  • Dr. Daniel P. Mertens is an assistant professor of Management in the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government and director of the Saint Vincent College Global Experience Club.

    Dr. Mertens was awarded a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Arizona where he had also earned a Master of Business Administration degree with emphases in Marketing, Finance, and Entrepreneurship.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Colorado State University.  He also received volleyball and soccer scholarships for college.  

    Prior to his graduate study, Dr. Mertens spent three years working as a commercial broker and also worked a year as a banker and financial planner.  

    At Saint Vincent College, Dr. Mertens is teaching classes on Organizational Behavior, Introduction to Management, Organizational Theory, and the business department capstone class, Business Policy and Strategy.  Dr. Mertens won the SGA Faculty Award in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 school years.  He is the first faculty member to win the award consecutively in the school's 160 year history.  

    Dr. Mertens has several publications on assorted management topics and has presented numerous scholarly lectures in the U.S. and Europe.  His research interests include strategic principles, human judgment, individual and organizational decision making,  and organizational behavior.  In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Mertens is a business consultant specializing in strategic planning, strategic implementation, and organization behavior issues.  He enjoys volunteering as a consultant for non-profits.

    His professional affiliations include memberships in the Academy of Management, for whom he serves as a reviewer for both the Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior divisions, as well as the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Society for Judgment and Decision Making.  

    Dr. Mertens is the founder of the Saint Vincent College Global Experience Club.  During the year, Dr. Mertens leads student research on multiple business, cultural, political, and social aspects of a foreign country leading to development of a week-long itinerary.  Every spring break, Dr. Mertens leads the group of students on a study tour of the researched foreign area, where they visit important historical sites, and attend lectures on important business, political, and cultural issues.  The club traveled to London, England in 2004 and Prague, Czech Republic in 2005, and Seville, Spain in 2006.  The destination of the 2007 study tour will be decided by club officers and announced in the Fall. 

    Dr. Mertens serves as the faculty advisor for the school's Certified Emerging Leadership Program, which won the prestigious 2006 NASPA Excellence Gold Award in its first year.

    Dr. Mertens resides in Ligonier with his wife, Tina, who is a trained physician's assistant and their newborn daughter, Annabelle.  The couple enjoys snowboarding, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
