Kennametal Chairman Carlos M. Cardoso told 128 Saint Vincent College December graduates and their families and friends on Saturday to keep three guiding principles in mind as they proceed through life.

“Never forget where you came from,” Mr. Cardoso advised. “Remember always to be humble and understand the importance of family values.”

“Second, take the opportunity to learn from everyone you come across and every situation that you encounter,” he continued. “And, make a difference in everything you do and everyone you meet.”

“Never underestimate the power of education,” Mr. Cardoso advised. “Be open and willing to learn from people and experiences you encounter every day. You will meet countless people throughout your lifetime and they will all have a story to tell and experiences to share. Learn from them.”

“The most valuable learning takes place outside your comfort zone,” Mr. Cardoso concluded. “The importance of this type of learning became evident to me in my childhood since I had to adapt to different cultures and environments and be able to learn new things at a rapid pace. Just as learning from others is important, it is also important to learn from yourself and your own mistakes. Look at mistakes as a blessing in disguise and rebound from failures with resilience.”

“As you go through life, make sure you take the time to look over your shoulder,” he said. “You are only as strong as the team you have behind you.”

“As you graduate today, think about how you will make a difference in this world,” he concluded.
