The Bearcats will host Post University of Connecticut in the Eastern College
Athletic Conference Division II Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday night
at 7:30 in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
Saint Vincent (21-4) will be looking to complete an undefeated season in
Latrobe with the title match. The Bearcats, under Coach D.P. Harris, are 12-0
on their home court this year.
Post, which finished the year with a 14-14 overall record, was 10-6 in the
NCAA-II Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
The Bearcats will have to overcome a lengthy layoff. The team hasn't played
since a February 23 loss to Thomas More College on the road, which ended a
13-game winning streak. The Bearcats must also shake off the rust from being
unable to practice until this week. As a provisional NCAA-III member, Saint
Vincent was not eligible for the Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs or the
NCAA Tournament. Additionally, NCAA-III rules set limits to the number of
practice weeks per year, and in order to play in the ECAC Championship, SVC had
to take two weeks off from the court before returning this week.
Still, the Bearcats expect to be strong, led by senior Ian McCollough, who is
averaging 17.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Junior point guard Joey Butler
has put up 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game as well. The pair was
joined by junior Mike Medved (8.2 points, 5.2 rebounds per game) as recipients
of Coaches Awards by the PAC last week.
Post is led by Arthur Robertson, a 6-1 senior guard, who is averaging 16.7
points and 8.9 rebounds per game, and AJ Reitter, a 6-5 junior who has put up 15
points and 5 rebounds per game. The Eagles last played on March 1, losing to
Bloomfield College in their conference quarterfinals, 90-85, in double
overtime.
Tipoff for the game will be 7:30, and tickets are now on sale by contacting
the SVC Athletic Office at 724-805-2111. The game will also be heard live on
WCNS-AM 1480, Latrobe, and on the internet via the Red Zone Media Network, www.redzonemedia.com.
