Program Goals:

The goal of the program is to provide students with collaborative experiences with current school instructional technologists or librarians, technologies, professional organizations, and curricula to perform as a well-schooled and proficient technology specialist or librarian.  We offer students the necessary training and instruction in new technologies, information and media literacy, budgeting, managing, and media acquisition for K-12 schools and like settings.  We will provide students with knowledge of children's and young adult materials, creative methods for technology or library instruction, and overall media management to foster the best education environment for school students.

Students will have all necessary resources immediately available, including the Saint Vincent College Library, computer labs, Internet and e-mail services, the College Bookstore, and the many technology and curricular resources of the Education Department. Most importantly, students will have academic and research advisors housed on the campus who will be readily available for assistance.

Program Format:

This Educational Media & Technology Master's degree is designed in two tracks.  It is an accelerated 36-credit hours that can be completed in and around 21 months (11 required courses, 1 elective course).  The courses are held all year around in the same 'one night a week for seven weeks' fashion.  Thus students can take two courses a term only driving to campus one evening per week.  At the close of the candidate's degree coursework, a comprehensive exam is required.  The exam is offered every term, which enables candidates to graduate year round.

Getting PA K-12 Library Science Teacher Certification

Candidates may add or become PA certified in Library Science with this program.  If a candidate is not previously certified, some pre-requisite courses and a full 14-week student teaching experience are required.  If a candidate is already certified in another teaching area and selects to add PA teacher certificate in Library Science, completing the program will allow them to do that.  For these candidates the field requirements can be completed off hours, in the summer, and other times when convenient to the candidate.  Candidates may combine the requirements of this course with a current position or employment opportunity.  All candidates pursuing certification must pass the required state praxis exams.  For first time certification your advisor will specify the necessary courses and this is generally not more than 15 credits in addition to your student teaching.  Your undergraduate coursework may exempt you from these courses.
