Jacob M. NoonanSaint Vincent College graduate Jacob M. Noonan of Carlisle was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police upon completion of his academy training on June 11, at a ceremony held at CCAC Northside. The award, which is decided by votes from his entire class, is presented to a cadet who demonstrates the highest level of leadership and selflessness throughout their seven months of training.

Noonan graduated in 2016 from Saint Vincent College with a degree in criminology, law and society. While attending college, he was heavily involved in addiction and research studies with Dr. Eric Kocian, along with the criminology club, football team and track team. When asked about his decision to enroll, he cited a number of influences. “When I was younger, I had a lot of family in law enforcement and the military whom I looked up to as role models. I knew since I was very young that I wanted to have a career in law enforcement, and Saint Vincent had a great criminology program and classes while also being close to home.”

Noonan also praised the faculty of the criminology department. When asked about the highlight of his experiences at SVC, Noonan mentioned the one-on-one interaction with his professors. “At SVC, I felt like I was more than a number. The professors have both academic and real-world experience, and I always felt like they were genuinely there to help me.”

Academically, Noonan says he was able to succeed thanks to his professors. “Dr. Kocian’s Ethics and Criminal Justice Class was one of my favorites. His class was discussion-based and opened up a lot of doors in my mind. It made me think about things in ways that I hadn’t before.” He asserted that these skills transferred well over to his scenario-based police training. Additionally, he mentioned his Intro to Criminology class as one of his favorites. “That was the first college class I ever had. After that session, I knew that I’d made the right choice for my major.”

Noonan currently lives in Pittsburgh, where he will begin working as a police officer within two weeks.
