James D. Garraux, senior vice president-corporate affairs and general counsel for U.S. Steel Corporation, will be the main speaker at the spring luncheon lecture sponsored by the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government to benefit the Dr. Gabriel S. Pellathy Law Education Fund. The event begins at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 22 at The Duquesne Club, 325 Sixth Ave., Pittsburgh.

Mr. Garraux graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He earned his law degree in 1978 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he was elected to the Law Review.

He began his career at U. S. Steel in 1979 in the labor arbitration section of the corporate labor relations department. He moved through a series of increasingly responsible assignments before he was named director-labor arbitration in 1990. He became general manager-labor relations the following year and was appointed general manager-employee relations in 1996.

Mr. Garraux was promoted to the position of vice president-employee relations in 2000, and in 2003, he was named vice president-labor relations. In these capacities, he served as the company’s chief labor negotiator. He was appointed general counsel in February 2007 and added environmental affairs and corporate security to his areas of responsibility. In December 2009, Mr. Garraux assumed responsibility for public policy and governmental affairs activities.

Mr. Garraux is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Association of General Counsel. Additionally, Mr. Garraux is the chairman of the board of directors of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross and serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Manufacturers. He is also a member of the executive committee of the Three Rivers Area Labor-Management Committee.

The Pellathy Law Education Fund, initiated in April 2006, is designed to assist students planning to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), book purchases on topics of legal careers, pre-law preparation and test review. The Fund also sponsors talks by judges and law professors for aspiring law students and hosts visits by admission officers from law schools.

The Fund is named in honor of Dr. Gabriel S. Pellathy, professor of political science in the McKenna School since 1978. In the fall of 2003, he was a Fulbright teaching scholar in Hungary, lecturing on American Environmental Law and Policy at the Pazmany University Faculty of Law in Budapest, Hungary. He is a Fellow in Government and Legal Affairs in the Center for Political and Economic Thought. His current teaching areas include American politics, public administration and environmental law and policy. He served as the moderator of the Pre-Law Club for many years.
