Zachary Tackett, a senior English major from Lower Burrell, has won the Thelma Hall Prize in Creative Writing at the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship conference for his poetry manuscript titled, Attempt at Definition: A Documentary.
Tackett is one of only 26 members of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, who received prizes at the society’s national convention in Nashville, April 4-6. The cash prizes were funded through discipline-specific endowments established by supporters of the society. More than 260 students presented work at the conference.
Tackett wrote Attempt at Definition as his senior project in English in the fall semester of 2012. A long poem in the documentary mode, it chronicles his service experience in Guatemala and draws from research on documentary poetics as well as the anthropology of violence.
“I hope to create a living document of Guatemala’s past and present and to establish my presence within that context. I hope to transport my readers, even for a second, to the moments that I have documented,” he commented.
