The Bearcats opened the 2007 season with a 4-1 loss to Baldwin-Wallace (OH) in the opening round of the Penn State-Behrend tournament. Ben Fecik set up Dave Lauteri's goal in the first half, giving SVC a 1-0 lead. B-W, however, countered with a pair of goals to make it 2-1 at the half, then added two late goals for the final tally.

The Bearcats earned their first win of the season in a big way, defeating D'Youville 6-1 at the season opening Penn State-Behrend tournament in Erie. Eight different players recorded at least one point for the Bearcats, led by sophomore Jim Vargo's two goals. Coach Keith Harmon's offense was clicking on all cylinders, as the Bearcats outshot D'Youville a staggering 41-5, putting 25 shots on goal.
SVC's first goal of the afternoon came 11 minutes into the contest, with Sean Molyneaux scoring unassisted. Jason Zielinski scored off of an assist from Molyneaux at the 23-minute mark of the first half, and the score remained 2-0 heading into the intermission.
Luis Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half before D'Youville found the scoreboard with 27 minutes remaining.
Vargo then scored the first goal of his career, off of an assist from Mark Mastriano, to put the Bearcats up 4-1 at the 64-minute mark. Freshman Alex Lardin scored SVC's fifth goal of the day just two minutes later, assisted by John Woodruff. Vargo finished the day's scoring with just over a minute remaining in regulation, with an asisst credited to Dave Lauteri.
The Saint Vincent defense did a commendable job on the day, as keeper Brandon Bower only faced three shots.

Thanks to two second half goals from John Woodruff, the Bearcats came from behind to earn a hard-fought 2-2 tie with visiting Seton Hill. In a physical first half, neither team could find the scoreboard, and it was back and fourth throught the majority of the second half, as well. Seton Hill got on the board first with just under 30 minutes remaining in regulation on a blast by Doug Schmitt.
The Bearcat offense then put the pressure on Seton Hill, but couldn't find the scoreboard until the 76-minute mark. A blast by Dave Lauteri was stopped by Griffin keeper Parker Laabs, but the ball glanced off his hands to the awaiting foot of Woodruff, who knocked it in the net. Seton Hill stormed right back, with Garret Fishaw finding the net with just 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Griffins then went on the defensive, and the Bearcats continued to press. The pressure paid off with 52 seconds left, as Woodruff earned his second goal of the day with a header off of a deflection to send the game into overtime. Seton Hill had the momentun heading into the first extra period, and nearly won it when Fishaw knocked the ball toward what appeared to be an open net, until SVC defender Matt Fecik slid from out of nowhere to knock the ball to safety.
The Bearcats also had their share of scoring opportunities, including a rocket from Lauteri that went just wide in the second extra session, but couldn't find the net.

Elizabethtown shut down the Bearcat offense in the first day of the Elizabethtown Tournament. After a scoreless first half, Elizabethtown scored four times in the second half to secure a 4-0 victory. The Bearcats played hard in the second half, but Elizabethtown was able to bring in fresh players off the bench, while SVC's could not match their manpower. On day two, Franklin & Marshall, ranked #17 in the nation, dominated a depleted SVC roster. Goalkeeper Brandon Bower was injured in the Elizabethtown loss and did not play, forcing freshman Alex Lardin -- a field player -- to make his debut in goal. SVC also lost a player to a red card and played shorthanded in the second half.

The Bearcats snapped a three game winless streak with a 3-2 victory at the
University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg.
Early on, it looked as if the
Bearcats would make short work of their neighbor school, seizing the early
momentum after Jason Zielinski scored SVC's first goal off of a Sean Molyneaux
assist just 1:08 into play.
Pitt-Greensburg responded well, owning the
time of possession for the next several minutes. SVC goalie Phil Pasterick,
making the first start of his college career, preserved the Bearcat lead early
on, making a number of key saves, including stopping a UPG blast from five yards
out 18 minutes in.
The scoring chances then went the way of the Bearcats,
but UPG keeper CJ Stangl was up to the task early, robbing Zielinski and Dave
Lauteri on back to back blasts midway through the first frame.
With 12 minutes left in the first half, Zielinski was alone on a breakaway
when he was pulled down from behind at the top of the 18-yard line. SVC was
awarded a penalty kick, with Luis Rodriguez burying it into the lower right
corner of the net to give the Bearcats a 2-0 advantage.
UPG answered right back, scoring on a perfectly placed free kick from 30
yards out that floated just over the outstretched arms of Pasterick with five
minutes remaining in half.
The back and forth play continued, with the Bobcats continuing to pressure
the SVC defense. UPG was finally able to tie it with 20 minutes left, with a
hard shot from the right edge of the 18-yard box that eluded a diving
Pasterick.
SVC finally snapped the tie at the 80 minute mark, with Rodriguez
scoring his second goal of the day off of a give-and-go pass from Zielinski down
the right flank for the game-winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Phil Pasterick earned a shutout, and junior Dave
Lauteri scored a pair of goals as SVC defeated Pitt-Bradford on the
road by a score of 4-0. Lauteri started the scoring off an assist from Luis Rodriguez, then got help from Sean Molyneaux on his second goal of the day. Rodriguez
added a goal off a Jason Zielinski assist to make it 3-0, then Matt
Fecik headed in a corner kick from Zielinski to close the scoring. Pasterick improved to 2-0 in the net, and SVC is now 3-3-1 on the season.

