SVC Men's Basketball

2005-06 Game Recaps

2/21 @ Seton Hill - AMC FIRST ROUND

The Saint Vincent Bearcats came from behind to defeat Seton Hill University on the road in the first round of the American Mideast Conference playoffs by a score of 72-69.

Things looked bleak for the Bearcats in the early portion of the game, as the host Griffins jumped to an 11-0 lead in the first 3:30.  An Ian McCollough three-pointer got SVC on the board and was a sign of things to come.

Seven straight points by McCollough, part of his 15 first-half points, cut the margin to three (20-17) midway through the first period.

SVC later cut the margin to just one, 23-22, after a pair of buckets by Jeff Mallory, but SHU rallied once again and took a 39-32 lead at the half.

The Bearcats kept the margin close throughout much of the second half, but never led until a Tre'sor Kalambay three-pointer from the right corner with 5:27 left on the clock.  The game was tied 66-66 with 4:43 left after a pair of Jeff Street free throws.

Both teams then went cold -- only two free throws from Kalambay went onto the board in the next three minutes.  SHU's Marcus Thompson cut the margin to one, 68-67, with 90 seconds left, but failed to convert on an ensuing layup opportunity with 40 seconds on the clock.

Mallory hit a pair of free throws to give the Bearcats a three-point lead, but a layup by the Griffins' Mateja Dicic made it 70-69, but a couple of late free throws by Billy Bains iced the win for the Bearcats.

Mallory led the Bearcats with 19 points, followed by McCollough (15) and Kalambay (13).  Javille Brooks, Street and Roscoe Biggers each contributed 6.  Mallory topped SVC on the boards with 10, while Brooks grabbed 8.

2/25 @ Mt. Vernon - AMC SECOND ROUND

Despite a 40-footer by Billy Bains that sent the game into overtime, the Saint Vincent Bearcats were unable to upset 15th-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene on the road, falling 103-98 in overtime.

The Bearcats opened the game in fine fashion, opening up a 13-5 lead after a reverse lay-up by Bains at the 14:20 mark.  The Cougars came right back, going on a 14-2 run to take a 19-15 lead at the 11:00 mark.  A bucket by Jeff Street tied the game at 19 midway through the first half, but Mount Vernon then embarked on a 10-2 run that put them in front for much of the remainder of the night.

At the halftime break, MVNU led 38-31, but came out sharp and quickly extended the lead.  At the 15:00 mark, the Bearcats trailed by 18, 55-37, but Ian McCollough rallied SVC with five straight points.  A basket by Street at the 10:40 mark cut the margin to nine (61-52), and the Bearcats continued to slowly claw their way back into the game.

A 14-foot fadeaway by Street at the 3:40 mark brought the visitors back within three (75-72) before the game turned into a free throw shooting contest.

Tre'sor Kalambay hit a three-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining that cut the margin to two (85-83), and the Bearcats managed to foul MVNU's Andrew Thompson with 1.2 ticks left.  Thompson missed one of the free throws, giving the Bearcats one last desperation shot...which Bains canned from 40 feet to send the game to overtime and quiet the Cougar crowd.

The Bearcat celebration was short-lived, however, as Thompson made amends for his miss in regulation by scoring 8 points in the first couple of minutes of OT.  With a 94-90 lead, Mount Vernon's Mark Hess scored to open the gap to six, then made two straight shots from the charity stripe.  The 8-point deficit was too much for the Bearcats to overcome, as Mount Vernon held on for a 103-98 lead.

Jeff Mallory and Jeff Street ended their Bearcat careers with 21 points each on the night.  Kalambay added 19, while Bains tallied 13 and McCollough recorded 11.  Mallory (9), Street (8) and McCollough (7) led the team in rebounds.

Thompson topped all scorers with 23, while Hess grabbed 11 boards.

The teams battled to a tie in rebounds (39) and steals (6), but MVNU held the advantage in a key area...free throws.  They went to the line 38 times, making 27.  SVC hit 20 of 25 freebies.

11/7 @ Penn State-Fayette

The Saint Vincent Bearcats opened the 2005-06 season with an 83-55 victory over host Penn State-Fayette.

Freshman Tre'sor Kalambay led the way with 17 points for the Bearcats.  Ian McCollough added 15, Jeff Mallory had 10, while Javille Brooks, Greg Rosatelli and Billy Bains added 9 points each.

