4/27: Season ends with loss

College of Notre Dame of Maryland scored the first four goals of the second half to build a 9-4 lead, and the Gators held off a late St. Vincent College charge, for a 11-9 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon at Alumnae Field.

Notre Dame (7-5) scored four times in the first 6:30 of the second half before the Bearcats’ first goal after halftime.

St. Vincent (4-8), however, chipped away at the Gators’ lead, pulling to within two with 4:26 to play on an unassisted goal by junior Shoko Asakura.

The Gators, which overcame 29 turnovers in the game, were able to control the ball late and run out the clock for the win in their final regular-season game.

St. Vincent took a 4-2 lead with 11:58 to play in the first half on Asakura’s first goal of three goals in the game.  Notre Dame’s defense shut the Bearcats out in the final minutes before the break, and the Gators took a 5-4 lead on a free-position goal by senior attacker Jen Leo.

Leo scored the first goal of the second half to continue the Gators 7-0 run that would eventually give them the cushion they needed.

Leo finished with two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Anne Shippen had a game-high four.  Senior center Heather Mullin and sophomore midfielder Tina Money each chipped in with two.

Money’s first goal, with 12:34 remaining in the game, proved to be the game-winner, and her second with 8:05 left was insurance for the Gators.
