The Master of Science Degree in Environmental Education at Saint Vincent College focuses on the concepts that encompass our environment and intertwines them with the latest instructional strategies. This program is primarily designed for both non-certified instructors who want additional knowledge in science education and certified teachers who are seeking a second certification. This truly unique program not only offers courses taught by experienced faculty, but also connections with the Saint Vincent Environmental Education Center and ScienceWISE. With these connections, students will be able to directly apply what they learn in the classroom to real "live" teaching situations.

The Environmental Education Master's degree provides an advanced and individualized program of study in Environmental Education designed for both formal and non-formal educators and business professionals. The program will provide opportunities for in-dept study and investigation of recent research, emergent knowledge, and current events concerning environmental issues and policies and educational practices. By using both traditional and non-traditional strategies, and both indoor and outdoor methods, students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the professional world. Perhaps most importantly, the Saint Vincent Environmental Education program will place emphasis on developing environmental education leaders who will be resources to their schools, school districts, and other work sites in developing and implementing environmental curricula to meet the new Pennsylvania Environmental Science and Ecology Standards.
The goal of the program is to assure quality graduate study with stability and permanence that is achieved in a campus-based program so that students will have all necessary resources immediately available, including the Saint Vincent College Library, computer labs, Internet and e-mail services, the College Bookstore, and the many technology and curricular resources of the Education Department. Most importantly, students will have academic and research advisors housed on the campus who will be readily available for assistance.
Program Format:
The Environmental Education Master's degree is designed to be an accelerated 36-credit hours that can be completed in and around 21 months (11 required courses, 1 elective course). Courses are held in the fall, spring, and summer semesters in a 2-session sequence (each session/course is 7 weeks), allowing candidates to complete two courses each term by only attending class one night a week. At the close of the candidate's degree coursework, a comprehensive exam is required. The exam is offered every term, which enables candidates to graduate year round.
