The Future of the Past: Celebrating Our Country School Traditions Today
Country School Association of America Annual Conference at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA June 15, 16, & 17, 2009
Schoolhouse Touring One of the most unique opportunities that the CSAA conference provides is a schoolhouse tour. This tour is open to anyone interested in participating in a private opportunity to visit area schoolhouses that have been restored. There is no need to worry about fuel, directions, or transportation because CSAA arranges a comfortable touring bus that will travel to selected historical schools for Wednesday following the two days of sessions. This relaxing tour is arranged so that interested participants can actually visit schoolhouses, talk with owners or docents, and have unique opportunities to examine restored buildings that are often only open by appointment. Richmond Schoolhouse, Brighton Township, PAFood and refreshments are provided for all touring participants. This year two options have been devised: half-day and full day. See below for details on both tour options. The planned cost for participating in this year tour is $45.00 per person.
Half-Day Tour Option The half-day tour option has been design to offer a shorter morning tour that will allow participants to leave earlier from the conference. In the past, many participants would follow the bus in personal cars in order to leave at will. Sometimes this “train” would cause some traffic or parking confusion. Since many schoolhouses are rural and parking is limited, this option was devised. The half-day tour will include restored schoolhouses in Westmoreland County. Departing at 8:30 AM, participants electing the half-day tour will be shuttled to four local schoolhouses: - Concord School
- Atlantic 40
- Old Concord School
- Harrold School
- Lunch will be provided at the final stop, Hutchinson One-Room School replica, which is equipped with restrooms and air conditioning.

Full Day Tour Option The full-day tour option is for participants that are
very interested in the most unique schoolhouses. The full-day tour
will include visits to one-of-a-kind historical schools. Beginning at
8:30 AM the tour will begin with a visit to the Concord School in New
Alexandria, Pa, participants will then travel to visit a one-room city
school in Butler PA. The next stop will be an original condition frame school in
Six Points, PA and then to Mercer County to visit a school that was
turned into a museum the day it closed, Caldwell School. Following
Caldwell School, participants will visit the
oldest continuous use schoolhouse in the country, Zuver School. Zuver
School was purchased by the Amish in 1953 and still serves the
community as a one-room school to this day. On the last leg of the
tour, participants will visit Hickory Corners School located on Slippery
Rock University campus. The final stop will be at the Sample School
upon their return through Cranberry, PA. The tour will enjoy lunch
on-site at Caldwell School and will have dinner upon return. Some of the schools to be visited on the full day tour are pictured below:
