Questions You May Have About “Fair Share”
What’s this all about?
As stated about, the network, although robust, has its
limitations. It is possible for a student to consume enough
bandwidth through activities such as file sharing, gaming, etc. that
they prohibit other residents from enjoying their share of the
network. We also recognize that the need for and use of bandwidth
comes and goes for each of us. We want everyone to have equal
access to the Internet and so we will not permit students to abuse this
privilege by using more than their fair share.
What if you need more bandwidth?
We are now able to refer you to Citizens Cable, if you’re interested in
paying for cable modem Internet service. This service is
completely separate from Saint Vincent’s Internet service and should
provide performance similar to that enjoyed by Citizens’ local
residential customers.
If you choose to go this route, it will complicate matters if you want
to connect to on-campus resources. Your Internet access to campus
resources will be the same as if you were off campus.
NOTE – you are forbidden from connecting simultaneously to both the Citizens’ and Saint Vincent networks.
What are the consequences if I don't comply?
Your network privilege will be terminated temporarily or permanently as
determined by Information Services in conjunction with Student Affairs.