Mallory led the stat sheet in rebounds with 8, while McCollough, Brooks and Jeff Street grabbed 7 boards each.

1/1 @ Urbana

The Saint Vincent Bearcats improved to 8-5 on the season with a six-point victory on the road against Urbana University.

Urbana led by seven early in the game but the Bearcats responded quickly and led much of the remainder of the game.  Urbana rallied late to cut the margin to 55-53 with less than a minute remaining, but Saint Vincent was able to hit their free throws late and preserve the win.

Jeff Mallory led the way for the Bearcats with 21 points and 13 rebounds.  Jeff Street, the reigning Player of the Week in the American Mideast Conference, once again dominated the boards, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with 13 points.

Urbana's Antonio Davis was the game's top scorer with 23 points.

1/19 vs Geneva

Saint Vincent held off a pesky Geneva squad to take home a 63-59 victory for its third straight conference win.

Jeff Street led SVC with 17 points while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Tre'sor Kalambay (12) and Jeff Mallory (11) also scored in double-figures.

The Bearcats led 34-29 at the half, heading into the break with a wave of momentum after Billy Bains picked up a steal and hit a lay-up at the buzzer.

Saint Vincent came out of the gates on fire to begin the second, going on an 11-0 run over the first seven minutes to take the 45-31 lead.

Geneva refused to go away, and pulled to within two with just over a minute to go after a Kyle McDermott bucket.  It was as close as the Golden Tornadoes would get, however, as both Kalambay and Street hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to finish off the scoring and allow the Bearcats to escape with the victory.

Nate Conley led the visitors with 17 points, while McDermott tallied 16.

12/20 @ Wilberforce

Senior Jeff Street and freshman Billy Bains helped the Bearcats get back on track with a 76-73 victory on the road against Wilberforce University in a non-conference matchup.

Street was second-best on the day in points for SVC, scoring 17, but stole the show on the boards, grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds.  Bains led the Bearcats with 21 points. Jeff Mallory added 16 points and six rebounds, while Javille Brooks tallied 11 points and dished out four assists.

The Bearcats trailed by five at the half (38-33) but responded with a strong final 20 minutes.

12/9-10 @ Lou Cunningham Classic

Campbellsville University, a team that sits just outside the top 25 in NAIA Division I, rallied from an 8-point halftime deficit to defeat the Saint Vincent Bearcats by a score of 70-66 in the first day of the Lou Cunningham Classic in Kentucky.

SVC shot well in the opening 20 minutes, converting on 58% of their shots -- including a stellar 8-for-11 from outside the three-point arc -- en route to a 44-36 lead.  However, Campbellsville (9-1) took advantage of fouls and turnovers in the second half to come back and record the victory.

Saint Vincent was led by Jeff Mallory (19 points) and Greg Rosatelli (14).  Jeff Street grabbed 11 rebounds, while Mallory pulled down 10.

CU scored 17 points at the charity stripe compared to just five for the visiting Bearcats.

The Bearcats were defeated 65-44 by Lindsey Wilson College in the final day of the Lou Cunningham Classic.

Jeff Mallory scored 11 to lead the Bearcats, who shot just 26 percent (16-60) for the game, and hit just two of 10 shots from behind the three-point line.  Jeff Street added nine points, while freshman Mike Medved scored a career-high eight in just 7 minutes of playing time. Tre'sor Kalambay was SVC's top rebounder with 9, while Street grabbed 8 boards.

12/5 vs Glenville State

The Bearcats overcame a sluggish start to upend the visiting Pioneers of Glenville State 83-72.

Saint Vincent trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, much in part to the hot shooting of the Pioneers (57 percent in the first half) and forward Raymond McKeithan, who scored 12 on 5-6 shooting.  The Bearcats eventually crept back in, and thanks to a dramatic three-pointer at the buzzer by junior guard Greg Rosatelli, went into the intermission trailing just 38-37.

In the second half, it was all Saint Vincent, as they held the visitors scoreless for the first five minutes and built 48-38 lead with 15 minutes to go when center Jeff Mallory nailed a baseline hook shot over McKeithan, who played much of the second half with four fouls.

