2006-07 Game Recaps

11/17 - Washington College

Saint Vincent soundly defeated Washington College 64-30 in the Bearcats' season opener at the Manhattanville College Castle Classic in White Plains, NY.

Ian McCollough led all scorers with 13 points, while the Bearcat defense forced 26 turnovers and held the Shoremen to just 18 percent (7-37) from the field.

The Bearcats were able to overcome a sluggish start in a sloppy first half, as the two teams combined to shoot just 12-50 from the field in the first half, while neither squad connected on a shot from behind the three-point line.

Washington stuck around early, trailing just 12-10 with seven minutes to go.  The Bearcats then went on an 8-3 run to close out the half's scoring, and carried the momentum into the second frame, going on a 20-6 run over the first nine minutes following the intermission, with nine of those tallies coming from McCollough.   The Bearcats put the game out of reach after a Roscoe Biggers three-pointer sandwiched between a fast-break dunk from Javille Brooks and a Raymar Byrd baseline drive put SVC up 57-21.

McCollough was the only player from either squad to score in double-figures, but the Bearcats boasted a very balanced offensive attack.  Biggers, Brooks, and Marc Duncan each added eight points, while freshman Phil Masciantonio scored six in his collegiate debut.  Brooks led both sides with seven rebounds, while Biggers added five assists and four steals.

11/18 - Kean

Javille Brooks scored 23 points and added 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as the Bearcats fell 82-66 to Kean College in the championship game of the Manhattanville College Castle Classic.

The Bearcats also found themselves in early foul trouble, committing their tenth as a team just 11 minutes into the contest.  Kean was able to capitalize at the charity stripe, connecting on 12 of 15 free throws over the first 20 minutes.  Their blazing shooting wasn't limited to the foul line, as they shot 65 percent from the field (14-22) in the first frame, and 63 percent (25-40) for the game.

With just over 3:00 left in the firt half and Kean up 37-23, the Bearcats made a mini-run, cutting the deficit to eight points (39-31) with six points coming from Brooks.  The Cougars, however, scored the final four points of the half to take a 43-31 lead into the break. Kean's momentum carried into the second half, as the New Jersey squad extended the lead to 20, 52-32, just three minutes in.

Despite the large deficit, the Bearcats refused to give up, playing their best basketball of the game in the latter stages of the secod half.  SVC went on a 17-5 run, forcing turnovers on four consecutive Kean possessions, to make the score 79-63 with just over two minutes to go.  The Bearcats, however, would not get any closer, and returned to Latrobe with a 1-1 record.

Joining Brooks in double-digits was Jonny Hasson, who scored 12, and Billy Bains with 10.  Following the contest, Brooks was named to the all-tournament team.

11/25 - Point Park

The Bearcats battled until the game's final seconds, but fell to undefeated Point Park University by a score of 84-80 in the first round of the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational.

Saint Vincent fought back from an 12-point deficit to cut the margin to just one with six seconds remaining.  After PPU's Gavin Prosser hit a free throw to make it 82-80, SVC still had an opportunity following Prosser's miss on the second shot.  However, SVC was unable to control the rebound, which bounced into the hands of the Pioneers' Ryne Liggins, who hit a layup with one second remaining to seal the victory for Point Park (10-0).

The Bearcats led early in the game and for much of the first half thanks to a balanced offensive attack.  A Roscoe Biggers three-pointer with 8:31 remaining in the first half gave SVC a 25-16 lead, but Point Park fought back, thanks to success at the foul line.  A free throw with 28 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Pioneers a 40-39 lead at the break.  The first half figures showed Point Park scoring 14 points at the charity stripe, while the Bearcats did not have an opportunity to shoot a single foul shot.

Point Park came out swinging in the second half, scoring 10 unanswered points to make it 50-39.  The margin ran as high as twelve (59-47) before five quick points by Tre'sor Kalambay brought SVC back into the game.

The Bearcats continued to fight back, despite losing Jonny Hasson and Mike Medved to injuries (both later returned).  A Pioneer turnover into the hands of Marc Duncan led to a Kalambay layup that cut the margin to three (71-68) with 4:44 remaining.  A steal and bucket by Prosser ran the lead back to eight, 76-68, with 3:06 left, but SVC refused to quit, thanks to strong play by Javille Brooks.