The visiting Senators of Davis & Elkins College scored the only goal of
the game with two minutes left in regulation, defeating the Bearcats 1-0.
Saint Vincent's defense played well throughout the entire contest, led by
goalie Brandon Bower. Bower, making his return to the lineup after missing a
pair of games due to a knee injury, made 13 saves, keeping a clean sheet for
86:53.
Davis & Elkins came out of the gates strong, constantly
attacking the Bearcats over the first 20 minutes of the first half. Over that
span, the Senators recorded 10 shots, three on goal, and took three corners.
As was the story throughout, the Bearcats dodged the early D&E rally and
answered back, controlling play for the remainder of the first half. In the
final 22 minutes of the first stanza, SVC managed seven shots, four on goal, but
were unable to score the first goal of the game.
Play went back and forth
in the opening minutes of the second half, but defense continued to be the theme
of the game. The Senators slowly gained momentum as the half wound on, and
Bower preserved the shut out with three big saves in a six-minute span midway
through the half.
The Bearcats looked as though they took the lead in the game's 82nd minute,
with Luis Rodriguez finding Dave Lauteri over the middle of the field. Lauteri
got past the defender and buried the shot into the top of the net, but the goal
was nullified after the play was called off sides.
This brought Davis & Elkins to life, as the team gained control of the
ball for the next several moments. With four minutes to go, the Bearcats
successfully defended a D&E corner kick, but the Senators' Makesi Bostic
picked up the deflected ball and booted past Bower for the game-winner from 30
feet out at the 86:53 mark.

Sophomore Luis Rodriguez scored three goals as SVC defeated visiting Franciscan University by a score of 4-1. Just
over six minutes into the game, Rodriguez was pulled down inside the
box and planted the resulting penalty kick into the lower left corner
of the net to give SVC a 1-0 lead. Nineteen minutes later, Sean Molyneaux found the same corner of the net off a pass from Dave Lauteri to make it 2-0. With
less than five minutes remaining in the first half, Molyneaux connected
with Rodriguez in the box, and Luis worked his way past the Franciscan
keeper to tally an easy goal, making it 3-0. After a Baron goal
in the 66th minute made it 3-1, Rodriguez netted his third of the day
in similar fashion to his second. He took a pass from Jason Zielinski,
worked his way past the keeper and tapped in a goal in the 87th minute
to seal the win. Brandon Bower earned the victory in the net, with 11 saves.

Frostburg State scored two late goals in the final four minutes of the game, defeating Saint Vincent 3-1. The
visiting Bobcats started the day's scoring early, as Adam Gracia scored
the game's first goal just 24 seconds into the first half, with an
assist credited to Gregg Laskow. Saint Vincent responded nicely,
however, allowing just one shot on goal for the remainder of the first
frame. The Bearcats tied it up in the game's 27th minute, when Dave
Lauteri drilled home a rebound from six yards out for his fourth goal
of the year. The Bearcats were able to dodge Frostburg State's
last scoring threat of the half, when a blast from FSU's Mike Bowers
hit the crossbar in the 38th minute.
SVC controlled play for
much of the second half, and saw a number of opportunities to take the
lead in the opening minutes of the final frame. Jason Zielinski had
two point blank scoring opportunities for the Bearcats, but one hit the
post and the second was stopped by FSU keeper Dante Dozier.
Bearcat
goalie Brandon Bower was also up to the task in the net, making a pair
of key stops in an eight minute span and preserving the tie.
As
time wound down, it appeared as if the game would be heading for
overtime, but FSU's Kenny Dotter broke past the Bearcat defense to
score the eventual game-winner with 5:05 remaining in regulation.
Laskow
ended the day's scoring with 1:30 left to play, sending a rocket from
15 yards out into the lower corner of the net to give the Bobcats the
insurance goal.

