CP 01 Beginner Star on the Stage: Would you like to dabble... try a taste in the drama arts? Have interactive fun... while learning the key elements of acting? Students will prepare and experience drama presentation by participating in various skits under the coaching of Mrs. Stynchula. Mrs. Joy Stynchula is the Performing Arts Cultural Coordinator for the McFeely-Rogers Foundation for Greater Latrobe Schools. She is a Drama Theatre Course Instructor for Saint Vincent College.

CP 02 Contemporary Painting: Explore the ideas of visual culture in relationship to the works of selected “New American Painting” artists. Techniques such as underglazing, glazing layering, blending, as well as mixing color and paint medium in harmony with added abstraction techniques will allow students to explore and create his/her own contemporary acrylic painting. Tiffany Gratchic is currently earning her Masters in Education at SVC. She has an undergraduate degree in Art Education with minors in Art Studio and Math from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

CP 03 Debate With Me: This is your chance to learn great debate strategies…to enrich the skills you may already possess…and to participate in some fun debates that will challenge those skills. Mr. Fred Findley owns a multimedia business and teaches at Saint Vincent College. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. at Duquesne University.

CP 04 Math Puzzles Me: Students are invited to “twist their minds” with some exciting Math puzzles. Participants in this course will work together to solve various kinds of Math challenges.Dr. Daniele Arcara has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Georgia and is currently an assistant professor at Saint Vincent College.

CP 05 Mock Trial and the Justice System: Students become judge, jury, attorneys, witnesses, and defendants as the structure of our court system is explored via simulated trials conducted in the classroom. The course will focus on building, speaking, and writing skills and offers experiences critical decision making and logical analyses. Mr. Mark Sorice, Esquire is an attorney associated with a law firm in the Greensburg/Latrobe area.

CP 06 Music, Math and the Octaves: Did you ever wonder if music and math worked together? Come journey back to ancient Greece and discover how ratios, tuning, and music came to be…how music of Broadway has math running through it. No experience in music is necessary…just a willingness to try some new and exciting things. Tom Octave is currently an assistant principal at SVC. SESSION B – 10:20A.M. – 12:20 P.M.
CP 07 Brainy Explorations:Did you know you have more than one intelligence? Discover what your dominant intelligences are to capitalize on your learning and life! Throughthe experience of interactive, enjoyable activities, all multiple intelligences will be explored. This is an edu-tainment course... great fun while learning! Mrs. Joy Stynchula has instructed many informative and interesting seminars on the eight intelligences originated by Howard Gardner! She is also the Performing Arts Cultural Coordinator for the McFeely-Rogers Foundation and a Drama Theatre Course Instructor for Saint Vincent College.

CP 08 C.S.I. Challenge: Students will be presented with a simulated crime scene, collect evidence, talk to witnesses, etc. and then will decide what lab tests they will need to run to solve the crime. There will be various roles including detective, photographer, and medical examiner. (Instructor to be selected.)

CP 09 Internet Technology:Students will have the opportunity to learn computer technology of the future. Be one of the first students to learn the latest technical language and be taken well beyond your current level of computer knowledge. Problem solving will also be a key component in this course. Mr. Tony Perla is a graduate of Saint Vincent College and is the Director of Technology for Derry Area School District.

CP 10 Photography:Students will learn how to look at the landscapes, sunsets, and nature’s beauty to gain the perfect photographic shot. The art form of photography will be explored and experienced by the participants.Mr. David Safin has a Master’s Degree from California University of PA in multimedia technology. He is the Director of Multimedia Marketing and teaches Media Production courses at SVC.

CP11 Sim-Soc: Sim-Soc is an acronym for “simulated society”. Students will create their own functioning society within the realm of the classroom. The course is an experience that allows participants to understand the complexities of individual and group interaction and to learn the dynamics of power, persuasion, and cooperation.Dr.

CP 12 Video Magic: Lights, Camera, Action! Mr. Findley returns and invites students to write, shoot, and edit a creative television show shot live in the classroom. The course includes studio-style broadcasting including writers, camera operators, sound technicians plus actors and director. Mr. Fred Findley owns a multimedia business and teaches at Saint Vincent College. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. at Duquesne University.

SESSION C – 1:30 – 3:30 P.M.
CP 13 A Star on the Stage: This class is designed to enhance acting skills of the EXPERIENCED ACTOR! Students are prepared for a great play under the direction of Mrs. Stynchula. The performance to entertain the Challenge students/staff and family/guests is presented on Thursday at 4:00 PM. Potential thespians will definitely enjoy! CP 14 Cave 101: This course reveals the mysterious world of caves. Different types of caves will be studied as well as their most famous inhabitants…bats! Emphasis will be placed on the important role caves and bats play in our environment and the need for their protection. CP 15 History Mystery: Do you love to read mystery novels or to cheer on television/movie detectives as they crack the case? Travel back in time to explore age-old “Who dunnits” where you are the detective in this course. Brandi Lux graduated with a BA in History from Saint Vincent College and will receive her Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in May. She has been an intern teacher in the Franklin Regional School District during the 2008-2009 school year, and, prior to that, was a Youth Minister, working with grades 3-12. From her early elementary years through high school, Brandi was a student in the gifted program in the Greensburg Salem School District.

CP 16 iChallenge:Students will learn how to work with different multimedia elements as well as the fundamentals of web design. Participate in Apple’s iLife revolution and apply music, video, and pictures to create a website that advertises your 2008 Challenge experiences. Mr. Fred Findley owns a multimedia business and teaches at Saint Vincent College. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. at Duquesne University.

CP 17 Dancing Like a Star: Travel back to the 1920’s when Big Bands played and Jazz gave birth to the heart of Swing Dance. Students will immerse themselves in learning not only about this popular dance but learning to swing dance. No dance experience is necessary. Michael MacConnell is a recent graduate with an Elementary Instruction degree from SVC. He has been dancing and competing in Ballroom and Latin for over 3 years. Stephanie Compton is a Sophomore Education major at SVC and has been dancing swing for about two years. She is the current President of the Swing Dance Club at SVC.

CP 18 The Chemistry of Cooking:Even the simplest kitchen tasks such as boiling water, frying an egg, toasting (or burning) bread are dependent on chemistry. Students will learn about the chemical concepts as they relate to cooking and will use that knowledge to explain what is happening to food. Various “food happenings” such as slicing, frying, microwaving, boiling, baking, freezing, and tasting will be experienced by participants. Jason Vohs has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Georgia. He is presently a professor of various chemistry related courses at SVC. Jason is also the director of the Chemistry Club at Saint Vincent College.