A layup by Brooks with 45 seconds remaining made it a one-point game, 79-78, but a Chivas Whipple rebound and score put Point Park back up by three with 22 seconds on the clock.  Brooks then drove to the net with 14 seconds remaining to make it 81-80, setting up Prosser's foul shot and Liggins' late score.

SVC (1-2) was led on the day by Brooks, who scored 21 and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Billy Bains added 15, while Kalambay added 13 off the bench.  Hasson scored 8 points before leaving the game for a second time with an ankle injury late in the second half, while Medved added 7 points and six boards.

11/26 - PSU-Fayette/CMU Tournament

The Bearcats returned to winning form with a 96-59 victory over Penn State-Fayette in the consolation game of the Carnegie Mellon University Tournament.

Javille Brooks topped all scorers with 26 points, scored in just 25 minutes on the court.  Tre'sor Kalambay, making his first start of the year after a solid performance off the bench on Saturday, tallied 21 and grabbed 7 rebounds.  Freshman Phil Masciantonio scored 18 points off the bench.

Marc Duncan, making his first start of the year, had a double-double, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Raymar Byrd added 10 rebounds.  Maurice Hawkins added 9 points and 6 boards.

11/27 - PSU-Dubois

The Bearcats defeated the Lions from Penn State's Dubois campus by a score of 65-56.

PSU stayed in the game until the last four minutes, when a series of big plays by junior Raymar Byrd opened the Bearcat lead and helped to secure the win.

SVC led 29-22 at the half, keyed by 8 points by Billy Bains.  The Bearcats increased the lead to eleven (49-38) with eight minutes remaining, but the Lions continued to claw their way back into the game.  A runner by Brandon Krug followed by a Marcus Genevro free throw cut the margin to three (50-47).  A pair of free throws by SVC's Bains made it 52-47, setting the stage for a blocked shot by Byrd.  He then scored the game's next four points to increase the Bearcat lead to 56-47 and deflated the Lions.

Bains led SVC with 13 points, followed by Byrd, who added 10.  Javille Brooks, Phil Masciantonio, Tre'sor Kalambay and Marc Duncan each scored 8.  Byrd and Javille Brooks led in rebounds with 8 each.

12/2 - Franciscan

The Bearcats got off to a fast start and never looked back, en route to a 98-47 victory over visiting Franciscan University.

SVC opened up an 8-0 lead in the game's first three minutes and continued to build the lead throughout the opening frame, taking a 43-17 lead at the break.  Raymar Byrd posted 12 points in the first half for Saint Vincent (4-2).

The Bearcats opened the second half with a 22-8 run and continued to pull away.

In all, five Bearcats reached double figures in points for the night, led by Tre'sor Kalambay with 21.  Javille Brooks added 19,  Billy Bains 13, Byrd 12 and Jonny Hasson had 12.   Brooks had a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds.  Marc Duncan also had 11 rebounds for SVC to go along with 8 points.  Mike Watkins added 7 boards.  Roscoe Biggers had 5 assists in just 10 minutes of play.

12/4 - PSU-Beaver

The Bearcats extended their win streak to four with a 65-54 victory over Penn State-Beaver.

SVC's relentless defense kept the Lions in check in the early portion of the game, causing 9 turnovers in the game's first 10 minutes.  A free throw by Delon Bournes with 6:38 remaining in the first half ended an eight-minute scoreless streak for the Lions, and it would be another 1:14 until the visitors hit a field goal.   At the half, the SVC lead was 34-17, with Raymar Byrd scoring 11 in the opening frame for the Bearcats (5-2).

SVC went on a nine-point run early in the second half to extend the lead to 43-20, but PSU then embarked on a 13-2 run to cut the margin to twelve (45-33).  The visitors refused to give up, and a Tim Kubis three pointer with 6:24 remaining cut the margin to just nine, at 54-45.  A pair of free throws by Joe Daransky cut it to 54-47 before a key bucket by Tre'sor Kalambay stopped the PSU rally.

Jonny Hasson then took charge for SVC, scoring six straight points on a three-pointer and a trio of free throws to make it 62-47 with 2:30 remaining.  Penn State was unable to regroup.

Hasson was the Bearcats' top scorer on the night with 17, followed by Byrd, Javille Brooks and Billy Bains, each with 12.   Brooks was the game's top rebounder with 9.