The Pioneers cut the deficit to two (63-61) with seven minutes to go, but the Bearcats pulled away and took home the 11-point victory.

Saint Vincent's Jeff Street had a monster night, pouring in 23 points while adding 14 rebounds, which were game-highs as well as career highs for the 6-7 power forward.

Teammate Roscoe Biggers also enjoyed a fine night, dishing out 10 assists while grabbing three rebounds.

Mallory (16) and Ian McCollough (13) also scored in double-digits for the victors, with the former recording six blocks, while the latter was in action for the first time since sustaining a knee injury three weeks ago.

12/3 vs Walsh

The Bearcats fell to the defending national champion Walsh Cavaliers 61-59 in a game that remained undecided until the final buzzer.

Three players scored in double digits for SVC, including center Jeff Mallory, who recorded a game-high 22, forward Jeff Street, who had 14 points and  led both squads with 10 rebounds, and freshman Billy Bains, who netted 12.  Walsh was paced by center Eder Araujo, who scored 19, and Corey Jones, who had 15.

In the first half, it was the Araujo show, as the 6-11 sophomore transfer scored 15, shooting 6-7 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. The Bearcats were able to match Walsh bucket-for-bucket for the duration of the half, however, and shot a blistering 57 percent from the field, despite being out-scored 37-34.

The Bearcats went on a 9-3 run to begin the second half, capped off by a Bains three-pointer from the corner with 16 minutes left.  Araujo answered with two points of his own, but then SVC point guard Greg Rosatelli was able to force a five-second call on Walsh's Jason Hicks, and Mallory cashed in on the turnover to put the Bearcats up by six.

The remainder of the game was a defensive struggle, to say the least, as the team's combined for just 49 points in the second half.  With ten minutes remaining, Cavalier big man Cleiton Sebastio converted on a three-point play to tie the game up at 51, and on their next posession, Jones hit a three to put Walsh up 54-51.

With under three minutes to go, momentum swung the way of Saint Vincent, when Brooks punched the ball away from Araujo, leading to a bucket by Mallory, to cap off an 8-0 run and put the Bearcats up 59-57.

This remained the score until the 55 second mark when Sebastio hit two foul shots to tie it up.  After a Bearcat turnover, Hicks was fouled and hit two free throws to put Walsh up 61-59.  A desperation three by Bains hit the front iron at the buzzer, and Walsh walked away with the victory.

GAME NOTES: The close margin of victory shouldn't be a surprise, as last season, Walsh defeated the Bearcats 66-64 on Dec. 10, and the Bearcats avenged that with a 77-75 victory on Feb. 26th to win the American Mideast Conference...Saint Vincent out-rebounded Walsh 31-27 for the game and 18-11 in the second half...Rosatelli led the Bearcats with six assists, while teammate Roscoe Biggers had four.  Walsh's Brandon Weems led all players with seven helpers...The two teams combined for just 22 turnovers, including a total of just five in the first half...SVC held the Cavaliers to just 35 percent shooting from the field in the second half...After scoring 15 points in the first 20 minutes, Eder Araujo scored just four in the second half for Walsh...The Cavaliers went 13-16 (79 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to Saint Vincent's 12-21 (55 percent)

11/26 vs Penn State-New Kensington

The Bearcats returned to winning form in a big way, defeating Penn State-New Kensington 86-37.

Four players scored in double-figures for SVC, who dominated play from start to finish.  Javille Brooks led all scorers with 18 in only 14 minutes of play, while Jeff Street posted 14, Billy Bains 13, and Tre'sor Kalambay 11.  Bearcat center Jeff Mallory had a monster night on the glass, pulling down 16 rebounds, while Kalambay led all players with five assists. The visitors were led by Rob Cugini, who had 14 points.

The Bearcat defense gave PSNK fits all evening, forcing 13 turnovers and holding the opponents to 28.1 percent shooting for the game.  Conversely, Saint Vincent couldn't miss, shooting 49 percent for the game, and 40 percent from behind the three-point line.  The Bearcats outrebounded the visitors 61-27.

11/19 @ U of Akron

The Bearcats were overwhelmed by the powerful Akron Zips, falling to the NCAA Division-I school 116-65.

