Maintaining your computer is your responsibility

Maintaining your computer in good working order (free from viruses, spyware, etc.) is your responsibility. Information Services is willing to assist and train you as time permits.

Protect your computer password(s)

Every member of the Saint Vincent community will be issued a network account. To access the privileges associated with the account, the user will need to log in to the system with the Username and Password provided by Information Technology.

You may not download/upload copyrighted materials

The Internet is a great source of information and entertainment. However, just because one can access and gain possession of something owned by someone else, it does not give them the right to have it. Saint Vincent prohibits the downloading or uploading of copyrighted materials without the express consent of the copyright holder.

You May Not Use More Than Your “Fair Share” of Network Bandwidth

Saint Vincent has invested a significant amount of money in its network infrastructure. We provide high bandwidth links to each residence hall and have a network port for each student. We also have a relatively robust connection to the Internet. However, these are still shared resources with limitations. We recognize that individual needs rise and fall, depending upon the work being performed on their computer. However, no student is permitted to use more than their “fair share” of the network, as determined by Information Services.

Using a computer firewall is a requirement

Starting this year, Information Services will be requiring all student computers to install, configure, and operate a firewall whenever they are connected to the Saint Vincent network.

Student computer registration

Every resident student of the Saint Vincent community who plans to use his/her computer(s) in their residence hall room, will be required to register his/her computer(s) via the NetPass computer registration system.

Your computer must not provide network services to other computers

Network access is a privilege to those who maintain and operate their computer in an acceptable manner. One of the requirements is that a student computer may not provide any network services to other computers that are either on or off campus.

We may read your email or network files

Information Services reserves the right to read any and all files and email stored on Saint Vincent servers when in the process of troubleshooting and resolving problems.

Information Services reserves the right to scan any and all devices connected to the Saint Vincent network.

Wireless access points are permitted

Once again, students living in residence halls will be permitted to operate wireless access points (WAPs) in order to provide connectivity to their laptop computer without having to deal with a network cable. As in the past, we require students to bring their WAP to the Help Desk for configuration prior to plugging it in.
