A.J. Palumbo Grant used to complete senior research on antibiotic resistance

With the help of an A.J. Palumbo Grant, Nick Budziszewski was able to complete his senior research project entitled, “A Survey of Antibiotic Resistance in Retail Meat.”  He had the following to say about his research which he was able to successfully complete with the help of the grant.

“Antibiotic resistance is a large problem in the world today.  A huge amount of antibiotics are used in agriculture, making meat products a prime target in the study of resistance.  In this experiment, it was hypothesized that the bacteria present in beef, pork, chicken and turkey samples would show general trends in antibiotic resistance, and that these trends would be different depending on the meat used.

“After graduation, I will be going to graduate school in order to obtain a PhD in pharmacology.  A large part of my graduate schooling will involve lab work, so the benefits of having been able to conduct undergraduate research are obvious.  After graduate school, I plans on teaching.”