SVC started strong, scoring the game's first four points and holding the Zips scoreless for the first three minutes.  The hosts, however, awoke in a big way, rattling off 24 unanswered points in an eight minute span, thanks to its relentless full-court press and some hot shooting, going 10-16 from behind the three-point line in the first half while forcing 18 turnovers.

The Bearcats finally broke the scoreless drought at the 10:25 mark, when freshman Tre’sor Kalambay nailed a three-pointer from the right perimeter for the first of his game-high 27 points.  He also shared the game-high in rebounds with teammate Jeff Street, as each pulled down eight.  The Bearcats, who were outrebounded by 21 in their loss the previous evening at Cedarville, had a strong performance on the glass, grabbing 39 boards as opposed to the Zips 45.

After their 24-point run, the Zips hardly slowed down, thanks much in part to the performance of guard Bubba Walther.  The 6-4 shooting guard connected on six three-pointers in the first half, including three on consecutive possessions, keying runs of 10-0 and 18-7 to take a 56-27 lead into the break.

While the 29-point deficit proved too much to overcome, the Bearcats showed signs of life after the intermission, matching the Zips pretty much bucket-for-bucket for the first part of second half.  SVC junior point-guard Greg Rosatelli scored eight points in just five minutes in the second frame, including a perfect 2-2 showing from behind the arc, and forward Raymar Byrd pulled down six rebounds in eight minutes.

For the Bearcats, Kalambay was joined in double-figures by Street, who scored 10.

11/18 @ Cedarville

The Saint Vincent Bearcats lost their second consecutive game, falling to the powerful Cedarville University Yellow Jackets 82-57.

In the first half, the Bearcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but it was all Cedarville after star forward Mugabe Thomas got the home crowd into the game with an electrifying alley-oop dunk moments in.  This was the start of a 14-point, four minute run for the Jackets, as the hosts got the most out of their up-tempo fast break offense, scoring on six consecutive trips down the court.

The Cedarville lead eventually stretched to 16, but the Bearcats managed to end the first frame on a 5-0 run to make the half time score 40-29. Cedarville shot 47 percent in the first half, and out-rebounded the Bearcats 25-11, including 11-3 on the offensive glass.

The second half was much of the same, as the Bearcats opened the scoring on an 18-foot jumper by Jeff Mallory.  Cedarville stormed back, however, going on a 13-2 run over a four minute span, with Thomas scoring nine. Bearcat shooters were ice cold, shooting 30 percent from the field in the second half, including an 0-9 showing from behind the three-point line.

Thomas, who recorded 25 double-doubles last season, did the same on Friday night, tallying a game-high 30 points and 20 boards.  The Bearcats were led by Mallory, who scored 14, and freshman Tre’sor Kalambay, with nine.

11/8 @ Penn State-New Kensington

The Bearcats won their second game in as many nights, defeating Penn State-New Kensington 79-37 on the road.

It was a balanced scoring effort for the Bearcats, who were led by senior center Jeff Mallory and junior guard Ian McCollough, who both scored 13 points.  Mallory added 10 rebounds.

11/14 vs Saint Francis (IN)

The University of Saint Francis (IN) Cougars rallied in the second half to hand the SVC Bearcats their first loss of the season by a score of 75-67.

It was a see-saw battle early, as the teams traded the lead throughout much of the first half.  Saint Vincent carried a three-point lead into the break, 34-31, despite spending much of the half without leading scorer Jeff Mallory, who sat after picking up two early fouls.

The absence of Mallory gave the Cougars an advantage under the net, as forward Mike Campbell grabbed 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.  Still, the Bearcats managed to lead at the break.

Saint Vincent continued to hold off Saint Francis for the majority of the second half, before USF took the lead, 47-46, with 7:20 remaining.  A three-pointer by Ian McCollough gave SVC a 50-47 advantage with just under 7:00 remaining, but it would be the last lead for the Bearcats.

The Cougars' Trey Eaton hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 50 with 6:28 to go, and that would be the closest SVC would get the remainder of the game.  USF hit plenty of free throws down the stretch -- they were 24 of 35 for the game from the charity stripe -- to pull away to an eight-point final margin.

