SVC Soccer
9/1 - Seton Hill

The visiting Seton Hill Griffins defeated Saint Vincent by a score of 3-0 in the season opener on the SVC turf field.

Seton Hill, which outshot the Bearcats 36-5 on the afternoon, tested Saint Vincent goalie Jacob Gilbertson early, but the sophomore made a pair of saves at close range over the first 15 minutes.

The Griffins continued on the attack, and finally cracked the scoreboard in the game's 21st minute, on a blast by Mike Pistentis from 30 yards out.

The Bearcats looked to answer right back with a scoring chance of their own, as Luis Rodriguez danced through the SHU defense, but was stopped on a quality save by the Griffins' John DeLuca.

Gilbertson and the Bearcat defense, led by sophomore sweeper Dean Jordan, hung tough throughout the remainder of the first half, as the Griffins managed nine shots over the final 15 minutes of the opening stanza.  Gilbertson managed four saves over the span, while the Bearcat defenders blocked two more and forced three wide.

The visitors came out of halftime and quickly added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute, by Mike Oliver.  Oliver scored his second of the afternoon 10 minutes later, cashing in on the give-and-go, to close the scoring for the afternoon, giving the Griffins a 3-0 advantage.

Despite taking the loss, Gilbertson was strong in goal, finishing with eight saves on the afternoon.  Gabe Cooper, who came on in relief to play the final 28 minutes, finished with four stops.

9/5 - Maryville

The Bearcats were defeated 4-1 by Maryville University in the first game of the 2009 Marietta College Invitational Tournament.

The game was scoreless for the first 30 minutes, until Maryville's Jake Holt found the net with a header directly off of a corner kick.  Just four minutes later, Holt scored an almost identical goal, again off of a corner, to give his team a 2-0 lead that would stand until halftime.

Luis Rodriguez put the Bearcats on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second half, drilling home a direct kick into the upper corner of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

It was as close as SVC could get, however, as Maryville tacked on a pair of insurance goals over the final 15 minutes to earn the win.

9/6 - Marietta Tournament

Behind four-point days by both Ben Fecik and Luis Rodriuguez, the Bearcats defeated Bluffton University 4-2 in the second day of the Marietta College Invitational Tournament.

In a high-scoring first half, Fecik put the Bearcats on the board first, scoring via header off of a cross from Rodriguez.   Rodriguez added to SVC's lead shortly thereafter, knocking home a quick pass from Anthony Balistreri from 18 yards out to give the Bearcats the 2-0 lead midway through the opening stanza.

Bluffton then answered, scoring a pair of goals, including one via penalty kick, in the closing moments of the half to send the game into the intermission tied at 2-2.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Fecik found a seam in the Bluffton defense and went to the goal untouched on a breakaway to score his second marker of the afternoon and give the Bearcats the lead for good.

SVC later added an insurance goal from Balistreri - the first of his career - assisted by Rodriguez to close out the day's scoring and give the Bearcats their first win of the season.

Gabe Cooper earned the win in goal, shutting out Bluffton over the second half, making three saves.  For the game, the Bearcats owned a 20-10 advantage in shots, and took eight corner kicks, compared to five from Bluffton.

Following the game, Rodriguez and sophomore defender Dean Jordan were each named to the all-tournament team.

9/8 - Juniata

The Bearcats suffered a heartbreaking defeat at Juniata College, falling 2-1 in double overtime.

SVC managed to take an early lead, with Ben Fecik scoring late in the first half - his third goal in the last two games - to put the Bearcats up 1-0.  Freshman Gage Arnold recorded his first collegiate point, assisting on the goal.

The Bearcats looked poised to leave Juniata with their first shutout win of the season, but the Golden Eagles managed to tie it up with just 24 seconds remaining in the second half, taking advantage of a failed SVC clearing attempt, to send the game into overtime.

The first extra session was scoreless, as were the first five minutes of the second overtime, until the Golden Eagles managed to score off a deflection from five yards out for the dramatic, come-from-behind win.

For the game, the Bearcats out-shot the Eagles 15-13, and owned a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.  SVC goalie Gabe Cooper finished the day with five saves.

9/12- Franciscan

The Bearcats shut out Franciscan University 1-0 in the opening game of the Bethany College Kickoff Tournament.

Saint Vincent got off to a slow start, as the Bearcats were out-shot 5-3 over the first 45 minutes, but sophomore goalie Jacob Gilbertson was up to the task, making a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.

The Bearcats increased their offensive pressure in the opening stages of the second half, with senior Ben Fecik scoring the eventual game winner in the 61st minute, picking off a pass at midfield and dribbling through a pair of defenders to cash in on the breakaway with the unassisted tally.  For Fecik, it was his fourth goal in the past three games.