The Bearcats were unable to hand Messiah College its first defeat of
the 2007 season, falling to the defending national champions 3-0.
The
game was scoreless through the first 21 hard-fought minutes of play,
until Messiah scored a debated goal. The Bearcats contended that the
ball had crossed the end line before it was crossed into the box prior
to the scoring shot, but the referees ruled it had stayed in bounds and
awarded the goal. Messiah, one of the top teams in the nation
again this year, then used its depth to keep the Bearcats on the
defensive much of the second half, and eventually added two late goals
to seal the win.

The Bearcats snapped a two-game winless streak, traveling to Westminster and tying the Titans 3-3. Sean Molyneaux started the scoring, taking a pass from Ben Fecik and giving SVC a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. The lead held until late in the first half, when Westminster scored twice within three minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the half. SVC tied the game just 4 minutes into the second frame, with Fecik scoring off a cross from Dave Lauteri. Eleven minutes later, Jason Zielinski scored on a breakaway to give the visiting Bearcats a 3-2 lead. However, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for Westminster against Bearcat keeper Phil Pasterick with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, and the resulting score tied the game at three. Neither team scored in two 10-minute overtime periods. Statistically, the game was close. Westminster outshot SVC 26-22. Both teams' goalkeepers posted 13 saves. For SVC, starting keeper Brandon Bower recorded 8 saves in the first half, while Pasterick saved 5 shots in the final 65 minutes of play.

The Bearcats were defeated 3-2 in overtime by visiting Washington & Jefferson. W&J got on the scoreboard first, with Jeremy Delmaster knocking in a long throw-in from the corner by Mike Pappas 15 minutes into the first half.
SVC evened it up when Luis Rodriguez scored his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Jason Zielinski, on a give-and-go in front of the net in the 38th minute. The score remained knotted at one until Rodriguez scored his second goal of the day in the 78th minute. W&J keeper Tyler Hodgins ranged far out of the net to deflect a shot by Dave Lauteri, with the rebound bouncing right to Rodriguez who sent a rocket into the top right corner of the net to put SVC up 2-1. W&J answered right back, with Mark Clayton getting behind the defense and scoring the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute. At the end of regulation, the game remained tied at two, forcing overtime. Just 30 seconds into the extra session, Josh Nixon scored off of a bouncing ball in the box from Dave Hart to give the Presidents the 3-2 win.

The Bearcat men tied the Grove City Wolverines on the road, 1-1 in double overtime. The teams played evenly until the 27th minute, when Grove City's Matt Sol put the hosts on top 1-0. The game remained tied until the 83rd minute, when SVC's Ibra Fancher sent a long pass from the defensive end across the field to Luis Rodriguez, who made a run past defenders and scored to tie the game. Thanks to strong defense by keeper Brandon Bower, who made 13 saves, the teams continued to battle through two scoreless overtime periods.

Thanks to a Jason Zielinski goal in the 85th minute, the Bearcats were able to defeat visiting Geneva 2-1. The game's first half was very fast-paced and evenly played, with much of the action taking place around midfield. Each team managed four shots on goal over the first 45 minutes, but neither could find the net. The second half featured much of the same, although the game took a physical tone, as the teams combined for 27 fouls and four yellow cards over the final 45 minutes. SVC had a prime chance to tie it in the 64th minute, when Sean Molyneaux took the Geneva defense by surprise with a blast from 18 yards out. Golden Tornado keeper Sam McCracken was able to corral the blast, and preserve the scoreless tie. Just moments later, it appeared as if Geneva scored the contest's first goal, as they had a three-man break deep into SVC territory and were able to knock the ball into the net. The play was immediately whistles offside, and the deadlock continued. With nine minutes left in the second half, SVC's Dave Lauteri sent a ball into the box, and teammate Ben Fecik was able to send a diving header into the net and give the Bearcats the 1-0 advantage at the 81:30 mark. Just 50 seconds later, Geneva once again had it deep in SVC territory, and after a scrum in front of the net, Bearcat goalie Brandon Bower was whistled for a questionable foul after attempting to pounce on a loose ball. Geneva was awarded a penalty kick, and Kenton Burkhart converted it to tie the game at one. The Bearcats then went on the attack, and a Geneva foul with five minutes left in regulation gave SVC a free kick from 30 yards out. Fecik sent the high, arching ball into the middle of the box, and it found the forehead of Zielinski, who directed it into the net for the game winner. Geneva mounted one final push, but the Bearcats were able to control the ball for the final moments to earn the win.