12/9 - Thomas More College

The Bearcats won their fifth straight, defeating Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More 67-61 at Carey Center.

SVC started slowly, going down 13-6 just five minutes into the first frame.  The Bearcat defense then clamped down, forcing three consecutive Saints turnovers, fueling an 11-4 run capped off with a Jonny Hasson three that put SVC up 18-17 at the 7:30 mark.

SVC's lead eventually stretched to 28-20 on a Roscoe Biggers trey with 3:40 left, but the Saints battled back, eventually gaining a 31-30 halftime advantage.

The play went back and forth in the opening minutes of the second half, with three lead changes in the first 1:20, until Bearcat guard Billy Bains brought the house down with a thunderous two-handed slam off a baseline drive over two defenders to give SVC a 36-33 advantage.

The Bearcats outscored the Saints 23-10 over the first 10 minutes of the second half, gaining their largest lead of the afternoon, 53-41, on a Hasson free throw at the 9:55 mark.

Thomas More refused to go away, using a 14-6 run of their own to shrink the SVC advantage to 59-55 with three minutes left.  It was as close as the Saints would get, however, and the Bearcats picked up the six-point victory.

Hasson led Saint Vincent with 18 points, and was joined in double-figures by Bains with 14.  Hasson, Mike Medved, Raymar Byrd, and Javille Brooks each grabbed six rebounds to share the team lead.

12/16 - Franciscan

The Bearcats defeated Franciscan University for the second time in two weeks, winning 74-61 on the road in Steubenville, OH.

Billy Bains led the way with 18 points.  Tre'sor Kalambay added 16 points and Jonny Hasson tallied 15.

12/19 - Lake Erie College

A huge second half comeback propelled the the Lake Erie College Storm to an 88-80 victory over the Bearcats at the Carey Center.

In a fast-paced first half, SVC found itself down 9-2 just three minutes in, with seven of those points coming from Lake Erie's Howard Washington.

The Bearcats then clamped down, forcing six conscutive turnovers, tying the contest at 14 on a Marc Duncan three with 11 minutes left, and then taking a 16-14 lead on a Raymar Byrd bucket 30 seconds later.

SVC continued to find success from behind the arc, with Jonny Hasson nailing four treys over the final nine minutes of the first frame to give the Bearcats a 41-29 half time advantage.

The Bearcats then continued to pour it on in the second half, going on a four-minute, 14-0 run, with Tre'sor Kalambay scoring eight points, to go up 57-36 with 13:45 left in regulation.

The roles were then quickly reversed, thanks to a relentless pressure and trapping Storm defense, which forced 10 turnovers over the final 10 minutes of the regulation and held SVC to just five points over that span.

The Storm eventually tied the score at 67 with 3:17 left in regulation, but Roscoe Biggers quickly answered on the next Bearcat possession with a long three to put SVC up 70-67.

After a Lake Erie foul shot on the next trip down the court, both teams shared a number of scoreless possesions before SVC committed yet another turnover, giving the Storm the ball back with just over 30 seconds left.

Lake Erie's Derrick Thornton then beat the shot clock and the game clock, making a baseline lay up with 1.4 seconds left.  Kalambay quickly attempted a desperation 50-footer, narrowly missing, and the game headed into overtime.

The Storm scored on its first two trips in the extra period, going up 74-70.  The teams then shared baskets, with a driving, circus lay up by Billy Bains bringing the Bearcats to within two, at 76-74.  It was as close as SVC would get, however, as they were forced to foul as time wound down.  The Storm made 12 of 15 free throws in overtime, sealing the 88-80 comeback win.

Three Bearcats scored in double-figures, including Kalambay (19), Hasson (17), and Biggers (15).  Byrd and Bains each grabbed six boards to pace the Bearcats.

1/6 - W&J

The Bearcats were unable to begin the new year with a win, as they were defeated 76-68 by Washington & Jefferson.

There were three ties and five lead changes in the first half until W&J used a 5-0 run to go up 27-23 with 3:22 left on the clock.  The Bearcats' Billy Bains then hit a three and teammate Javille Brooks cashed in on a lay up to give the Bearcats a 28-27 advantage at the 2:00 mark.

A Roscoe Biggers foul shot pushed the SVC lead to two points, but W&J's Brandon Studer, who scored a game-high 21, hit a jumper with five seconds left to even the score at 29 at the half.

