Questions You May Have About Network Services
What’s this all about?
Most computers are used to provide functionality we commonly think of,
such as word processing, web surfing, and email. However, they
can also be used to provide services to other computers on the
network. Personal computers can be configured to act as a web
server, an email server, a music sharing server, as well as a number of
other varieties. Saint Vincent expressly prohibits students from
providing these types of services on their personal computers.
Why is this such a big deal?
The reality is that some services, such as a web server, may not cause
serious problems. However, other services, such as mail servers,
music sharing servers, and technical things like DHCP servers can
create havoc. At this time, we are aware of no legitimate need
for a student to operate a server in a residence hall. If you
believe you have a reasonable request, contact the Help Desk and
provide the details of what you’d like to do. We’ll give you a
timely response.
How do I make sure I’m not doing the wrong thing?
Most, if not all, personal computers come from the factory with
server-type features turned off. If you don’t turn them on,
you’re likely OK. If you’re not sure if they are turned off
and/or if you suspect something might be wrong, please contact the Help
Desk for advise.
What are the consequences if I don't comply?
Your network privilege will be terminated temporarily or permanently as
determined by Information Services in conjunction with Student
Affairs.
