Strands and Descriptions


In order to broaden the focus of the 9th annual CSAA conference, strands have been devised to allow participants to select what interests them most.  Proposals must address one of the four stands, but may focus on any aspect of country schools.  Proposals that have a high degree of participant interaction are encouraged. Bullets below each strand are for suggestions only.

 

Strand 1: Reconstruction, Preservation, and Restoration

  • Schoolhouse Museums
  • Architectures and Site Planning
  • Authentic Reconstructions
  • Restoration Efforts and Stories


Strand 2: Creative and Innovative Programs

  • Unique Living-Learning Museum Programs
  • Schoolmarm professions
  • K-12 Schoolhouse On-site and Off-site Instruction
  • Adult Education and/or Tour Programs


Strand 3: Historical Research and Curricula

  • Historical Academic and Student Achievement Standards
  • Schooling in America
  • Curriculum and Pedagogy
  • Social Histories and Traditions


Strand 4: Collaboration and Funding

  • Fundraising and Donations
  • Community Partnerships
  • Promotional Events and Planning

Types of Sessions


Qualified presenters are invited to submit proposals for presentations addressing the listed strands. A proposal may be for a Presentation, Workshop, Poster, or Roundtable.  Sessions are defined as follows:

1. Presentation – Thirty-minute sessions in which individuals present a topic relevant to the field.  Participant interaction is strongly recommended.

 2. Workshop – One-hour and thirty-minute sessions that are designed to provide instruction with a high degree of participant involvement.

3. Roundtable – One-hour sessions that provide participants the opportunity to discuss a topic with the presenter, author, and/or researcher in a small informal group.

 4. Poster – Lobby informal sessions that visually displays a research study, schoolhouse topic, or program/project.  Poster sessions are designed to foster maximum interaction with a passing audience.  Proposer (s) must be willing to construct a poster exhibit of high quality that can stand alone in conveying information.

Preparing a Proposal

Please prepare your proposal following these guidelines.  Proposals should be mailed or emailed to Dr. Veronica Ent no later than Sunday, February 15, 2009.  When emailing proposals, please format in Microsoft Word.

A.    Cover Page – limited to one page and should include:

  1. Title: Descriptive title to interest participants
  2. Type of Session: (Presentation, Workshop, Roundtable, Poster)
  3. Main Presenter/Main Contact: Name, Institution, Address, Office and home Phone numbers, e-mail address.
  4. Additional Presenter(s): Name(s), Institution(s), Address(es), Office and home Phone numbers, e-mail address(es).
  5. Appropriate Strand: 
    • Strand 1: Reconstruction, Preservation, and Restoration
    • Strand 2: Creative and Innovative Programs
    • Strand 3: Historical Research and Curricula
    • Strand 4: Collaboration and Funding
  6. Abstract: Provide a concise description of 25 words or less of the session content for use in the conference program
  7. Brief Biographical Sketch: Include a short description introducing the presenters and affiliations represented in this proposal.  The presider will read this at your session.

 

B.    Proposal Page – Description of the presentation, double-spaced typed.  Please address each of the following in the body of the proposal.

  1. Type of session
  2. Title
  3. Short rationale for strand selection
  4. Objectives of the presentation
  5. Summary of the session’s content (maximum 200 words)
  6. Plans for Participant involvement
  7. Technology needs

Equipment and Handouts


Saint Vincent College will provide LCD projectors and screens.  Please plan to bring a least 25 copies of handouts for distribution.  All presenters are required to register for the conference.  It will be the main presenter’s responsibility to see that all the co-presenters have paid registration fees upon proposal acceptance.
