Dr. Julie Rubio, author and college professor, will present the fourth lecture in the First Theology Lecture Series sponsored by the department of theology in the Saint Vincent College School of Humanities and Fine Arts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Performing Arts Center of the Robert S. Carey Student Center. The talk is entitled “A Family for Others.” Admission is free and open to the public.
Dr. Rubio is associate professor of Christian ethics at St. Louis University. Her research brings together Catholic social teaching and Christian theology on marriage and family. She is the author of Family Ethics: Practices for Christians (Georgetown University Press, 2010). Currently, she is working on a new book tentatively titled, Both Personal and Political: Catholic Reflections on American Social Problems. Most of her writing comes out of a commitment to bridge the traditional gap between personal morality and social justice.
She has participated in interdisciplinary gatherings of social scientists and theologians sponsored by the Religion, Culture and Family Project, the Lily Endowment and the Institute for American Values. As a board member of the Society of Christian Ethics, she spearheaded efforts of the Women’s Caucus to encourage the SCE to promote adoption of family-friendly policies in academic institutions. At St. Louis, Dr. Rubio teaches courses in ethics and is the director the master of arts program in theology.
