Mathematics professor’s work accepted for publication

Dr. Michael Botsko has had a problem and solution accepted for publication in the refereed journal “Mathematics Magazine.” This work will appear in June 2006 and involves lower semicontinuity, fixed points for noncontinuous functions and compact metric spaces.

Work by three Benedictines featured in “Bible Today”

Three Benedictines are featured in the current issue of "The Bible Today" (January/February 2006). Br. Elliott Maloney, O.S.B. (Seminary and Religious Studies) focused on the prologue of Mark's Gospel in "Jesus at the River Jordan and Markan Symbolism." Fr. Thomas Hart, O.S.B. (Religious Studies) looks at biblical and theological overtones in "The Bible and the Apostles' Creed: 'He Descended into Hell.'" Another monk of Saint Vincent, Fr. Edward Mazich, O.S.B. , working on his doctorate in philosophy at Oxford University, examines some critical texts in "Discipleship and the Cross in the Gospel of Mark."

Special Announcements

GRE Prep Course to be held at SVC starting Feb. 21

The Office of Career Services has arranged for Princeton Review to provide an on-campus course to prepare students to sit for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Feb. 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will run approximately four weeks with a one-week break for spring break. Course dates will include Feb. 21, 23 and 28, and March 2, 14, 16, 21 and 23. Sessions will take place in Alfred 34. There are only eight sessions and a maximum of eight students in the class. Books and 3 CAT exams are provided.

The Oblates of Saint Benedict to meet Feb. 12

The Oblates of Saint Benedict affiliated with Saint Vincent Archabbey will meet at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, in Brownfield Room 202 of Saint Vincent Seminary. The topic of discussion will be “Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading),” based on the Chapter 23 of the book “Benedict’s Way,” with emphasis on encountering God in His word and being gradually transformed to conform to His will.

Palumbo Grant helps with student research into bacterial growth

William “B.J.” Kunkle, Jr. of Latrobe received an A.J. Palumbo Research Grant in April 2005 to perform his senior research titled “The Effects of Calcium Chloride Concentration on the Bacterial Growth of Gram-Negative Escherichia coli MM294 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27853 and Gram-Positive Staphylococcus aureus RN450.” Mr. Kunkle is a senior biology major who hopes to be a pediatrician.

Matthew Sroka, a senior biology major, was awarded an A.J. Palumbo Student Research Grant to fund his senior research project. His research is entitled, “Dental Biofilm Formation in Different Food and Beverage Solutions.”

With the help of an A.J. Palumbo Grant, Nick Budziszewski was able to complete his senior research project entitled, “A Survey of Antibiotic Resistance in Retail Meat.”

David Dempsey, a senior biology major at Saint Vincent College, received an A.J. Palumbo grant to determine the role of telomerase, an “immortalizing” protein.