Gilbertson and the Bearcat defense made the one-goal lead stand up down the stretch, as he made five saves over the final 40 minutes to earn the shut out win. SVC ended up with a 12-11 advantage in total shots, including a 9-6 margin in the second half.

9/13- Pitt-Greensburg

he Bearcats wrapped up the Bethany College Kickoff Tournament with a rousing 5-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg.

SVC controlled play from the outset, taking an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 12th minute from Luis Rodriguez.   Ben Fecik took a lead pass from Gage Arnold and dribbled into the corner.  Fecik then sent a cross into the box, right onto the waiting foot of Rodriguez, who hammered home the one-timer.

The Bearcats continued to press on offense, out-shooting the Bobcats 9-1 over the first half and taking nine corner kicks, but they weren't able to find the scoreboard again until the waning seconds of the opening stanza on a dynamic goal from Rodriguez.

Jim Vargo controlled the ball deep in UPG territory, sending a cross toward the box.  Rodriguez out-leaped everbody, heading the pass behind the UPG keeper and giving SVC the 2-0 advantage with 13 seconds left in the half.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Fecik gave the Bearcats some more breathing room, controlling a loose ball in the box and knocking it home for SVC's third goal of the day, and Fecik's fifth tally in the past four games.

A pair of freshmen then got in on the scoring act, with Anthony Balistreri and Gage Arnold scoring in the 74th and 80th minutes, respectively.  Balisteri's goal was assisted by classmates Jeremy Flynn and Alex Canton, while Flynn and Matt Fecik were credited with helpers on the Arnold tally.

Another freshman, Clemente Mejia, earned the shutout win in his first collegiate start, turning away five shots.

For the game, the Bearcats owned a 26-8 advantage in shots, and took 13 corners compared to just one from the Bobcats.

9/16 - Allegheny

he Bearcats were defeated 4-1 by visiting Allegheny College on the Saint Vincent Turf.

For the game, SVC was out-shot 26-10, including a 16-2 margin in the first half, during which the visiting Gators scored three goals, two by Tom Ludwig and one by DJ Egan.

Allegheny increased the lead to 4-0, with Ludwig's third goal of the afternoon 14 minutes into the second half.

Saint Vincent's offense then began to show signs of life, receiving a number of scoring chances over the final 30 minutes of play, out-shooting Allegheny 7-5 over the span.  The Bearcats were only able to tally one goal, however, on a rebound put-back by Anthony Balistreri with 13 minutes left to play.

Gabe Cooper and Jacob Gilbertson shared the duty in goal for SVC, each playing 45 minutes, with Cooper finishing with four saves and Gilbertson two.  Andrew Shirley played all 90 minutes in net for the Gators, earning the win with three saves.

9/18 - Kenyon

The Bearcats put together a strong effort, but were defeated 1-0 in overtime by 20th-ranked Kenyon College in Gambier, OH.

After a 90-minute defensive struggle, Kenyon's Jeremiah Jemison notched the game-winner three minutes into the first overtime period, as the Lords were able to foil the SVC upset bid.

The defensive theme was prevalent throughout the first half, as the two squads combined for just seven shot attempts, with neither team registering a shot on goal.

Both teams then picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, with SVC goalie Jacob Gilbertson making five saves over the final 45 minutes.  The Bearcats also managed four shots on goal in the second stanza, two apiece from Ben Fecik and Luis Rodriguez, but Kenyon keeper Jared Kunze was also up to the task, stopping all four to preserve the clean sheet and send the game into an extra session.

In the opening minute of the overtime session, SVC's Alex Lardin looked to net the game-winner, but was denied at close range by Kunze.  The Lords then mounted an attack, with Gilbertson making a pair of point-blank stops in a three-second span, before Jemison scored off the rebound on the third attempt to end the game.

Gilbertson took the hard-luck loss in goal, despite finishing with eight saves.

9/21 - Frostburg State

Two overtimes weren't enough to decide a winner, as the Bearcats battled visiting Frostburg State to a 1-1 tie on a rain-slicked field.

In the first half, Frostburg looked poised a number of times to score the game's first goal, as the Bobcats posted a 6-2 advantage in shots and a 2-0 margin in corner kicks, but Saint Vincent goalie Jacob Gilbertson kept the game scoreless with four saves over the first 45 minutes.

The Bearcats then went on the attack to begin the second half, out-shooting Frostburg 9-1 over the first 20 minutes of the second frame, but were unable to solve Bobcat goalie Jack Abiye.