The Presidents came out of the intermission on fire, outscoring Saint Vincent 19-6 to take a 48-35 lead with 11:28 left in regulation.

Saint Vincent was able to cut the W&J lead to single digits with 5:45 left when Marc Duncan and Jim Ewing connected on jumpers on back to back trips to make the score 65-58.

Two minutes later, the Bearcats' Mike Medved intercepted a pass and connected with Duncan who finished the fast break with a lay up to make the score 67-60.

After a trio of W&J foul shots, Duncan hit a free throw and nailed another jumper to cut the deficit back to seven at 70-63.  It was as close as SVC would come, however, as the Presidents hit six of eight foul shots over the final 1:03 to ice the victory.

Duncan and Bains each scored 13 points to lead the Bearcats, with Biggers adding 10 points in just 14 minutes of play.  Javille Brooks led SVC with eight rebounds while adding nine points.

1/10 - Westminster

In a game that showcased two high powered offenses, the Westminster Titans defeated the Bearcats 93-89 at the Robert S. Carey Center.

Bearcat senior Javille Brooks enjoyed a career night in the loss, scoring 26 points while adding 20 rebounds, while teammate Billy Bains netted 20.

Five players scored in double-figures for the Titans, led by Craig Hannon's 29 points.

In a fast-paced first half, Westminster took a 9-1 lead just two minutes in, but SVC answered right back, cutting the deficit to 9-7.

The trend continued over the first 20 minutes, with Westminster ejoying their largest lead of the game (32-17) with 8:31 left in the half.

The Bearcat duo of Brooks and Bains then combined for 12 points over the next minute and a half, while SVC's defense held the Titans scoreless, to tie it up with five minutes remaining.

SVC then seized its first lead of the night with 2:50 to go, after four more consecutive points from Bains.  The Titans then outscored the Bearcats 9-2 over the final 2:30 to take a 45-40 lead into the intermission.

The early stages of the second half remained tight, with the Bearcats getting to within two points on three different occasions over the first six minutes.

On the strength of two three pointers, the Titans were able to up their advantage to seven with 11:30 left, but the Bearcats answered with a 12-0 run of their own, capped off with a Jonny Hasson three-pointer, to gain a 73-68 advantage at the 8:30 mark.

Westminster shooters then caught fire, using five threes over the next six minutes to take an 89-80 lead with 1:40 left in regulation.

Brooks was then able to connect on four free throws, and the Bearcats forced turnovers on three consecutive Westminster possessions, eventually pulling to within two with 14 seconds left in regulation.

A missed one-and-one attempt by the Titans appeared to give SVC a shot at tying the contest, but on the ensuing trip down the court, the Titans forced a turnover and then hit four free throws to end the thriller.

The story of the night was the three-point shooting of Westminster, as they connected on 16 of 30 attempts from long range (53 percent), including nine in the second half.  Conversely, the Bearcats shot just 2-10 from the arc on the night.

Marc Duncan joined Brooks and Bains in double-figures, scoring 10, while Roscoe Biggers paced the offense with six assists.

Greg Rosatelli (20 points), Dom Joseph (17), Chauncey Whitlow (11), and Steve Bielich (10) joined Hanlon in double figures for Westminster (9-5), and the five combined to shoot 15-25 from behind the arc.

The Bearcats, led by Brooks, owned the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds, compared to Westminster's 17.  SVC's defense also forced 26 turnovers while committing 16.

1/13 - Grove City College

A strong Bearcat comeback against Grove City on the road fell short, as SVC lost by a score of 63-62.

Grove City led from the start, working their lead as high as 11 points in the first half.  Thanks in part to nine points by Roscoe Biggers, Saint Vincent was able to keep the margin in single digits at the half, trailing 37-28.  SVC struggled from outside the arc, going 0-for-9 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes.

Billy Bains remedied that situation at the outset of the second half, hitting two treys in the first minute to cut the margin to 37-35.  A drive by Mike Medved tied the game at 37 with 17:33 left, marking the first time the game had been tied since the opening tip.

The Wolverines regained momentum quickly and continued to lead throughout much of the second half as well, building a six-point lead (57-51) before Bains knocked down his fourth three-pointer of the half to cut the margin to three with 2:45 remaining.  Unfortunately, both Bains and Javille Brooks would soon foul out for SVC.

