3/12: Saint Ambrose ends Bearcat season, 86-80The Saint Vincent Bearcats were unable to hold a halftime lead and lost in the Sweet Sixteen round of the NAIA National Tournament, as Saint Ambrose ousted SVC by a score of 86-80.
Thanks to a strong performance by Kenny Roberts, who finished with 27 points, Saint Vincent built a 12-point lead late in the first half, finally taking a 45-36 edge into the break.
The Fighting Bees hit two three-pointers to start the second half before the Bearcats worked the lead back to eight (60-52) with 12 minutes remaining.
Saint Ambrose then took control building a seven point lead late thanks to strong outside shooting. The Bearcats cut the lead to two in the closing seconds, and appeared to have a chance to tie after a missed shot by Saint Ambrose. However, two Bearcats fought for the rebound, not realizing they were battling each other. The ball fell to the court where it was covered by a Fighting Bee, who alertly called timeout and preserved the possession. SVC was unable to regain control.
Tony Washam scored 20 for SVC, Felix Indaye 12 and Jeff Mallory 11.
Saint Vincent ends the season 25-7.
3/11: Bearcats score 113 in NAIA Tourney winThe Saint Vincent Bearcats became the first team in the NAIA Tournament this season to reach triple digits, downing #12 seed Indiana Tech 113-96 in Point Lookout, MO.
The unseeded Bearcats, competing in the first round of the 32-team national tournament, were able to stick to their game plan and outrun the Warriors, a team that led the nation in steals and featured a tough press defense.
Tony Washam scored 36 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for SVC. His total was the highest by any player in the tournament's first 12 games. Washam was 18-for-20 from the free throw line.
Kenny Roberts pumped in 25, including a 15-for-18 showing at the charity stripe. As a team, Saint Vincent made 43 of 48 free throw attempts.

Saint Vincent led 51-34 at the half, and extended the lead to 30 at one point in the second half, 80-50. A relaxed defense by the Bearcats late in the game allowed Indiana Tech to cut the margin to eight with 51 seconds left, but SVC hit several key free throws to put the game out of reach.
Saint Vincent will move to the Sweet 16 round tomorrow (Friday), taking on #5 seed Saint Ambrose (Iowa) at 3:15 Eastern Time. Saint Ambrose defeated Sterling (Kansas) 63-62.
2/28: Storybook ending lifts Bearcats to victoryIt was the kind of game that forces the use of a cliche...those that watched it have a story to tell their grandchildren.
The Saint Vincent Bearcats played 40 minutes and never led. It took overtime for the Bearcats to overtake Ohio Dominican and win the AMC Tournament, 100-91.
Kenny Roberts hit a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, 84-84, and send it to overtime. Roberts' shot was the culmination of a Bearcat comeback, which saw them erase a 12-point deficit in the final four minutes. The Panthers led 78-66 before Tony Washam went on a tear, scoring 11 consecutive points for the Bearcats. A stifling SVC press defense caused repeated miscues by ODU as SVC continued to edge closer.
After Roberts' dramatic buzzer-beater, Ohio Dominican drew first blood in overtime, thanks to two Donta Patterson free throws. Saint Vincent's Felix Indaye hit a three-pointer with 3:45 remaining in OT for his first points of the game, and The Bearcats' first lead, 87-86. After a Haze Massey trey for ODU, Saint Vincent freshman Ian McCollough became the hero, tipping in three missed shots in the final two minutes of overtime to life the Bearcats. His third tip-in, with less than a minute remaining in OT, gave Saint Vincent a 96-91 lead. A couple of free throws at the end put the Bearcats at the century mark for a 100-91 victory.
Tony Washam, who earlier in the week had a cast removed from his broken shooting hand, led all scorers with 37 points, despite having just 8 points in the first half. Roberts added 29 and McCollough 15, while Marcus Fisher scored 10 for the Bearcats.
Washam was the game's leading rebounder, pulling down 17 boards in 43 minutes of play. He also added six steals, and hit 11 of 15 free throw attempts. McCollough added 8 boards.
2/27: Saint Vincent defeats Geneva, advances to AMC FinalKenny Roberts hit on all cylinders, pumping in 28 points for Saint Vincent as they advanced to the AMC Tournament final by defeating Geneva, 71-68.
Geneva got off to a fast start, taking a 15-6 lead six minutes into the game. The Bearcats then recovered to take an 18-17 lead when Tony Washam scored on an acrobatic underhanded reverse layup with 8:30 remaning in the half. However, a few seconds later he picked up his third foul and went to the bench for the remainder of the first half.
