Four different nature camps that encompass the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at Saint Vincent College’s mission to foster environmental stewardship through education, recreation and conservation will be offered this summer.
Since 2008, these summer camps have instilled a love of nature and a sense of environmental stewardship through immersive nature experiences to more than 500 children in the Latrobe area and throughout the region.
Bug Camp is for children 5-6 years old accompanied by an adult and will be held June 27-29. Children are invited to ‘go buggy’ with hands-on investigations, games and mini-labs that will allow campers to search for and learn about butterflies, spiders, dragonflies, bees, beetles and other insects. Registration deadline is June 20.
Fur and Feather Camp is designed for children 6-8 years old and will be offered July 10-14. Campers will learn about songbirds, birds of prey and other birds native to Pennsylvania along with mammals that inhabit the region. Campers will take part in explorations, experiments, games, hikes and other activities as they explore Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve. Registration deadline is June 26.
Slime and Scales Camp is for children 6-8 years old and is scheduled for July 24-28. Campers will experience a week of learning and adventure as they explore the slimy and scaly world of amphibians and reptiles. Native toads, salamanders, frogs, turtles and snakes will visit throughout the week. Campers will also explore Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve in search of these creatures as they learn more about them. Registration deadline is July 10.
Eco-Adventure Camp is for children 9-12 years old and will be held from July 31 to Aug. 4. Children who are budding naturalists and like outdoor sports and adventure will find this new week-long experience an opportunity to explore the outdoors and enjoy activities such as geocaching, camping skills, nature exploration and discovery. Registration deadline is July 17.
Area residents are encouraged to join the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at Saint Vincent College in a growing tradition of exploring nature. For further details about registration and costs, visit http://wpnr.org/programs-events/summer-camps/.
