2008 Match Recaps

2/17 - Westminster

The Bearcats opened up the 2008 campaign with a 6-3 win over Westminster College at the Greensburg Raquet Club.

Singles winners for the Bearcats included John Allen (6-2, 6-4), Stefan Genzor (6-4, 6-2), Steve Filipiak (6-4, 6-1), and Chad Meholic (6-1, 6-4).

The doubles tandems of Allen/Zac Parkhill were victorious by an 8-5 count, while the duo of Zack Orthen and Troy Smith won their match by an 8-6 score.

2/19- Waynesburg

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets defeated the SVC Bearcats by a score of 6-3 at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

SVC posted victories in three singles matches - Zac Parkhill (#2), Stefan Genzor (#4) and Paul DiVincenzo (#6).  John Allen had to forfeit his #1 singles match after retiring with a leg injury.

Spring Break Florida Trip

The Bearcats lost to St. Thomas University on the road in Florida to open the spring Southern trip. The final score was 9-0.  SVC's #3 doubles team, Tyler Camaione and Zack Orthen, played well, dropping a close 8-5 game.  

The next day, SVC lost 9-0 to nationally ranked Palm Beach Atlantic, then concluded the trip with a 9-0 loss to NAIA school Northwood University.

3/6 - Pitt-Greensburg

The Bearcat men downed the University of Pitt @ Greensburg by a score of 5-4 at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

UPG won all three doubles matches in close contests, but SVC rebounded with five singles wins, including two of three that went into a tiebreaker.

Singles winnes were Zac Parkhill (#1 position), Troy Smith (#2), Steve Filipiak (#4), Paul DiVincenzo (#5) and Chad Meholic (#6).

3/11 - Bethany

The Bearcats defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany College in a late-night match at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

The final score was 8-1.

Singles winners were Carl Rovnak, Troy Smith, Steve Filipiak and Stefan Genzor.  SVC also won a singles match by forfeit, because Bethany only had five players.

Doubles winners were the teams of Zac Parkhill/Filipiak, and Rovnak/Smith.  The third doubles match was won by forfeit.

3/18 - Notre Dame College

Despite being close in several matches, the Bearcats fell to visiting Notre Dame College (OH) by a score of 7-2.

Paul DiVincenzo was a two-time winner on the day in both singles and doubles.  He eased to victoryi n the #6 singles spot with scores of 6-1 and 6-2, then teamed with Chad Meholic in the #3 doubles position and pulled out a close victory, 8-6.  In that match, Meholic came up with several skillful shots to help the pair earn the win.

In other doubles action, Zac Parkhill and Steve Filipiak faced a dominant team in the #1 position.  Despite a hard fought effort, they fell by a score of 8-2.

Troy Smith and Carl Rovnak nearly pulled off a giant comeback in the #2 doubles match.  After falling behind 7-1 early, the duo gained momentum and battled back, winning five straight games to make it 7-6.  Unfortunately, they were unable to come up with another win and lost 8-6.

Three singles matches also proved to be close losses.  Smith (#3) and Stefan Genzor (#5) both had to go to the third set tie-breaker, while Filipiak (#4) had his match go to a tie-breaker in the second set.

Genzor's match went down to the wire.   He played well in the first set but fell short, 7-5.  In the second, he rebounded with impressive play to win, 6-3.  For the third set, a super tie-breaker to 10 points was played.  Both rivals played well, and Genzor was using his height to his advantage to smash overheads and win crucial points.  The match went the distance, with the NDC player coming out ahead, 11-9.

Smith's match was equally intense.  In the first set, he was very competitive, winning 6-4.  In the second set, Smith fell behind early and could not catch up, losing 6-2.  In the third set super tie-breaker, Smith fell behind early, 3-1.  He won the next two points to tie the intense match, but ended up falling 10-4.

Filipiak lost his first set 6-1, but battled back to take the send the second set to a tie-breaker, which also went to the wire before Filipiak lost by a tally of 8-6.

3/27 - W&J

The Bearcats lost a close contest to Washington & Jefferson College by a score of 5-4.

SVC's Paul DiVincenzo was a two-time winner on the day, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win in singles, and then teaming with Chad Meholic to win in double play by an 8-3 score.

Steve Filipiak was a 6-0, 7-6 winner in singles for the Bearcats, while teammate Stefan Genzor winning his singles match by a 6-4, 6-2 count. 

3/31 - PSU-Altoona

Penn State-Altoona defeated the Bearcat men by a score of 7-2 at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

Saint Vincent picked up a victory at the #1 doubles position, with the team of Zac Parkhill and Steve Filipiak winning by a score of 8-4. 

Filipiak was a two-time winner on the day, capturing his #4 singles match 6-3 and 7-6.

Two other Bearcats took their singles matches to three sets.  Stefan Genzor (#5) lost the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6, then won the second set 6-3 before falling 6-3 in the third set.  Troy Smith (#3) lost 6-4 in the first set, then rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second before dropping the third set 6-4.

4/3 - Grove City

The Bearcats lost to a tough Grove City College squad on the road by a 9-0 score.

SVC is now 3-8 on the season.

4/10 - Wilmington

Wilmington College defeated SVC by a score of 9-0 on the road.

Paul DiVincenzo (#5) and Chad Meholic (#6) each took their singles matches to a third set, both falling by a 10-6 score in the third set tiebreaker.

4/11 - Thomas More

The Bearcats defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More by a 6-3 score in Crestview Hills, KY.

Saint Vincent swept all three doubles matches on the afternoon.  The duo of Steve Filipiak and Zac Parkhill won by an 8-6 count, Troy Smith and Carl Rovnak won 8-2, and Chad Meholic and Paul Divincenzo won 8-5.

In singles play, Filipiak won by a count of 8-0, Divincenzo won 8-2, and Tyler Camaione picked up an 8-2 win.