While Grove City was adding points via the charity stripe, Saint Vincent's Tre'sor Kalambay had the hot hand, scoring seven points late in the game to keep things close.  A Kalambay free throw with 36 seconds remaining made it 62-60 Grove City, and the Bearcats managed to foul GCC's Mark Smith with 21 seconds remaining.  He hit one of two shots to make it 63-60, but Saint Vincent was unable to get a shooter open outside the arc on the ensuing play.  Marc Duncan was forced to drive the lane and hit a layup with 3.9 seconds remaining to make it 63-62.  Duncan then stole the inbound pass, but was unable to convert a shot at the buzzer.

Saint Vincent (7-6) was led by Bains, who scored 14 points.  Biggers added 10, while Brooks and Kalambay added 9 each.  Duncan scored 8.  Brooks was the game's top rebounder (9).

1/15 - PSU-Dubois

The Bearcats ended their four-game losing skid with an 84-70 victory on the road over Penn State Dubois.

Javille Brooks topped all SVC scorers with 19 points, while Billy Bains added 18 -- all in the second half.  Marc Duncan scored 13, while Jonny Hasson had 12, Roscoe Biggers 10 and Raymar Byrd scored 10.  Brooks grabbed 7 rebounds, while Biggers dished out 8 assists and Duncan had four steals.

1/17 - Thiel College

The Bearcats won their second straight with a convincing 72-55 victory over Thiel College on the road in Greenville, PA.

Billy Bains led the way with 19 points.  Javille Brooks scored 14 and had a game-high 9 rebounds, while Mark Duncan added 10 points.

Saint Vincent (9-6) shot well throughout the game, hitting 53% from the floor for the night while holding Thiel to just 38%.

1/20 - Waynesburg

The Bearcats jumped out to a hot start and were then able to hold off a Waynesburg comeback to pick up an 87-78 victory at the Carey Center.

SVC forward Javille Brooks led all scoeres with 25 points while adding 13 rebounds, and teammate Jonny Hasson scored 15 points to lead the Bearcats to their third straight victory.  Billy Bains (12 points), Marc Duncan (11), and Tre'sor Kalambay (11) joined Brooks and Hasson to put five Bearcats in double figures.  Point guard Roscoe Biggers recorded a career high with 11 assists for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead off the bat, and eventually led 30-11 just nine minutes into the contest after Marc Duncan picked up a steal and hit a jumper.

Waynesburg quickly surged back, going on a 16-2 run capped off with a Beau Wilson three pointer with six minutes left in the first half.  SVC then regained control, eventually taking a 43-36 advantage into the half.

The visiting Yellow Jackets came out of the intermission on fire, thanks to a deadly showing from beyond the three-point line.   Marc Lodovico hit treys on consecutive possessions, followed by a three from Jeff Nero, to tie the game at 51.  Another trey from Wilson gave Waynesburg their first lead of the night, 55-54, with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Bearcats went on a 16-3 run, with three treys made by Hasson, to take a 71-57 advantage with 7:45 to go.

Waynesburg cut their deficit to six points, 78-72, with 1:20 left, but were forced to foul, and the Bearcats were up to the task at the line, hitting nine of 13 free throws to ice the victory.

1/24 - Bethany College

It took two overtimes, but Bethany College escaped Latrobe with a 107-105 victory over the Bearcats.

SVC junior Javille Brooks scored a career-high 34 points, while teammate Marc Duncan recorded a double-double with a career-high 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough.

The Bison had five players in double-digits, led by Brody Jackson (33 points) and James Wallace (28).  Jackson was successful on seven of nine attempts from beyond the three-point line.

The game was back and forth from the start, as the teams exchanged leads six times over the first six minutes of the contest.  The Bearcats were able to open up a seven point lead on a Duncan basket with nine minutes left in the first, and the teams shared baskets throughout the remainder of the half as SVC took a 39-35 advantage into half time.

A frantic second half began with Bethany going on a 9-2 advantage to take a 44-41 lead at the 17:30 mark.  The teams once again went back and forth, with neither enjoying an advantage of more than three points for the next eight minutes.

With 3:55 remaining in the second half, Roscoe Biggers hit a long three for the Bearcats to go up 78-73.  They were three of a career-high 19 for the senior point guard, while he also added eight assists.

