What Can I Do With This Major?

The Career Planning and Decision-Making Process

Self-assessment: Identify your values, interests and skills, through discussion, and a variety of interest inventories and personality surveys.

Career Information:  Research occupations, trends, and training requirements using print and Internet resources. Research and consider various careers and learn about the changing workplace.

Career Search Techniques:  Shadow a professional in the field, conduct informational interviews, attend career and job fairs. Secure a mentor. Participate in  the  Internship and Cooperative Education Program. These career-related work experiences help you to reality test a career by working for one or more terms in an area related to your major and/or career interests.  As an intern you develop marketable skills needed to secure employment upon graduation, those that distinguish you among your peers. In many cases, interns are paid a wage or stipend to defray educational expenses. Internships help students to confirm career choices.

Skills and Work Values:  Identify and hone skill sets for particular careers. Learn the values required for success and survival in your chosen career. Apply the benedictine values to your life style.

Job Search Techniques:  Refine your interviewing, resume and cover letter writing, and job search skills through practice. Conduct a practice interview. Learn how to market yourself effectively to employers and graduate and professional schools.

Action Plan:  Demonstrate career maturity.  Learn and understand changing organizational and corporate cultures, identify mentors in the workplace, and apply strategies to advance your career. What are your current and future goals, values, strengths, weaknesses, and interests?  Establish a timeline for your future career plans.