Following an offsides whistle on the Bearcats in the game's 80th minute, Frostburg mounted an offensive attack.  A long-range blast by the Bobcats' Dillon Muise was blocked by the Bearcat defense, but the long rebound round its way to the foot of Steven Jacobson, who buried it past Gilbertson from less than 10 feet out to give Frostburg the 1-0 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Saint Vincent then quickly regrouped, pressing on their next possession to gain a corner kick.  It found its way to the head of Bearcat Ben Skvarca, but was blocked.  The Bobcats were then whistled for a quick foul, resulting in an indirect kick for Saint Vincent.

Anthony Balistreri took the kick, lofting it deep into the goal box.  Ben Fecik was able to leap and get his head on it, directing it into the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:49 remaining in regulation.

The Bearcats continued on the attack following the goal, with Luis Rodriguez and Drake Pastor both getting quality shots over the final two minutes, but they were each saved by Abiye, sending the game into overtime.

There were a number of scoring chances throughout the first extra session for each team, but both goalies remained strong, as Abiye and Gilbertson each making two saves apiece, including a diving stop by Gilbertson with just eight seconds left that sent the game into a second overtime.

The majority of the second overtime session was played in the middle third of the field, until the final minute, when Rodriguez looked to have a quality scoring chance from less than 20 feet out, only to send the shot just high.  With 20 seconds left, Frostburg mounted a final attack, penetrating deep into SVC territory, and the Bobcats' Danny Hutchins got off what looked to be a quality shot, but it rolled just wide of the net as time expired, and the game ended in the 1-1 tie.

Gilbertson finished the day with eight saves for the Beracats (3-5-1), while Abiye made seven stops for the Bobcats (4-3-1).  Saint Vincent ended with a 19-15 advantage in shots.

9/23 - Carnegie Mellon

The visiting Carnegie Mellon University Tartans, ranked 12th in the nation, overpowered the Bearcats for a 6-0 win on the Saint Vincent turf.

CMU was led by senior forward Ricky Griffin, who tallied the Tartans first five goals, with two over the final 20 minutes of the first half and three more in the first six minutes of the second frame.

For the game, the Tartans outshot the Bearcats 35-5, as SVC goalie Clemente Mejia made seven saves and teammate Jacob Gilbertson five in the losing effort.  Carnegie Mellon also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

9/26 - Lycoming

The Bearcats lost by a score of 3-2 in double overtime to a tough Lycoming College squad.

After the teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, Saint Vincent posted a pair of goals in the second half - one by Ben Fecik and one by Anthony Ross, to take a 2-0 lead.  Fecik also assisted on the Ross goal.

However, Lycoming stormed back, with two goals by Jimmy Deasel in the final 11 minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.  Five minutes into the second overtime, before Dan Marcin slipped past the SVC defense and scored the game-winner.

9/30 - Baldwin-Wallace

The visiting Bearcats were defeated 3-0 by a tough Baldwin-Wallace squad in a rainy contest in Cleveland, OH.

The Bearcat defense, led by goalie Jacob Gilbertson and defenders Dean Jordan and Matt Fecik, played strong, but SVC was unable to muster enough offense, as the team was out-shot 24-5.

B-W opened the scoring in the game's 33rd minute, scoring off of a cross into the middle of the box.  The score remained 1-0 until five minutes into the second half, when the hosts converted a one-time in front, again off of a cross, to go ahead by two goals.

Baldwin-Wallace added a final insurance marker with 30 minutes remaining, on a blast from 18-yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal.

While he lauded the play of his defense, Harmon also thought that his senior forward tandem of Luis Rodriguez and Ben Fecik played well, despite not seeing many prime scoring chances.

10/3 - Bethany

Behind a seven-point day from senior Luis Rodriguez, the Bearcats snapped their four-game losing streak in a big way, defeating Bethany College 5-1.

Rodriguez scored three goals, for his third career hat trick, while also adding an assist.  He was one of three Bearcats with multi-point days, as Ben Fecik scored a goal and added three assists, while Anthony Balistreri tallied a goal and an assist.

Balistreri got the Bearcats on the board early in the first half, before Rodriguez's first goal of the afternoon sent the game into halftime with SVC up 2-0.

The host Bison scored in the opening stages of the second half, to cut the score in half, before the Bearcats put the game away, with Rodriguez scoring twice and Fecik once over the final 30 minutes.

10/6 - Waynesburg

The Saint Vincent offense produced 28 shots, as the Bearcats picked up a 7-0 road win over Waynesburg Univesity.

Luis Rodriguez scored three goals for his second hat trick in as many games, while Ben Fecik added a goal and a career-high four assists.