USF dominated the boards during the game, outrebounding the Bearcats by a 52-39 margin.  Campbell ended the night with 18 caroms.  The Cougars' Mike Steinau led all scorers with 25 points, including a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line.  Eaton added 19 points.  Freshman Tre'sor Kalambay topped the SVC scorers with 14 points, followed by Mallory with 13 in just 22 minutes of play.  Jeff Street was SVC's top rebounder with seven in 19 minutes.

11/11 vs Allegheny

The Bearcats improved to 3-0, defeating visiting Allegheny College 83-71.

Senior center Jeff Mallory was the star of the game, as the seven-footer scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked nine shots, tying the school's single-game record. He was joined in double-figures by junior Ian McCollough, who had 15, freshman Billy Bains with 12, and junior Javille Brooks, who added 10.  All of McCollough's points were scored in the second half, while Brooks contributed with seven rebounds and Bains had five assists and nine boards.

For the duration of the first half, the game was evenly played, but the Bearcats went on a 5-0 run to go into the intermission leading 42-35.  They came out of the gates firing in the second frame, leading by as many as 21 (65-44) midway through.  Allegheny battled back, however, and went on a run of their own, pulling to within eight points (74-66) with three minutes remaining in the game, thanks in part to the hot shooting of Brian Schulz, who hit three three-pointers in the game's final 12 minutes.  The Gators were forced to foul down the stretch, and the Bearcats pulled away, taking home the twelve-point victory.

With his nine blocks, Mallory now joins Daniel Santiago, who has spent time in the NBA, in the Bearcat record books.  Santiago recorded his feat on January 31, 1998 against Daemen.

11/12 vs Penn State-Dubois

The Bearcats overcame a sluggish start to overwhelm visiting Penn State-DuBois 75-46.

For the second consecutive night, senior center Jeff Mallory was the star, scoring 30 points to go with five blocked shots while shooting a stellar 13-15 from the field in just 26 minutes.

The Bearcats played sluggishly at first, and trailed their undersized opponents 16-14 ten minutes into the game.  However, SVC regrouped, ending the half on a 25-5 run to take the 39-21 lead into halftime. The second half was much of the same, as the visitors had no answer for the seven-foot Mallory.  The Bearcats had runs of 12-0 and 10-2, holding Penn State-DuBois to just 25 percent (6-24) shooting during the game's second half, and just 26 percent for the game.

Junior Javille Brooks and freshman Tre'sor Kalambay both had nine points on the evening, while senior forward Jeff Street grabbed nine rebounds and Brooks eight.  Penn State-Dubois was led by Gabe Rosenberg's 13 points and Jake Altemus' 10.

1/7 @ Houghton

The Saint Vincent Bearcats evened their conference record at 1-1 with a victory over Houghton College on the road in New York.  The final score was 88-55.

Freshman Tre'sor Kalambay scored 20 to lead the Bearcats (9-7, 1-1 American Mideast Conference).  Jeff Street added 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Jeff Mallory tallied 11 points and Roscoe Biggers added 9 for Saint Vincent.  The Bearcat bench provided quality minutes, toalling 33 points for the afternoon.

SVC led by 14 at the half, 39-25.

1/6 @ Roberts Wesleyan

The Saint Vincent Bearcats opened the American Mideast Conference portion of the schedule with a 65-63 loss on the road in Rochester, New York to the Roberts Wesleyan College Raiders.

Roberts Wesleyan led by as many as 15 late in the game, but a Bearcat rally -- led by three 3-pointers by junior Ian McCollough -- cut the deficit to just three points (64-61) with 30 seconds left.

The Bearcat defense played tough in the closing seconds, causing a couple of loose balls on the court, but SVC could not gain possession as time ticked away.  A late free throw by the home team made it a four-point game, and a Jeff Mallory dunk at the end was not enough, as Roberts Wesleyan (9-6, 1-2 AMC) held on for a two-point win.

Mallory had a team-high 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Bearcats (8-7, 0-1 AMC).  McCollough added 20.

1/2 @ Georgetown (KY)

The Saint Vincent Bearcats were unable to hold an 8-point halftime lead, falling to Georgetown College on the road in Kentucky by a score of 75-60.

Saint Vincent was led by Jeff Mallory, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Ian McCollough added 12 points, while Jeff Street scored 9.

1/17 vs Point Park

Five players scored in double-figures as the Bearcats picked up a key AMC North victory, defeating the visiting Point Park Pioneers 94-83.

