The Bearcats opened up the '85 season with a 3-2 victory over Geneva, with goals scored by Rick Boysen (2) and Larry Williams. They continued their winning ways, defeating Robert Morris 2-1 in overtime and routing Alliance 8-1.
On September 27, the NAIA rated the 6-0 Bearcats second in Area 10 (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and New York), and the Bearcats proved this ranking was worthy, defateing Wheeling College 2-1 and Saint Francis 3-0. After a 2-1 win over Slippery Rock, the 10-0 Bearcats were ranked number 18 in the nation in NAIA.
The Bearcats moved up to number 16 after beating California (PA), improving their record to 12-0. They suffered their first loss of the season on October 23, losing to West Virginia Wesleyan, ranked fourth in the nation, 2-0.
After defeating Penn State Behrend to finish out the regular season with a 13-1 record, the Bearcats defeated Geneva for the District 18 Championship and beat Cabrini College in the NAIA Area 10 semifinals to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.
reaching the NAIA National Tournament, the Bearcats pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history, defeating the Number 1 seeded Alabama-Huntsville squad 2-1 in overtime. Rick Boysen scored on a header off a corner kick in the game's 108th minute.SVC's cinderella sesaon came to an end in the second round of the National Tournament, as they lost to a powerful Fresno-Pacific team by the score of 1-0.
After one of the most successful season's of any team in the history of the college, three members of the Bearcats were awarded post season honors. Coach Bob Scott was selected as the National Coach of the Year by National Soccer Coaches of America. Rick Boysen and Dean Zanella were named to the NAIA All-America Team. Boysen led the 20-3 Bearcas with 13 goals and 10 assists. For Zanella, it was the second consecutive season in which he was named an All-American. He recorded six goals and added six assists.
