10/27:
Bearcats finish season with loss
The Saint Vincent Bearcats concluded the 2004 soccer season with a 4-0 loss
on the road against Tiffin University (Ohio).
The loss evens SVC's record at 9-9 for the year.
Seniors Brent White and Rick Seigh concluded their collegiate careers, but
each will remain part of the record book. White's six shutouts equalled
the mark that he previously shared with Ed Sagan (1986). White recorded
six shutouts in 2002 as well.
Seigh's five-goal game against Shawnee State University in mid-September
equalled the record set by Tayfun Testepe in 1981.
Another senior, team captain Mike Schreck, may be able to return to the
team. Schreck redshirted two seasons ago due to injury and has one season
of eligibility remaining.
10/23:
Bearcats lose in double OT
The Saint Vincent men's soccer team lost to Carnegie Mellon University in
double overtime, 4-3. Dave Suski scored all three goals for SVC.
Mike Schreck had two assists, while Jarrod Weaver, Matt Hanley and Shea Simpson
each had one assist.
The winning goal came with 8:26 remaining in the second overtime. Brent
White and Gregg Walsh split time in goal, with Walsh suffering the
loss.
10/21:
Bearcats defeat UPJ
Sophomore Gregg Walsh earned his first victory in the net as the Saint
Vincent Bearcats defeated the University of Pitt-Johnstown on the road Thursday
by a 7-2 score in a non-conference game.
Forwards Dave Suski and Rick Seigh led the way, each scoring two goals and
adding two assists. Matt Hanley registered a goal and an assist, while
Mike Schreck and Nick Kozak each added a goal. Assists were credited to
Jason Zielinski, Shea Simpson, Bradd Picone, Jarrod Weaver and Adam Karlovich.
Walsh, a graduate of Seton LaSalle HS, recorded six saves in his first
varsity starting appearance.
10/16:
Bearcats fall in double OT
The Saint Vincent Bearcats lost a heartbreaker in New York to Roberts
Wesleyan College, by a 2-1 margin in double overtime.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of the first half. RWC
scored early in the second half, but Phil Anselmino found Dave Suski with a pass
and Suski tied the game just over a minute later.
The score remained tied until two minutes into the second overtime, when
Roberts Wesleyan, ranked #16 in the nation, scored the
gamewinner.
10/12:
Bearcats fall to Houghton
The Bearcats gave up two goals in the first eight minutes and despite a Dave
Suski goal midway through the first half, could not rebound, falling to Houghton
College on the road, 2-1. Saint Vincent lost despite outshooting Houghton
16-4. Chris Stern assisted Suski on the goal.
The Bearcats fall to 3-3 in the American Mideast Conference North Division,
8-6 overall.
10/9:
Conference loss for SVC
The Bearcat men fell behind Seton Hill University early, after a foul was
called inside the box just five minutes into the game. The resulting goal
on a penalty kick was all that the Griffins would need. Seton Hill added a
goal on a corner kick midway through the second half for a 2-0 victory in a game
played at Yough High School.
10/5: Bearcats
down Daemen, 4-0
Despite missing three key starters, the Saint Vincent men defeated Daemen
College by a 4-0 score to improve their conference record to 3-1.
Chris Stern opened the scoring with a shot from well outside the
goalkeeper's box just four minutes into the game. The score at the half
remained 1-0, but that was all keeper Brent White would need, as he recorded a
school record-tying sixth shutout of the season.
Defender Shea Simpson added a goal nine minutes into the second half for
insurance. Late in the game, Steve Davidovich and Jim Boland added
goals within a one minute span, giving the Bearcats a 4-0 victory. For
Davidovich and Boland, a pair of sophomores, the goals were the first of their
collegiate careers.
Assists during the day were credited to Dave Suski, Jason Zielinski, Nick
Kozak, Mark Mastriano and Adam Karlovich.
SVC played without three starters - senior forward Ricky Seigh,
junior defender Scott Gross and sophomore defender Bradd Picone.
Freshmen Jason Zielinski, Mark Mastriano and Phil Anselmino stepped up to fill
key roles. "I thought the freshmen played well," said Coach Keith
Harmon. "Especially Mastriano. We asked him to play a position,
right halfback, that he's never played
before."
10/2: Bearcats
fall in AMC contest
The Saint Vincent soccer team was unable to come back from an early deficit,
falling to American Mideast Conference North foe Notre Dame (OH) 3-0 at rain
soaked Bearcat Field.
The Bearcats gave up three goals in the first ten minutes of play, and,
despite a number of scoring chances, were unable to mount a comeback.
"We gave up those goals early," said head coach Keith Harmon, "and just
couldn't come back. I'd say for over 75 percent of the game, we outplayed
them, but that first 25 percent really killed us. You can't get behind like that
in conference play, for the teams are just too
good."
9/29: Suski
scores two in Bearcat win
Dave Suski scored two goals as the Bearcats downed visiting Slippery
Rock University on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 2-0.
Suski's first goal was scored at the 9:35 mark in the first half, as he
drilled a shot over the head of Slippery Rock goaltender Pat Passewitz.