Jeff Mallory led all scorers with 28 points on 12-15 shooting, while pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds and adding four blocked shots.  Ian McCollough (17), Jeff Street (16), Tre'sor Kalambay (11) and Billy Bains (10) all joined Mallory in double-figures, and the Bearcats out-rebounded the Pioneers 40-29.

Play was back-and-forth in the first half, with three ties and three lead changes, with Point Park taking a 40-39 lead with a minute left.  Saint Vincent, however, seized the momentum heading into the intermission, as Kalambay hit a 35-footer at the buzzer to make the score 46-42 in favor of SVC.

The teams continued to share buckets until five minutes into the second when Point Park used a 13-2 run to go up 62-59.  The Bearcats then stormed back, going on a 14-3 run of their own capped off by a Bains lay up off a quick interior pass from Street to put the hosts ahead to stay.

Point Park was led by Gavin Prosser's 23 points, while Chivas Whipple, the AMC's leading scorer heading into the night, tallied 21 to go with 10 rebounds.

1/14 vs Notre Dame

The Saint Vincent Bearcats earned a decisive 96-88 victory over visiting Notre Dame College thanks to strong performances by Jeff Mallory and Marc Duncan.

In a losing effort, however, NDC's Jerome Pierce stole the show, scoring 46 points and setting a conference record with 12 three-point field goals.

The Bearcats got off to a fast start, scoring 9 points before the visitors got on the board.  Notre Dame came to life late in the half, eventually tying the game 34-34 with 5:11 remaining.  The Falcons took the lead for the first time inside the final minute of the first half, and led 43-41 at the break.

Saint Vincent's Jeff Street got the Bearcats rolling with six quick points early in the second half, and he gave the hosts a 49-47 lead at the 17:05 mark.  Pierce, who scored 28 in the first half, scored at the 15:02 mark to tie the game at 53-53, but SVC went on a 10-3 run and never looked back, scoring repeatedly by getting the ball to 7-foot Mallory, who set a career high with 37 points on 14-for-18 shooting from the floor.  Mallory also hit 9 of 11 free throws and had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Duncan, a junior transfer who joined the team in early January, had a career-best 20 points in just 18 minutes of play, shooting 6-for-7 from the floor including 4-of-5 from outside the 3-point arc.  Freshman Tre'sor Kalambay added 17 points for SVC (10-8, 2-2 American Mideast Conference).

Pierce's 46 point output missed the conference standard of 47 set by Saint Vincent's Tony Washam in 2001.  The sophomore was 16 for 25 from the floor, including 12 of 16 from 3-point range.  The former record of 11 three-pointers was co-held by three players.

1/10 @ Seton Hill

The Seton Hill Griffins defeated the Bearcats in the teams' first meeting in the Griffins new facility.  The final score was 65-50.

Seton Hill offered to break open a large lead at several points during the early going, but the Bearcats stormed back to keep the game close.  Seton HIll led by as many as 9 in the closing minutes of the opening half, but Saint Vincent ended the half with a five-point run to make it 32-28 at the break.

The host team came out strong in the second half, outscoring SVC 11-2 in the first three minutes.  A Billly Bains three-pointer later cut the margin to six (52-46) with just over nine minutes remaining,, but SHU responded by scoring the next four points.  After Roscoe Biggers set up Jeff Street to make it 56-48 with a little over seven minutes left, the Bearcats went cold, failing to score over the course of the next five minutes.  Seton Hill's eight-point run make it 64-48, putting the game out of reach.  Both teams struggled with their shooting late in the game, tallying a total of only seven points in the game's final five minutes.

Jeff Street tallied 17 for SVC, while Jeff Mallory added 12 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with five blocked shots.

2/18 @ Point Park

The Saint Vincent Bearcats ended the regular season with a loss to Point Park University by a score of 111-92.  SVC will be on the road Tuesday night at Seton Hill University to open the AMC playoffs.

The Bearcats started the game in fine fashion, opening a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes.  However, Point Park then settled into their game plan -- which included sitting leading scorer Chivas Whipple in favor of an extra big man -- and went on an eight-point run to take a 10-7 lead.  They would hold the lead the remainder of the game.