It took 92 minutes, but the Bearcats defeated visiting Thomas More College 2-1. Ben Fecik's goal two minutes into overtime was the difference, as SVC was able to win its second straight. Thomas More got on the board early, when Aaron Osborne scored following an indirect kick seven minutes into the first half. The play was then even for the next 20 minutes, when SVC cashed in on picture-perfect passing, with Jason Zielinski connecting with Ben Fecik, who fed Luis Rodriguez in front of the net. The sophomore then scored 11th goal of the season to tie it up at one. As time wound down in the opening frame, the Bearcats managed a pair of shots on goal, one by Zielinski and one by Sean Molyneaux, but both were saved, and the half ended tied at one. The Bearcats owned play for much of the second half, managing seven shots on goal, but all were stopped. The Saints managed 11 total shots in the second half, but only two found their way to the goal, and Bearcat goalie Brandon Bower turned them both aside. He also was solid on corner kicks, twice leaping out of the net to snag the ball to quell Thomas More scoring threats. Saint Vincent came out strong to start the overtime period. Just over a minute into the extra session, Rodriguez controlled the ball for an extended period of time, dribbling around a number of defenders at the top of the box. He then found Fecik with a pass, and the sophomore blasted the game winner into the net from 15 yards out. Both goalies played well, with Bower making eight stops and TMC's Matt Koopman saving seven.

The visiting Carngie Mellon Tartans defeated the Bearcats 2-0 on a rain-soaked Bearcat Field. CMU got on the board 21:30 into the first half, when Ricky Griffin contolled a ball in the middle of the box and sent it into the net from 10 feet out. The Bearcats then regrouped, playing strong defense the rest of the half, but the SVC offense struggled, managing just four shots on goal over the first 45 minutes. SVC came out strong following the intermission, but the speedy CMU defense continued to limit the Bearcat scoring opportunities. SVC goalie Brandon Bower kept the Bearcats in the game, making a number of big saves over the final 45 minutes.
The Bearcat offense continued to press, but with just over a minute remaining in regulation, Griffin scored his second tally of the day, off of an assist from Daniel Brackley, to put the game away. CMU outshot the Bearcats 26-14 for the contest, putting 13 shots on goal, with Bower making 11 saves. Tartan goalie Matthew Bazin stopped all four shots he faced for the shutout win.

Using a fast start, the Bearcats picked up a 4-0 win in their home finale over visiting Thiel College. Ben Fecik scored twice, with Sean Molyneaux and Luis Rodriguez adding a goal apiece, while the SVC defense limited the Tomcats to just five shots on goal, all stopped by goalie Brandon Bower The Bearcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Molyneaux took a pass from Rodriguez and blasted it home from 15 yards out, giving SVC the 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute. Ten minutes later, Rodriguez took a cross from Matt Fecik from 10 feet out and buried it in the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season, giving SVC a 2-0 advantage. In the game's 20th minute, Jason Zielinski sent a rocket on goal that was saved, but the rebound bounced directly to the waiting foot of Ben Fecik just five feet out, who directed it over the sprawled keeper for the third Bearcat goal of the day. Ben Fecik scored his second goal of the day, and the final one of the afternoon, with three minutes left in the second half. After Rodriguez displayed some nifty footwork, beating a pair of defenders in the corner, he came up the end line, leaving a touch pass for Fecik, who sent it home to give SVC the 4-0 lead. In the first half, the Bearcats controlled play throughout, finishing with eight shots on goal, 20 shots total, and taking eight corner kicks compared to Thiel's two. Following the intermission, the Bearcats played conservatively, controlling the action around midfield of rain-soaked Bearcat Field. SVC owned a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal over the final period, but were unable to find the net, and the game ended with the Bearcats taking the four-goal win. It was the final home game of the season for the Bearcats, and the team's four seniors - Molyneaux, Zielinski, Mark Mastriano, and Phil Anselmino- were honored in a pre-game ceremony for their contributions to SVC soccer.
