Charles G. “Chuck” Manoli, Sr., professor emeritus of history at Saint Vincent College, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the Saint Vincent College commencement on Saturday, May 7.
With the conclusion of the 2005 spring semester, Mr. Manoli, a Latrobe resident, is bringing to a close a teaching career that spanned more than five decades. In 1997, Mr. Manoli retired from his full-time position as associate professor of history, but since then has served as lecturer in the History Department, teaching one course each semester.
For more than 60 years, Saint Vincent was home to Mr. Manoli. He came to Saint Vincent as a student in the former Preparatory School, then was a student in the College and finally served as a faculty member at both institutions. Upon graduation from the Prep School in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for an eighteen-month tour of duty before returning to enroll at the College where he earned a bachelor of science degree in history in 1951. After teaching in a public school for five years, he returned to Saint Vincent in 1958 where he joined the Prep faculty, and four years later, the College faculty. Modern European History has been his area of concentration and most recently, he has been teaching classes on Europe Between the Wars and the Cold War.
As a faculty member, Mr. Manoli served on a number of academic committees, and as an alumnus, he has been actively involved in both Prep and College alumni affairs and in fund-raising.
During his tenure at Saint Vincent College, he served as chair of the History Department for fourteen years, as president of Alumni Council and twice as Annual Fund chair. Currently, he is a member of the Council of Advisors, Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts.
For his service and dedication, he has been recognized with such awards as the Fr. Camillus Long Alumni Award, the Alumnus of Distinction Award, the Student Government Award and the Boniface Wimmer Faculty Award.
To benefit future students of history at Saint Vincent College, Mr. and Mrs. Manoli have established the Charles G. and Anita L. Manoli Scholarship.