After taking a 15-point lead into the half (54-39), Point Park continued to expand the margin thanks to sharpshooters Denny DiPasquale and Ryne Liggins.  DiPasquale hit 8-of-10 from outside the arc for the night.

At one point, Point Park's lead reached 31 points before the Bearcats closed the gap in the game's final minutes.

Tre'sor Kalambay topped the scoresheet for SVC with 21 points, followed by Roscoe Biggers with 15 (all from outside the arc).  Jeff Street added 14 points and Ian McCollough scored 12.  Street and Jeff Mallory each recorded 7 rebounds, while Biggers grabbed six.

DiPasquale and Liggins shared game-high honors in points with 26 each, while Chivas contributed 25 off the bench.  Gavin Prosser scored 20, while Mark Ferguson led all rebounders with 12 for the Pioneers.

2/14 @ Geneva

The Saint Vincent Bearcats escaped Beaver Falls with a hard-fought, come-from-behind victory over Geneva College, winning 79-77 in a crucial American Mideast Conference game with playoff implications.

The Bearcat defense came up with a key stop in the game’s closing seconds of the game to hold on for the narrow win.

It was all Geneva in the early part of the game, as the Golden Tornadoes opened up a 15-point lead in the game’s first 12 minutes (33-18).  Two consecutive buckets by Bearcat senior Jeff Street cut the margin to eleven, then four straight points by Marc Duncan cut the gap to seven with six minutes remaining in the first half.

Saint Vincent continued to battle back, cutting the halftime margin to two, 43-41 in favor of the hosts.

Street started the second half on fire, hitting on two consecutive trips down the court, giving SVC their first lead since the game’s opening seconds (45-43).  Both teams played hard, and racked up the fouls.  Geneva was into the bonus less than five minutes into the second half, and the Bearcats soon followed.

Geneva ‘s Christian Hauser hit a jumper at the 9:31 mark that gave the Golden Tornadoes a 63-57 lead, but SVC’s Jeff Mallory hit four free throws in the next couple of minutes and followed with a hook shot that brought the visitors back to life.

From there, it was a classic see-saw battle, with both teams playing tough defense, resulting in a parade of shooters at both free throw lines.

A three-point play by Street put SVC up by three with 1:35 remaining (78-75), and the Bearcats seemed to be in control of the game 35 seconds later, when Geneva was called for a shot clock violation after being unable to penetrate the visitors’ defense.  However, the officials ruled that a Bearcat had briefly gained possession, giving the ball back to Geneva with 58 seconds remaining.

Saint Vincent’s Ian McCollough was called for a foul with 47 ticks left, but Geneva’s Nate Conley only hit one shot, cutting the margin to two.  After a GC stop, the home team got the ball back and a Bearcat foul sent Justin Nardi to the line with a chance to tie the game with 11.1 seconds remaining.  Nardi converted on one shot, and the ensuing Geneva foul sent SVC freshman Tre’sor Kalambay to the line.  He hit one shot with 9.9 remaining to give the Bearcats a 79-77 lead, but Geneva had one last possession.

The Golden Tornadoes were unable to get the ball past three Bearcat defenders, and SVC held on for the 79-77 victory.

Mallory topped all scorers with 26 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.   Street added 17 points, while Billy Bains and McCollough chipped in with 8 each.  Conley paced Geneva with 22 points.

2/11 vs Daemen

The Daemen Wildcats invaded the Carey Center and upended Saint Vincent in a Senior Night matchup.  The final score was 83-68.

Joe Olsen led Daemen with 28 points, picking up the slack when two of the Wildcats' inside players, Ron Wright and Darko Radjenovich, got into foul trouble.  Daemen's leading scorer on the season, Brian Montanaro, was held in check much of the night by the SVC defense, but that freed Olsen, who hit several key shots.

Daemen opened an early 9-0 lead and held a 15-5 lead with 14:42 remaining in the first half.  Saint Vincent responded by shutting down Daemen over the course of the next seven minutes to take an 18-15 lead.  Daemen fought back to take a two-point lead near the end of the half, but a goaltending call at the buzzer put the visitors up 36-32 at the break.

Daemen started the second half strong and never looked back, continuing to build their lead with strong outside shooting.  As a team, the Wildcats shot 65% in the second half.

Jeff Mallory tied Olsen as the game's top scorer, with 28.  Fellow senior Jeff Street added 9 points and 11 rebounds.