After a Bethany bucket, Brooks scored two more to put SVC back up by five with under three minutes to go, but Wallace was fouled while scoring a bucket, and canned the subsequent free-throw, to bring the Bison back to within two.

Two free throws from Brooks gave SVC another four-point advantage with two minutes to go, but Bethany's Marcus Adams connected on four shots in two trips to the charity stripe to tie it up with 30 seconds to go.

On the next possession, Brooks scored on a lay in at the nine second mark, but he was then quickly whistled for his fifth foul of the night, and Jackson connected on both foul shots with three seconds ago to send the game into overtime tied at 86.

Bethany seized the early momentum in the extra session, starting on an 8-4 run after Chris Stephens connected on an and-one with 3:30 to go.

SVC scored four of the next six points, but two more shots from the foul line by Wallace once again put the Bison up by four, 98-94, with two minutes to go.

Bearcat Jim Ewing then connected on a hook shot, Bains picked off a Bison pass, and Duncan connected on two free throws to knot the game up at 98 with a minute left.

After two scoreless trips down the court, Stephens hit two more from the line to put the Bison up 100-98 with just over ten seconds to go.  Duncan then scored on a driving lay up through traffic at the three second mark to send the game into a second overtime tied at the century mark.

The lead changed hands five more times in the second extra session, with the teams enjoying a one-point advantage each time.

With just over  40 seconds to go and SVC with the basketball, Biggers missed a three in the corner, but Bains came up with the offensive rebound to give the Bearcats the ball back and a new shot clock.  Bethany, however, forced a turnover and Jackson hit his seventh trey of the night to put the Bison up 107-105 with 18 seconds left.

Two attempts from Kalambay to tie the game then came up short, and the game came to an end.

1/27 - Thomas More College

The Bearcat defense played well in a 58-47 victory over the Thomas More Saints on the road.

Thomas More led through much of a low-scoring first half.  Unfortunatley, the beginning of a turnaround for the Bearcats cost the team a  key starter.  With 3:40 remaining in the half, Billy Bains drove into the lane and went up for a shot, but was flipped in midair, landing on his wrist and head.  He was not able to return to the game.

Jonny Hasson hit the ensuing free throws to tie the game at 20-20.  A minute later. Marc Duncan hit a 15-foot jumper which gave SVC a 22-20 lead.  There was no scoring in the final 2:50 of the half.

Thomas More scored a quick five points to open the second half to reclaim the lead, but a Jonny Hasson three-pointer with 17:40 remaining put SVC up to stay, 27-25.

The Bearcats continued to play tough defense throughout the second half, holding Thomas More to just 28% shooting from the floor.

Marc Duncan led SVC with 16 points, while Javille Brooks added 12 points and 11 rebounds.   Hasson added 11 points.

1/31 - Westminster College

The Westminster Titans opened up a giant lead early, then held of a comeback attempt by the Saint Vincent Bearcats. The final score was 94-86.

Westminster led by as many as 25 in the first half before SVC started its comeback, cutting the gap to 18 at the half (54-36).

The battle continued in the second half, as a Javille Brooks dunk with 6:24 remaining brought the margin down to just two (75-73).  The Titans (13-7) then managed to regroup and hold off the visitors.

Brooks topped all scorers in the game with 32.  Marc Duncan added 20 points and 9 rebounds for SVC (11-8), while Jonny Hasson scored 15.

2/1 - Ohio University-Eastern

Marc Duncan, Javille Brooks and Jim Ewing each recorded a double-double in a 92-63 Bearcat win over visiting Ohio University-Eastern.

SVC jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and never looked back, despite a run by the Panthers midway through the first half.  Thanks mostly to the efforts of sophomore Steve Luckhardt, OUE cut the margin to 21-19 before SVC went on an 18-2 tear which made it 39-21.  SVC held a 51-36 lead at the half and never looked back.

Duncan just missed a triple-double on the night, tallying 12 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds.  He was one of five Bearcats to score in double figures.

Brooks led the Saint Vincent side of the ledger with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Ewing added a career-high 14 points and 11 boards.  Tre'sor Kalambay had 14 points and 7 rebounds, and Jonny Hasson scored 11 points.  Jordan Cleary had his best night as a Bearcat, scoring 9 points on a trio of three-pointers, while Raymar Byrd just missed a double-double, scoring 8 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

2/3 - W&J

The Saint Vincent Bearcats fought hard but lost to Washington & Jefferson in overtime by a score of 88-83.