The Bearcats wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as Fecik gave SVC a 1-0 lead with a goal in the game's third minute.

With just under 30 minutes left in the opening half, Anthony Balistreri gave SVC a 2-0 lead, scoring on a breakaway off of Fecik's first goal of the afternoon. The Bearcats maintained the 2-0 lead through halftime.

As was the case in the first half, SVC came out of the intermission on fire, with Rodriguez scoring twice in the first four minutes of the second half.

In the 60th minute, Gage Arnold scored his second goal of the season, blasting a one-timer into the net off of a deflection, putting the visitors ahead 5-0.

With just over six minutes left, Rodriguez completed the hat trick,  with the assist again credited to Fecik, before Nick Pollino netted his first career goal in the game's 88th minute to finish the scoring.

Jake Gilbertson started in goal for SVC, and played 70 minutes, making  six saves, before giving way to Clemente Mejia, who played the final 20 minutes of the game, making one save.

For the game, the Bearcats out-shot Waynesburg 28-17.

10/9 - Thiel

The Bearcats defeated their third consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference foe, downing visiting Thiel College by a score of 4-1.

Four different players accounted for SVC's four goals, as the Bearcats out-shot the visiting Tomcats 27-5 for the game.

The Bearcats got on the board early, with Anthony Balistreri extending his scoring streak to three straight games after blasting home a long rebound in the game's 14th minute.

Saint Vincent continued to mount attack after attack on offense, posting 12 shots over the first 45 minutes, but they were unable to add an insurance goal until six minutes were left until halftime.  Another long rebound found its way to the foot of Luis Rodriguez from 15 feet out, and the senior sent it into the net for his seventh goal in the past three games, and 11th on the season, making the score 2-0.

Thirteen minutes after halftime, the Bearcats added onto their lead, when a Ben Fecik corner kick was headed into the net by Nick Pollino, giving the Bearcats the 3-0 advantage.

Thiel was able to break the shutout with just under 24 minutes remaining, on a penalty kick by Chad Swisher, but SVC returned the favor, as Fecik converted on another penalty kick with two minutes remaining, closing out the scoring and sealing the 4-1 win for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats owned play throughout, as the strong offensive performance was complimented by a solid defensive showing, as the back line of Drake Pastor, Matt Fecik, and Dean Jordan continually thwarted any Thiel attacks, while also setting up a number of SVC counter attacks.

Jake Gilbertson played all 90 minutes in goal for SVC, posting a pair of saves for the victory, with the only blemish the Swisher penalty kick.

10/12 - Westminster

Saint Vincent's Ben Fecik scored in overtime to give the Bearcats a 2-1 win at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster College.  The win was the Bearcats' first in four overtime affairs this season, while it kept the team unbeaten against PAC rivals.

The Bearcats' Luis Rodriguez opened the game's scoring with an unassisted tally in the game's 27th minute, for his PAC-leading 12th goal of the season.  Westminster evened the score 12 minutes before halftime, on a header goal by Jake Huey.

The game was a defensive struggle over the second 45 minutes, as neither team was able to score a go-ahead tally.  Bearcat goalie Jacob Gilbertson made four second-half saves, and Titan keeper Lance Leathers three, and the game headed into overtime.

Two minutes into the extra session, Fecik took a through ball from Rodriguez and sent it past Leathers, to give the visiting Bearcats the dramatic victory.

For the game, the Bearcats had a slim 18-17 advantage in shots, and Harmon was quick to give praise to his team's defense.

Gilbertson ended the day with eight saves to earn the victory.

10/16 - Washington & Jefferson

The Bearcats kept their unbeaten streak alive with a scoreless, double-overtime tie against Washington & Jefferson on a chilly, soggy Bearcat Field.

Both teams had a number of scoring chances throughout the game, as W&J tallied 27 shots to the Bearcats 21, but all four keepers were able to preserve the clean sheet for the entire 110 minutes.

"I thought it was a well-played game between two even teams," said Saint Vincent head coach Keith Harmon.  "We both had our chances, but just couldn't convert."

In the first half, SVC starting goalie Jacob Gilbertson made four saves, before Clemente Mejia came on to play the second half and the two overtimes, stopping a pair of shots over the 65-minute span.  W&J also played a pair of goalies, with Simen Myrum coming off the bench to make six saves over the final 65 minutes.

While the Presidents owned the edge in total shots, the rest of the statistics were quite even, as each team had six corner kicks, while the Bearcats had nine shots on goal and the Presidents six.