2/4 @ Notre Dame

The Bearcats, led by the one-two punch of Jeff Mallory and Jeff Street, defeated Notre Dame 74-63 in an American Mideast Conference North Division matchup.

The game remained close for the first 10 minutes, with the teams tied 23-23 midway through the first half.  Over the next 3 1/2 minutes, however, the Bearcats scored six points and kept Notre Dame off the board, giving the visitors a lead they would never lose.  Saint Vincent eventually took a 37-30 lead into the half.

Still, the Falcons would not go away, keeping the Bearcat lead in check throughout much of the second half.  A steal by NDC's Kenny Burkes led to a jumper by Bryant Austin that cut the margin to three, 66-63, with 1:52 remaining.  The Bearcats, looking to not only extend their three game win streak and end a two-game road losing streak, fought back and ultimately extended the lead to nine before a Mallory dunk at the buzzer pushed the final margin to 11.

Mallory had game-highs in points (29) and rebounds (13).  Street added 20 points and 7 boards.  Ian McCollough and Tre'sor Kalambay each scored 8 for the Bearcats

2/1 vs Seton Hill

The Saint Vincent Bearcats earned a big conference victory over rival Seton Hill University, dominating all facets of the game en route to a 90-72 victory in Latrobe.

Seton Hill scored the first two points of the game, but it would prove to be their only lead of the night.  SVC opened up a 36-24 lead at the half and never slowed down, punishing the visiting Griffins throughout the game.

Jeff Mallory led the way with 25 points and 11 rebounds, and added six blocked shots.  Teammate Jeff Street also had a double-double, contributing 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Saint Vincent owned the boards throughout the night, outrebounding the Griffins 50-19.

Senior center Jeff Mallory, in his first game back after sustaining a head injury against Geneva eight days ago, led all scorers with 23 points.  Classmate Jeff Street had 12 for the Bearcats, and Ian McCollough added 10.  All three pulled down six rebounds apiece, while point guard Roscoe Biggers scored nine points with four steals.

The Bearcat defense was stifling, forcing 20 turnovers, while the offense shot 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc.

The game was tied at five three minutes in, but the Bearcats proceeded to go on a 26-10 run over the next ten minutes to take a 31-15 lead, keyed by a Jonny Hasson three with 4:22 to go.

Saint Vincent went into the intermission riding a wave of momentum, as Roscoe Biggers hit two three pointers in the final 20 seconds.  The score was 41-28 at the half in favor of the Bearcats.

The lead eventually stretched to 23 when Tre'sor Kalambay scored at the 6:25 mark for Saint Vincent.  The Raiders went cold from the floor, making just one field goal between the 9:00 and 5:30 mark, thanks to a relentless full-court press defense deployed by the Bearcats.

1/28 vs Houghton

The Saint Vincent Bearcats downed conference foe Houghton College at the Carey Center by a score of 93-81.

Jeff Street led the way with a career high 28 points for the Bearcats (6-3 AMC, 14-9 overall).

Houghton was able to tie it up at 54 with 12:30 to go, but the Bearcats then went on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes, effectively putting the game away.

The Highlanders were able to stay in the game thanks to its relentless barrage from behind the three-point line, as they connected on 18 treys on 42 attempts, including a 10-18 showing in the second half.

Saint Vincent center Jeff Mallory, in his second game back after sustaining a concussion against Geneva College late last week, scored 16 points while grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds.  Javille Brooks and Mike Medved each chipped in with 10 points, a career high for the latter.

1/21 @ Daemen

The Bearcats dropped an American Mideast Conference matchup to first-place Daemen College, 75-63.

The game started well for the Bearcats (12-9, 4-3 AMC), as three straight buckets by Jeff Street gave Saint Vincent a 14-8 lead.  Later in the half, however, Daemen used an 8-point run to take a 31-24 advantage.  SVC was only able to cut the margin to five, 36-31 at the half, thanks to 17 points in the first 20 minutes by the Wildcats' leading scorer, Brian Montanaro.

Daemen stretched the lead to eight (42-34) at the 16:50 mark of the second half, but the Bearcats responded with an 11-point run over the next three and a half minutes to take a 45-42 lead.  The game remained close until the 8:00 mark.
