a home run to left center field to make it 2-0.

The Bearcat offense erupted in the top of the third, sending 15 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on seven hits.  Josh Dziomba started the rally with a leadoff single.  Aaron Wilson had two singles in the inning, while Jon Hanczaryk had a single and a double.

5/6: Bearcats hit four homers in playoff victory

The Saint Vincent Bearcats won the first game of a best-of-three playoff series against Shawnee State University by a final score of 9-6.

The Bearcats hit four home runs on the afternoon to come from behind for the victory. Joe Pichler homered twice, Danny Consuegra and Russ Daniels once each for the winners (23-18).

Jeremiah Scott worked the first 8 innings for the victory, while Kip Watkins entered with a runner on first in the top of the ninth and recorded the final three outs to earn the save.

Consuegra, Shaun Wenz and Mike Hermann each went 3-for-4 for SVC.  In addition to his home run, Consuegra added a single and double, scored twice and drove in three runs.  Wenz singled, doubled and tripled, while Hermann doubled twice and singled.

Pichler was 2-for-4 with two solo shots.

Scott scattered eight hits and gave up four earned runs, walked four and struck out six.

Saint Vincent trailed 2-0 after a Nick Wayne home run in the top of the first for Shawnee State (17-23).  SVC tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the first.  Wenz led off with a triple then scored on a Consuegra single.  Consuegra later scored on a Jon Hanczaryk sacrifice fly.

SSU scored twice again in the top of the second after a couple of SVC errors, but Consuegra's two-run homer off starter and losing pitcher Brian Hines tied the game at 4-4.  After yielding an unearned run to SSU in the top of the fourth, the Bearcats rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Josh Dziomba singled home Daniels to tie the game, and the Bearcats went ahead to stay when Aaron Wilson's grounder scored Dziomba.  Pichler's home runs in the 5th and 7th innings, along with Daniels HR in the 8th supplied insurance runs for Saint Vincent.

5/1-5/2: Bearcats win, clinch AMC North title

The Saint Vincent Bearcats, coached by Mick Janosko, clinched the American Mideast Conference North Division title with a victory on Saturday at Walsh University.

Saint Vincent held on for a 9-8 victory in a game that was called due to rain with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jeremiah Scott worked the first 5.3 innings for the victory, and Ben Stoltzfus came on for the save.

Joe Pichler led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a home run, his second in two days, an RBI and two runs scored.  Mike Hermann, who was 2-3, also homered and drove in two runs for the Bearcats.

Danny Consuegra was 2-4 with a double and 3 runs batted in, while Jon Hanczaryk was 1-4 with a double and one RBI.

Game two of the doubleheader was postponed and played Sunday afternoon in Latrobe.  Walsh was victorious by a score of 13-10.

Saint Vincent will host a best-of-three series against the fourth place team from the AMC South Division (team has yet to be determined) beginning Thursday.  Game time is tentatively set for 2PM at Bearcat Park.

4/30: Bearcats, Walsh Cavaliers trade victories

The Bearcats came from behind in semi-dramatic fashion to win game one by the final score of 6-5 in nine innings.

The drama came in the bottom of the seventh inning. SVC trailed by a 5-2 margin, managed to cut the lead to 5-3, then tied the game when Joe Pichler hit a two-run homer to center field.

After failing to score following a leadoff triple in the bottom of the eighth, SVC tallied the game-winner in less-than-dramatic fashion, when Walsh's relief pitcher walked four batters (one intentionally) in the bottom of the ninth.  Josh Dziomba was credited with the game winning RBI by drawing the walk that scored Pichler from third.

Shaun Wenz was 2-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base for SVC.  He was also hit by a pitch.  Joe Pichler was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and 2 RBI.  Pichler scored three times.

Also for SVC, Mike Hermann was 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.  Sophomore Kevin Brogan started and struggled early, but settled down and went the distance, raising his record to 5-0.  He game up 8 hits, 4 earned runs, walked two, hit three batters and struck out 7.

In game two, SVC's Kip Watkins started and took the loss on the mound, as Walsh defeated SVC by a 6-0 score.  Watkins' counterpart from Walsh, senior Brad Hubert, pitched a perfect game, facing the minimum 27 batters, walking none, giving up no hits and striking out six.

In game two, Jason McAllister pitched well, but the Bearcats lost by the final score of 8-7.  Three of the runs given up by McAllister were unearned.

Wenz was 2-3 in the second game with a walk and 2 RBI.  Danny Consuegra was 3-4 and scored three runs.  Gratchic was 2-3 with a walk and a run batted in.

Taking a break from their conference schedule, the Saint Vincent Bearcats took a trip to Clarion University on Monday, splitting a twinbill.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Josh Morrow led off with a single.  Aaron Wilson was then hit by a pitch.  Cy Haponski and Zack Lukon, who were pinch running for Morrow and Wilson, were moved ahead to second and third by a perfect sacrifice bunt laid down by Mike Welc.

A single by Consuegra scored Haponski to tie the game at four.  The next batter, Hanczaryk, then hit a sacrifice fly to score the winning run.

"That's the fifth time this season we've won in the last at bat," said Bearcat Coach Mick Janosko.  "These guys just never quit."