The game was close throughout the first half.  The teams traded leads several times en route to a 34-33 haftime score with W&J in front.

A Jim Ewing score to open the second half gave SVC the lead, 35-34, an dthey managed to hold the lead until the 11:50 mark, when W&J's Jon Koch hit a three-pointer to tie the game 50-50.

The Presidents built a six-point lead (68-62) with just under five minutes remaining, but the lead was cut to four after a pair of free throws by Javille Brooks.  Unfortunately, Brooks fouled out shortly thereafter, leaving SVC without its top scorer.

The Bearcats still trailed by six (72-66) late, but Tre'sor Kalambay hit a three-pointer to make it 72-69 with just over a minute remaining.  Billy Bains sunk a free throw with 48 seconds left to make it a two-point game.  He missed the second shot, but Marc Duncan alertly grabbed the rebound, then fed Kalambay who drove the lane and scored with 34 seconds left to tie the game at 72.   W&J failed to convert a last-second opportunity, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, the lead changed hands several times.  With 1:18 remaining and a one-point deficit, SVC's Billy Bains stepped to the foul line and converted both shots to give SVC an 81-80 lead, but W&J's Brandon Studer scored with 1:00 left to give W&J the lead, and SVC failed to score on their next trip down the court.  Studer added a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game, and SVC again failed to score and was forced to foul Koch, the game's top scorer.  He hit four late free throws to send W&J to the win.

Brooks topped the SVC scoresheet with 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Marc Duncan added 16 points and 7 boards.  Tre'sor Kalambay and Billy Bains scored 14 each, while Jim Ewing had a game-high 11 rebounds.

2/7 - Thiel College

Four players scored in double figures and Saint Vincent shot 55 percent from the field as it defeated Thiel College 77-63 at the Carey Center.

Javille Brooks led the Bearcats with 21 points, while Billy Bains scored 13, Marc Duncan 12, and Raymar Byrd 10.

SVC looked poised to take control from the start, as an alley oop dunk from Duncan to Bains put SVC up 12-5 and brought the crowd to its feet just four minutes in.

Thiel felt differently, however, using an 10-5 run to pull to within two three minutes later, and eventually tying the contest at 21 with 8:30 remaining in the first frame.

Nine of the game's next 11 points were scored by the Bearcats, with a pair of Bains free throws giving the home team a 30-23 lead with 6:02 left until the break.

Once again the Tomcats came back, evening the score at 36 on a circus lay up by Cory Chafee with two seconds left in the first half.

The second half belonged to Saint Vincent, as they went on a 17-4 run over the first six minutes, capped off by a pair of highlight reel lay ups made by Brooks, to go up 53-40.

Thiel's Joe Herrmann, the leading scorer and rebounder in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, then picked up his fourth foul of the night with 13 minutes left in regulation.  He had scored 14 first half points, but was then used sparingly over the remainder of the game, picking up just three points over the final 20 minutes.

With Herrmann out, the SVC inside game then went to work on the undersized Tomcats, with the duo of Byrd and seven-foot Jim Ewing combining for 12 points and nine boards over the final 11 minutes of the contest.

Thiel came back to within seven, 59-52, at the ten minute mark, but SVC put the game out of reach for a final time after a 16-5 run gave them their largest lead of the night, 75-57, with just under two minutes left on the clock.

The Bearcat defense forced 14 Thiel turnovers in the second half, and held the Tomcat shooters to just a 38 percent mark from the field.

Cory Chafee led Thiel with 21 points, while Herrmann finished with 17 and Gino Bianco came off the bench to pick up the double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Brooks connected on 10-14 shots on the night for SVC, while Duncan led both sides with eight assists and Bains grabbed a game-high six steals.

2/10 - Grove City College

On Senior Night at the Carey Center, the Bearcats held off a furious second half rally by Grove City to secure an 84-74 win.

The four Bearcat seniors playing in their final game in front of the SVC faithful, including Marc Duncan, Javille Brooks, Jonny Hasson, and Raymar Byrd, all turned in solid performances.

Duncan scored a game and career high 27 points, while Brooks added 20 and Hasson scored 11.  Byrd led the Bearcats with eight rebounds, while sophomore Billy Bains was a fourth Bearcat that scored in double-figures with 12.