It was the sixth overtime affair for the Bearcats on the season, and second in as many games, as SVC defeated Westminster 2-1 in overtime on Monday.  It was also the fourth SVC game this season to go into double-overtime, tying the modern-day single-season record set in 2006.

The draw snaps the team's four-game winning streak, but the Bearcats are now 4-0-1 against Presidents' Athletic Conference foes.

10/21- Grove City

Senior Luis Rodriguez scored a goal to become just the fourth player in team history to record 100 career points, but it wasn't enough, as the Bearcats saw their five-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-2 loss at Grove City.

The host Wolverines tallied the first five shots of the game, but the Bearcats got on the board first, with Jim Vargo notching his first goal of the season with just over 15 minutes left until halftime.

The Wolverines answered back quickly, with Austin Bernal scoring on a one-timer just three minutes later.  The score remained knotted at one through halftime.

Grove City came out of the intermiession strong, taking a 2-1 lead just two minutes into the second half when Alex Ayer put in a loose ball from the doorstep.  The Wolverines continued to press, but SVC goalie Clemente Mejia was strong throughout the middle stages of the second half, making a number of point-blank saves to keep SVC's deficit at one goal.

With 23 minutes left in regulation,  Rodriguez was pulled down  from behind in front of the cage, and entered the history books when he buried the penalty kick goal to tie the game at 3-3.  The goal, his 14th of the season, gave him his 100th and 101st career points.

Again, Grove City countered, going up 3-2 with an unassisted Andrew Quinn goal in the 70th minute, knocking in a rebound into the corner of the net.

SVC tried to press over the final stages of the game, putting on four shots over the final five minutes, but the Bearcats were unable to rie it up a second time, and were sent home to Latrobe with the defeat.

The Wolverines owned a 27-14 advantage in shots, and took 13 corner kicks compared to SVC's three.  Mejia was solid in goal despite the defeat, posting a career-high 11 saves.

10/24 - Geneva

Visiting Geneva College scored three unanswered goals to hand the Bearcats a 3-2 Senior Day defeat on the SVC turf.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 20 minutes into the first half, before watching Geneva score three unanswered goals, including the game-winner with just five minutes left in regulation.

Luis Rodriguez scored the first tally of the game, sending home a long header from Gage Arnold to put the hosts up 1-0 in the game's 10th minute.

Nine minutes later, SVC's Ben Fecik sent a rocket in from 15 yards out.  It banged off the crossbar, but rebounded right to the foot of Rodriguez who directed it into the net for his 15th goal of the season and 105th point of his career.

It also gave Rodriguez his fourth multi-goal game of the season, while Fecik's assist was his 11th of the year, good for the top spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Geneva wasted little time in beginning the comeback, with Bruce Fox scoring off of a cross from Zachary Buffalini to cut the SVC lead to 2-1 with 16 minutes left in the half.

The Golden Tornadoes continued with the momentum, tying the game three minutes later on a goal by Jake McCracken.

The game then turned into a defensive battle throughout the second half, with SVC goalie Clemente Mejia and Geneva keeper David Callahan combining for 10 saves over the first 40 minutes of the second stanza.

With five minutes left, Geneva took advantage of a Bearcat foul deep inside Golden Tornado territory, and Josh Mann scored on a header after the free kick to give the visitors the 3-2 lead with 5:47 left in regulation.

The Bearcats were unable to put together a final rally, suffering the one-goal loss, their second straight and fifth of the season.

For the game, Geneva owned a 19-15 advantage in shots, while the Bearcats were granted the lone corner kick of the afternoon.  Mejia finished the day with eight saves in the losing effort.

Prior to the game, the Bearcats' senior class of Rodriguez, Ben Fecik, Matt Fecik, Jimmy Vargo, and John Woodruff were recoginzed for their four-year careers in the green and gold.

10/28 - Thomas More

Nationally ranked Thomas More College defeated Saint Vincent by a score of 2-0 in a hard-fought battle on the SVC turf.

The teams played evenly throughout the first half, reaching the end of 45 minutes in a scoreless tie.  Thomas More recorded eight first half shots while the Bearcats countered with five.

The teams continued to trade shots in the second half, with neither team able to find the back of the net.  However, in the 75th minute, a Bearcat defender attempted to clear a corner kick by Thomas More's Dan Miller, and the ball was inadvertently knocked into the Saint Vincent net, for an own goal.

Five minutes later, Saint Vincent was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick.  Miller planted the ball in the lower left corner to give the Saints an insurance goal, and the game ended with a 2-0 score.

With the win, Thomas More improves to 15-2 on the season, while Saint Vincent ends the year with a record of 7-11-2.
