Questions You May Have About Wireless Access Points
Why do we require you to bring the WAP to the Help Desk?
If a WAP is not properly configured, the potential exists for the
wireless user to experience problems getting connected to the
network. Furthermore, it is very possible that the access point
could create problems for other users in the building by offering
bogus/conflicting network addresses. We want to be proactive and
ensure the WAP is correctly configured and the user knows how to
properly connect it to the campus network.
How long will it take to configure the access point?
As we gain experience with additional models, we document the setup to
enable us to perform the procedure more quickly. That being said,
we still require you to leave the access point at the Help Desk – we
cannot configure it while you wait. We will likely notify you
within a few businesss days that it can be picked up. Until
then, you should be able to obtain network access by connecting your
computer to the campus network with a standard Ethernet cable. A
copy of the assigned administrative username and password will be
provided to you when you pick up the access point. NOTE – you
must use the access point as configured by Information Services
whenever it is on campus.
Can I restrict usage to only my computer?
No. You will be required to operate the WAP in a mode that allows
anyone within its range to connect and to use it. It will become
a “public utility” of sorts. Due to limited bandwidth, there are
only so many wireless channels. If we permitted each user to
restrict their access point, the potential would exist that one or more
students would not be able to operate their own access point and they
would then be prohibited for having any wireless service.
When I move out of the residence hall, will I have to bring my WAP back to the Help Desk, again?
No. You should be able to power-up the access point anywhere and
perform a “factory reset” as described in your owner’s manual.
This will remove any changes made by the Help Desk.
Alternatively, as stated above, you will have a copy of the
administrative username and password and can reconfigure the access
point as desired when it is no longer on campus.
What are the consequences if I don’t comply? Your
network privilege will be terminated temporarily or permanently as
determined by Information Services in conjunction with Student Affairs.
