The Saint Vincent men's basketball team has achieved quite a few
feats over the past decade, but the Bearcats are on the verge of an
accomplishment that has never been done before in the team's history. The
Bearcats, owners of a 20-3 record overall and a 12-game winning streak,
are currently 11-0 at home heading into Wednesday's home finale against
Grove City. Dating back to last season, SVC has won 13 straight in the
Carey Center, with its last home defeat coming to Washington &
Jefferson on February 3, 2007.
While Saint Vincent's last two
home games were nailbiters, including a 77-76 win over Bethany on Feb.
9th and a 66-64 defeat of Geneva three days earlier, the Bearcats have
won the majority of their games on the home floor in convincing
fashion, outscoring their opponents by an average of 83-64.
The
Bearcats' success at home this season is hardly a surprise. Since the
1998-99 season, SVC has posted a staggering 116-24 record on its home
court. Since the Carey Center - formerly Kennedy Hall- was renovated
and rededicated just prior to the 2003-04 campaign (also the Bearcats'
first under head coach DP Harris), the Bearcats are 58-10 on their home
floor.
Should the Bearcats defeat Grove City this evening
for their 12th straight home win, they will top the 2004-05 squad which
finished with a 14-1 record in the Carey Center. Led by the likes of
Tony Washam, Kenny Roberts, and Jeff Mallory, the '04-05 squad won its
first three home games before dropping a late-November contest to
Cedarville University. The team then regrouped, winning the final 11
games played in Latrobe, topped off with a victory over Walsh
University in the American Mideast Conference championship game.
The
Bearcats have won their last two meetings with Grove City, including a
71-57 triumph exactly one month ago on the Wolverines' home floor. SVC
used the long ball to its advantage, as the Bearcats connected on a
season-high 12 three pointers. Junior point guard Joey Butler led all
scorers with 26 points, hitting six of nine from beyond the arc.
Teammate Tre'sor Kalambay hit four treys, and finished with 14 points,
while Ian McCollough added 12 and Mike Medved 10.
Grove City
should be a formidable foe for the Bearcats as they look to make
history. With a 15-8 overall record, the Wolverines own the second
best mark among teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, behind
only SVC. With an 8-3 mark in conference play, the Wolverines are in
second place in the PAC, behind Bethany. Grove City also enter
tonight's game on a bit of a roll, winning seven of its last 10.
The
Wolverines boast a balanced scoring attack, led by senior Shawn Carr's
14.1 points per game. The senior also leads the PAC in three-point
shooting, as he's hit on 49 percent (62-126) of his attempts from
beyond the arc. Grove City has also been one of the top defensive
teams in the conference, allowing opponents to shoot just 41 percent
from the field.
The Bearcats and Wolverines will take the
floor at 8pm Wednesday in the Carey Center, preceded by the Saint
Vincent and Grove City women, who will tip off at 6pm.