Without Washam, Saint Vincent fell behind 28-21 before two blocked shots, one by Ian McCollough and one by Jeff Mallory, brought the crowd into the game for Saint Vincent. Roberts then took command, scoring 11 points in the final 2:26 of the first half. Saint Vincent took a 37-31 lead into the break.
In the second half, SVC extended the lead to eleven, 50-39, before a Terrance Ward three-pointer with 12:33 remaining gave Geneva renewed life. It began a 13-2 run that tied the game at 52 with 7:41 remaining. After a Bearcat free throw made it 53-52, Stefan Grundberg hit a trey for the Golden Tornadoes that gave them a 55-53 lead with 6:48 left in the game.
Saint Vincent's Roberts hit a three-pointer 24 seconds later to put the Bearcats ahead to stay.
Geneva's Chad Mraz came alive late in the game, hitting seven consecutive points to make it a two-point game, 70-68, with 46.4 seconds remaining. After a Saint Vincent missed free throw, Geneva had an opportunity to tie the game with a couple of free throws with 13.7 seconds left, but Jeremiah Carlson was unable to convert. Saint Vincent's Tony Washam hit a free throw with 12.4 remaining on the clock, and a last second free throw attempt by Grundberg missed, giving SVC a 71-68 victory.
Tony Washam scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Saint Vincent. Jeff Mallory added 10 points and 9 boards.

Washam scored 27 points off the bench, playing 33 minutes in his first game in five weeks after breaking his hand January 20. Washam added 5 rebounds and two steals.
Marcus Fisher was another Bearcat sharpshooter, hitting four-of-six outside the arc as part of his 16 points. Jeff Mallory added 12 for the Bearcats, who trailed much of the game.
The Bearcats took their first lead of the night midway through the first half, 20-19, but the lead was short-lived. Shawnee took a 35-32 lead into the half, and continued to lead through much of the second half.
In the closing minutes, Shawnee led 68-65, but Saint Vincent, led by a determined Washam, scored the final six points of the game to pull out the victory and advance to the semifinals.
2/21: Big win for SVC over Point ParkThe Saint Vincent Bearcats ended the regular season with a victory over conference rival Point Park on the road in West Mifflin, 77-68.
The game had one of the strangest starts to a contest that you will ever see. Point Park was ice cold from the start, and their poor shooting combined with solid Bearcat defense put the Bearcats on a 16-0 tear to begin the game. Point Park did not score a point in the first 8:29 of the game.
The Bearcats built a 30-13 lead before the Pioneers went on an 8-point run to cut the margin to nine. The Bearcats held that advantage at the break, 35-26.
Saint Vincent extended the lead to 14 early in the second half (42-28) but the Pioneers again fought back, using an 18-5 run to cut the lead to just one, 47-46 near the midway mark of the second half.
Clutch shooting by the Bearcats kept Point Park from taking the lead, and Saint Vincent was able to work the lead back to nine, 63-54. Point Park again fought back and kept the game close. One of the key plays came with the score 64-60, Saint Vincent, with less than 3:20 remaining. The Pioneers went to a press defense, but the Bearcats were able to work the ball downcourt. Ian McCollough found Jeff Mallory streaking through the lane and timed the pass perfectly, allowing Mallory to throw down a powerful dunk that deflated the Point Park crowd and extended the lead to six. Point Park never seemed to recover, and the parade of foul shots in the closing minutes allowed the Bearcats to pull away for a 77-68 victory.
Kenny Roberts had a game-high 23 points for Saint Vincent, while Mallory recorded 21 before fouling out late in the game. Felix Indaye added 13, McCollough and Marcus Fisher 9 each. McCollough was the game's high rebounder with 11.
The Bearcats finish the regular season 21-6, 8-6 in the AMC North. The victory over Point Park lands the Bearcats in third place in the division behind Daemen and Seton Hill. Saint Vincent will host either Ohio Dominican or Shawnee State on Tuesday night in the Carey Center, game time to be determined.
2/18: Bearcat comeback downs pesky LionsThe Saint Vincent Bearcats overcame a halftime deficit to defeat a determined Penn State New Kensington Lion squad on the road Wednesday night, in a non-conference game, 63-52.
SVC trailed by as many as seven midway through the first half, eventually cutting the deficit to three at the half, 35-32.
Saint Vincent tied the game with a Jeff Mallory hook shot at the 13:33 mark in the second half, and it was the start of an 18-1 run over the next six minutes that put the Bearcats ahead to stay.
Saint Vincent (20-6) was led by freshman Ian McCollough, who scored 17. Jeff Mallory added 13, while Kenny Roberts scored 11. Sophomore Jonny Hasson had 9 key points off the bench, all in the second half.
2/14: Bearcats lose to Daemen by 7For the second straight game, the Saint Vincent men were unable to hold a 6-point halftime lead and lost a key conference matchup. Daemen College, the first place team in the AMC, defeated the Bearcats 64-57.