The game was back and forth in the early stages with the score at 15-13 in favor of the Bearcats nine minutes in.  The SVC offense then erupted, going on a 21-5 run, with Bains scoring eight and Duncan six, to take a 36-18 lead into the half.

Brooks then took over following the intermission, scoring eight points over the first two minutes, and SVC went up by 20, 44-24.  Byrd and Duncan then scored a bucket apiece, and the Bearcats enjoyed their largest lead of the night, 48-24, with 16 minutes left in regulation.

SVC's lead hovered around the 20-point mark for the next several minutes, and then the Grove City offense erupted, thanks to the hot hand of Shawn Carr. The Wolverines went on a 21-8 run over a four minute span, with Carr hitting four treys, to pull to within four at 75-71 with just over two minutes left.

Two free throws from Bains gave the Bearcats some breathing room, and then a Tre'sor Kalambay jumper from the foul line put SVC up by seven, 79-72, with a minute left.  Grove City was forced to foul, and the Bearcats made five free throws over the final 50 seconds to secure the win.

It was an explosive half offensively for both teams, as they each hit on 57 percent of their shots (SVC went 17-30; GCC 19-33) and combined for a total of 104 points (GCC 56, SVC 48) in front of a standing room only Carey Center crowd.

Duncan's 27 points came by way of a 12-16 showing from the field, while Brooks led both sides with five steals and Bearcat forward Mike Medved picked up five blocked shots.

2/14 - Bethany College

The Bearcats lost a close game on the road to Bethany College, 76-73.

Four players scored in double-figures for SVC, including Javille Brooks (19 points), Tre'sor Kalambay (13), Marc Duncan (12), and Jim Ewing (12), but it wasn't enough, as Bethany was able to sweep the season series with the Bearcats.

Both offenses struggled in a very close first half that featured four ties and four lead changes.  Bethany enjoyed its largest lead of the half, 17-12, with 13 minutes left after a Joe Testa lay up.  Duncan then closed out an 8-2 run with a jumper at the 8:16 mark. Another Testa lay up gave the Bison a 26-23 advantage with 6:05 left, but it was the final field goal that the visitors would convert in the first half.  A Mike Medved basket that tied the score at 29 with 50 seconds left closed out the scoring for the half.

A three from Kalambay two minutes after the break gave SVC its first lead since the 8:16 mark of the first half, but it was short lived, as the Bison tied it up 90 seconds later.

With 12:45 left, Marc Palermo's trey gave Bethany a four point advantage, but lay ups by Brooks and Duncan evened the score again 30 seconds later.

A James Wallace lay up sandwiched between threes from Palermo and Stevens eventually gave the Bison a 62-57 lead with 7:27 remaining, but SVC then used an 8-2 run, closed out on a three-point play by Mike Medved, to go ahead 65-64 at the five minute mark.

The Bethany lead again stretched to five points, but Ewing scored four, including a pair of foul shots, to cut the SVC deficit to one with just over two minutes to go.

After a three-point play by Wallace and a Brooks lay up, Testa hit two more free throws to put Bethany up by five, 76-71, with 19 seconds on the clock.  The Bearcats couldn't immediately capitalized, though, and were forced to foul.

Bethany then missed three straight from the line, and Duncan drove the length of the court to pull the Bearcats to within three.

After two more missed free throws by the Bison, SVC had one final chance to tie the score with just over two seconds left, but were unable to get off a clean shot and were sent home with the 76-73 loss.

2/17 - Waynesburg College

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets downed the Bearcats by a score of 82-74 in the final game of the regular season.

The lead changed hands several times during the first half, which Waynesburg escaping to the locker room with a 36-35 lead.

SVC's Billy Bains came out sharp to start the second half, hitting a pair of three-pointers in the opening minute to put SVC up by a 41-36 tally, but Waynesburg, led by sharpshooter Beau Wilson, quickly rallied.  The Jackets embarked on a 22-7 run to make it 58-48 and SVC never fully recovered.

A rebound and putback by Jim Ewing cut the margin to just two (68-66) at the 5:20 mark, but that was as close as the Bearcats would get.

Bains led Saint Vincent with 24 points, including 5-for-9 shooting from outside the 3-point arc.  Tre'sor Kalambay and Javille Brooks each added 12 points, while Ewing scored 9 and had a game-high 12 rebounds.  Brooks added 8 boards.