Juniors Shea Simpson and Chris Stern assisted.
His second goal came midway through the second half, as he knocked a loose
ball past Passewitz during a scrum in front of the net. It was
unassisted.
Goaltender Brent White (Mount Pleasant, PA) earned his fifth shutout on the
season, denying six shots. The Bearcats defense, led by
senior Mike Schreck, played well, turning aside a number of scoring
chances by the Rock in the second
half.
9/25: Bearcats
outshoot, outscore Pioneers
The Saint Vincent men were on the road against AMC rival Point Park, and
recorded an 8-0 victory.
Dave Suski, Rick Seigh and Chris Stern each recorded two goals for the
Bearcats (6-3, 2-0 AMC North). Defensemen Jarrod Weaver and Shea Simpson
also added goals. For Weaver, it was his first collegiate goal, scored on
a penalty kick after he was pulled down by a Point Park player inside the
box.
Jason Zielinski recorded two assists, Bradd Picone, Mark Mastriano and Suski
one each. Brent White recorded the shutout in goal, but the SVC defense
only allowed Point Park to tally three shots on goal. Saint Vincent
outshot PPU 27-3.
9/21: Panthers shut down Bearcats
The Saint Vincent men never got involved in the game against Ohio Dominican
on the road, dropping a 5-0 decision.
According to Coach Harmon, "The men were just simply outplayed, beaten to
every ball. We're hot and cold right now. You can't play like we did
against Geneva on Saturday then come out and play like this the next game. We
need to be consistent."
9/18: Gross
scores lone goal in SVC win
A header into the net by Scott Gross with less than 26 minutes remaining in
the game proved to be all that the Bearcats would need to defeat Geneva in the
American Mideast Conference opener for SVC in Latrobe. The final score was
1-0.
Chris Stern and Rick Seigh assisted on the goal.
Brent White played behind a solid Bearcat defense to earn the shutout, his
third of the season.
9/15: Malone
defeats SVC, 2-1
The SVC men got off to a fast start, as Matt Hanley scored near the five
minute mark at the outset of the game. Dave Suski and Jarrod Weaver
assisted.
However, Malone came back with two unanswered goals to earn a 2-1
victory. Keeper Brent White played a strong game for the Bearcats
(4-2) but took the loss.
9/12: Seigh
equals record with 5 goals
Rick Seigh equalled a 23-year-old Saint Vincent soccer record by scoring five
goals in the Bearcats' 9-0 victory over Shawnee State University on the road in
Ohio Sunday.
Seigh, a senior from Monroeville/Gateway HS, equalled the mark set
in 1981 by Tayfun Testepe.
Seigh totalled 11 points on the day, adding an assist. Other SVC
scorers were Dave Suski (1 goal, 1 assist), Chris Stern (1-1), Mark
Mastriano (1 goal), Adam Karlovich (1 goal), Shea Simpson (3 assists), Jason
Zielinski (2 assists) Mike Schreck (1 assist) and Nick Kozak (1
assist).
Brent White started and earned the victory in the net. Bryan Poole
preserved the shutout by stopping a penalty kick in the second
half.
9/11: Urbana
upsets SVC, 5-0
The Saint Vincent men got off to a poor start, giving up two goals in the
first six minutes of the game. They never recovered, dropping the game to
Urbana by a 5-0 score. Brent White and Bryan Poole shared duties in
goal. The loss was the first of the season for the Bearcats, who are now
3-1.
9/8: SVC downs
SIU in the rain
The Saint Vincent men remain undefeated following a 2-1 victory
over Salem International University in a game played in heavy rainfall, due to
the remnants of Hurricane Frances.
SVC opened the scoring with a Chris Stern penalty kick. The Bearcats
were awarded the shot after junior Dave Suski was pulled down inside the box.
With the game tied at 1, freshman Phil Anselmino sent a cross pass into the box,
where several players from both teams attempted to reach the ball. It was
hit into the net by a Salem player, giving SVC the winning
goal.
9/3: White,
Bearcats post shutout over Walsh
In the inaugural game on the new Bearcat Field the teams headed to the
halftime break in a scoreless tie. However, the Bearcat offense took
control in the second half. Dave Suski's first goal of the season came
thanks to help from Matt Hanley and Shea Simpson. Suski then added an
unassisted goal off a direct kick to double the Bearcat lead. It was more
than enough for senior GK Brent White, who played a solid game in the net for
the shutout.
Late in the second half, a Walsh defender inadvertently kicked the ball
into his own net, giving Saint Vincent a 3-0
victory.
9/1: SVC opens
season with victory
Coach Harmon's SVC men started the year with a win, posting a 3-2
victory over Davis & Elkins on the road in West Virginia.
Matt Hanley scored the first goal of the game, off an assist from Dave
Suski. Shea Simpson came from his usual defensive position to score
SVC's second goal with help from Nick Kozak.
With the game tied at two with 6 minutes remaining, Chris Stern sent a
corner kick toward the net, where it was headed in for the game winning goal by
Scott Gross. Brent White earned the win in the net for
SVC.