SVC led 31-25 at the end of the first half and led by seven with 15:01 remaining in the game, but the team shot just 35% from the floor in the second half and watched Daemen go on a 19-2 run midway through the period. Daemen led by 10 with a minute remaining, but the Bearcats were able to close the gap to five with less than 40 seconds remaining. However, SVC missed a couple of opportunities in the closing seconds and Daemen extended the lead at the foul line.
Kenny Roberts led all scorers with 23. Jeff Mallory had a double-double for SVC, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds, before fouling out with 4:44 remaining.
2/11: SVC falls to GenevaThe SVC men carried a six-point lead into the half, 29-23, but watched as Geneva scored 50 second half points to down the Bearcats 73-56.

Kenny Roberts, a junior from Falling Waters, WV, scored the final two of his team-high 15 points with 10:35 remaining in the second half. The basket brought his career total to 1000 points, making him the 25th player in the history of the men's program to reach the plateau.
Ian McCollough and Marcus Fisher each scored 14 points, while Jeff Mallory added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Felix Indaye added 9 for SVC. The Bearcats, who must face conference foe Roberts Wesleyan on the road Thursday night, gave younger players an opportunity to see some time as well, as none of the starters played more than 23 minutes.
2/2: Bearcats hold off Allegheny, 70-66The Saint Vincent Bearcats were once again able to hold off a determined underdog, as they pulled out a victory over NCAA Division III Allegheny College, 70-66, on Monday night at the Carey Center.
Allegheny came out aggressive and determined, drawing the Bearcats into a high-tempo game that led to an early 8-5 lead over SVC. A Felix Indaye three gave the Bearcats their first lead at 13-10. But the outstanding play of senior forward Matt Magnusen kept Allegheny right in the game throughout the first half. A Magnusen three would give Allegheny an 22-18 advantage, until Saint Vincent rallied back and went into the break with a 33-30 edge after a Kenny Roberts basket.
Allegheny charged out of the locker room and went on a spurt, scoring 9 unanswered points, taking advantage of lackluster Bearcat play, after baskets by Magnusen and a three by senior point guard Joe Turner, giving them a 39-33 lead. Then came the intimidating presence of Bearcat Jeff Mallory in the paint, who would block three consecutive shots, all leading to Robertsí steals and baskets, giving SVC a slim 48-47 edge. A Mallory put back shot would give the Bearcats a comfortable 58-51 advantage.
Allegheny senior guard J.J. Wilson narrowed the margin to 58-54 converting from beyond the arc. Roberts answered Wilsonís basket with a three of his own, only to Magnusen cash in from the three-point stripe keeping Allegheny in the contest at 61-57. Another Magnusen three would pull Allegheny to within three at 63-60. After a Mallory pull-up jumper, Alleghenyís Turner nailed a clutch three, with 35 seconds remaining on the board, to pull them within one a t 67-66. Then Allegheny decided to begin to foul the Bearcats, which turned out to be a bad idea, as both Indaye and Roberts converted both of their shots from the charity stripe, ending the Allegheny charge.
Roberts led SVC with 26 points, followed by Mallory with 16. Ian McCollough added 13 and Felix Indaye scored 10 for SVC. Mallory recorded 6 blocks on the night.
1/31: Fisher leads Bearcats to win over GriffinsJunior guard Marcus Fisher had a career high 20 points to lead the Saint Vincent Bearcats to an 80-64 victory over Seton Hill University in a battle for second place in the American Mideast Conference.
Fisher was 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line for SVC. Joining him in double-digits was junior Kenny Roberts, whose key three-pointer at the end of the first half gave SVC a 34-30 lead at the break, after a see-saw first half battle.
Fisher and freshman Ian McCollough stepped up in the second half. McCollough ended the game with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Felix Indaye and Jeff Mallory each added 9 points, while Rob Husar contributed 7 for Saint Vincent. Husar, starting in place of All-American Tony Washam, who remains sidelined with a broken hand, had four rebounds and two key steals to aid the Bearcats.
SVC started to open up the game five minutes into the second half, when they ran the lead to eight at 44-36, then went on a six-point run to increase the lead to 14. Seton Hill eventually cut the margin to eight (68-60), but would never again seriously challenge as the Bearcats drew away to a 16-point win.
1/27: NDC turns the table, upsets Bearcat menJust seven days after the Bearcats erased an 11-point deficit in the closing minutes to defeat Notre Dame College, the Falcons took a page from the Bearcats' playbook to score an upset victory, 56-55.
Saint Vincent led by as many as 17 in the AMC divisional game at South Euclid, Ohio, but a defense that held the Bearcats to just 22 second half points brought Notre Dame back into the game.
