Saint Vincent College Adds Fun Signs that Rhyme, Educate

Public Relations

Visitors to Saint Vincent College this weekend, including the hundreds of alumni and parents attending the annual Alumni Homecoming and Fall Family Weekend, have another reason to smile as they approach the campus since they will be entertained with poetic signs reminiscent of the signs used by Burma-Shave on country roads in the 1920s.

“These signs are a way to extend our hospitality to visitors to make them feel more welcome,” explained Don Orlando, director of public relations. “The first series of signs that were displayed during the Steelers summer training camp were very popular with visitors. These new poems were a collaborative effort designed to educate and entertain alumni and parents.”

The use of simple roadside signs was first introduced by the Burma-Shave Co. in 1925. Demand was sparse and the company sought to expand sales by installing advertising signs that were different from what others were doing. Sales took off and the signs were credited with making Burma-Shave the second-highest selling brushless shave cream in the United States. An example of the popular signs that were seen across the country for nearly four decades is this one:

A PEACH LOOKS GOOD
WITH LOTS OF FUZZ
BUT MAN’S NO PEACH
AND NEVER WUZ.
BURMA-SHAVE.

Saint Vincent College has six new series of signs along the main entrance drive as visitors arrive and depart. The signs are similar to the Burma-Shave signs which utilized white printing on a red background. But the College’s signs are made out of corrugated plastic rather than wood and are rendered in the college’s athletic colors of green and gold.

If you visit the campus, here is what you will see:

WHEN ALUMNI RETURN
THEY ALWAYS EXCLAIM
HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED
BUT ARE SOMEHOW THE SAME!
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

WELCOME BACK, DEAR ALUMNI!
WE’VE CHANGED AND WE’VE GROWN
BUT SOME THINGS DON’T CHANGE
WHEN YOU’RE HERE, YOU ARE HOME.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

LET’S RAISE A GLASS
AND TOAST YOUR SUCCESS
THANKS TO AN EDUCATION
THAT WAS CLEARLY THE BEST.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

AS THE SUN SETS OVER LATROBE,
AND ITS LIGHT IS BUT A GLIMMER,
LET US ALL REFLECT
ON OUR FOUNDER, BONIFACE WIMMER.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

YOU’RE LEAVING HERE
AND HEADING HOME
OUR PRAYERS GO WITH YOU
WHEREVER YOU ROAM.
SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT
WE’RE GLAD YOU WERE HERE
MAY YOUR JOURNEYS BE SAFE ONES
UNTIL WE SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

The college welcomes amateur poets to submit rhymes for consideration for future campus signs. They may be sent to pr@stvincent.edu.