SVC opened the game with a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 33-16 lead late in the first half, but the momentum shifted in the final two minutes of the half, as NDC went on an 8-point run to make it 33-24 at the half.
The Falcons then scored the first 8 points of the second half to cut the Bearcat lead to one at 33-32 before the visitors once again found their offense.
SVC ran the lead to eight at 45-37, but could not put away the determined Falcon team. Notre Dame eventually took the lead inside the final four minutes at 52-50, but Saint Vincent battled back to take a 55-54 lead into the closing seconds.
With 1.9 seconds remaining on the clock, Paul Benjamin of Notre Dame grabbed a rebound and tossed a wild shot from the baseline at about 15 feet. It appeared to be a nearly impossible angle, given the fact that he was slightly behind the backboard and was falling backward out of bounds. Nonetheless, Benjamin's shot was good, and the Bearcats were sent to their second straight defeat since losing All-American guard Tony Washam to a broken hand.
Center Jeff Mallory led the Bearcats with 15 points, followed by Felix Indaye with 12 and Kenny Roberts with 10.
1/24: SVC drops inaugural game against Seton HillThe Saint Vincent men's team, forced to play its first game without All-American Tony Washam, lost to a determined Seton Hill squad, 77-68. The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, with Seton Hill moving to a 6-point lead midway through the first 20 minutes, only to have SVC storm back and take a 33-31 lead with two minutes remaining in the opening half. Seton Hill got a couple of key three-pointers to take a 37-33 lead into the break, but Saint Vincent came back and led by as many as five before Seton Hill mounted their comeback. Seton Hill took the lead for good inside the final 8 minutes, but the Bearcats kept it close, moving to within one point at 65-64 late in the game. Naor Amiel hit 7 of 9 free throws late to boost Seton Hill to the victory.
Mallory had a career high 27 for Saint Vincent, while Roberts added 24 points.
1/20: Bearcats rebound from 16 point deficit, win 72-69The #3 ranked Saint Vincent Bearcats showed heart and determination by pulling out a victory over Notre Dame College after trailing much of the contest.
Saint Vincent was down 43-29 at the half, after losing All-American guard Tony Washam early in the game with a hand/wrist injury. Felix Indaye helped to pick up the slack, hitting several key shots, but the Bearcats could not match the inside game of Notre Dame. Post players Paul Benjamin and Will Bruce for the Falcons combined for 25 first half points and a dozen rebounds.
Things weren't getting much better in the second half for Saint Vincent, as Notre Dame (7-15) ran the lead to 16 with 9:38 remaining. To the roar of the crowd, Washam then returned to the court with his hand taped after missing much of the game, adding a spark to the Bearcat offense.
The lead was 12 points with just 2:15 remaining, at 67-55, until Marcus Fisher (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to nine.
The Bearcats started fouling Falcon players, who went ice cold at the charity stripe. SVC freshman guard Ian McCollough then started on his heroic path to bring the team back into the game. He hit a three-pointer with 1:36 left on the clock to cut the ND lead to six.
After a Benjamin jumper, Notre Dame had an 8 point advantage as the clock ticked under one minute. McCollough then took command, hitting a three-pointer and drawing a foul with 52 seconds remaining. After completing the four-point play to make the score 69-64, McCollough then stole the ball on the inbound pass and hit another three-pointer to make the score 69-67 with 38 seconds remaining.
The ensuing inbound pass was stolen by Fisher, and the Bearcats drew a foul that sent Washam to the line with 26 seconds on the clock. He missed both shots but grabbed his own rebound on the second shot and hit a jumper to tie the game at 69.
After another Falcon miscue, Washam ended up with the ball and a foul. This time he hit both free throws to give the Bearcats the lead, 71-69 with just 21 seconds remaining.
Notre Dame once again struggled in their attempt to get the ball downcourt and shoot, with Washam getting the ball and drawing another foul with 17 second remaining. He hit one shot to make it 72-69, but Notre Dame called their final timeout and had 14 seconds to make a final attempt to tie.

Saint Vincent then went on a 6-point run, but Urbana refused to quit, closing the gap to 58-57. The Bearcat defense then took over, blocking several shots and creating turnovers. The Bearcatís strong early play led to coach D.P. Harris giving his starters, including Washam who had 23 points at the half, a rest in the second half. This provided an opportunity for some of the reserves to get quality minutes, and sophomore guard Jonny Hasson seized that opportunity cashing in for 19 points, a career high. Hasson was 8-for-9 from the floor. Jeff Mallory added 12 points, Kenny Roberts had 9, and freshman Greg Rosatelli added 8 for the Bearcats.
